  • The Royal Melbourne Show as it was in the mid 1960s. This never seen before footage was captured by my father-in-law when he upgraded to a brand new Super 8 camera. "The Show" was the go-to destination for just about every Victorian family - particularly city slickers who could experience the country first hand with sheep shearing, wood-chopping, cattle, pig and poultry pavilions - and all celebrated with a public holiday (known as "Show Day"). There were show-bags back then too - some free and the rest cheap - at a time when they really were "promotional". This footage contains some scenes of the "Mad Mouse" - the highlight of "sideshow alley", along with folk dancers and other children's rides. The footage is not automotive, but may be of interest.

Glad it was you and not me.
I used to look up and think those cars are gonna come up the rails and land on the ground.
The rides at Luna Park were my style.
      Lol

@@stevemurrell6167 yeah. I think the rides at Luna Park are a safe bet.
Me and my mate were king of the Spider ride at Luna Park in the 80s. We used to be able to spin the seats or cars whatever you wanna call them and when we got off we had all these other teenagers coming up asking us how do you do that shit?
What about the fuckin Zipper? What a bloody spew machine that was. 🤢

I was Mad enough to go on the Mad mouse at the Royal Show I think about 1966. (Not jerky work on the camera and good quality film still. Not your average amateur photographer.) Good memories of a day with grandpa in the 50's and 60's showbags to gorge myself on and wonderful animals and of course the odd ridiculous ride that MUST be taken.

Many years later I had a second coming at the Show Grounds at the Trots on Saturday night

Were the Trots held at the showgrounds from time to time in the 70s?
I remember the channel 7 show with Mary Hardy and what's his name? And when a race was about to start Bill Collins came on.
Mind you on saturday nights my mum and dad would be hanging out with my best mates mum and dad drinking and smoking while watching that show.
Us kids would be out spotlighting or playing knick knack and run.
      Good times.

I used to look up at the Mad Mouse every year we went.
It scared the hell out of me when I saw those cars approaching the bend, I thought they would come off and land on the ground.
The chair lift was my favourite part of the RMS.

I remember this ride at the show - I felt like it went on 2 wheels around the corners! but it doesn’t look like it here.

Judging by peoples' reminiscences here, it's sounding like the Mad Mouse was almost a MAD MAX kind of inspiration! 😁😆😅🤣 We ARE talking the same country!! All things Strine and all ! ! !
Relatives used to ask me "Why are you shooting film of things we're doing when we're having fun?"
Now, decades later, they're saying THANKS for locking in the memories!
That's what THIS grandpa was doing!!
