Holden EJ Premier - A Little Bit of Luxury, A Lot of Personality

  • I am always amazed at the generosity of time owners of classic cars afford me when I approach them for an interview - and none more so than Dave with his wonderful Holden EJ Premier with "Myles" the caravan in tow. As someone who can only afford to admire, and not actually own these precious parts of our motoring history, I will be forever grateful that there are people like Dave who are so willing to share their time and experience with me, and I hope that in some small way these interviews prove just a little bit entertaining.
Having owned the EJ for over 20 years, Dave took the view that it was there to enjoy, and so has made it a daily driver. There are some minor scuffs as you would expect of a car seeing regular family duty, but all in all it is in suprisingly great shape, and you really need to look hard to find the odd blemish. I think it is testament to the quality of these early Holdens that the duco, upholstery and chromework all look so great after all these years and miles. The quality of workmanship that went into their manufacture is evident in spades, from the thickness of duco, quality of hinges, panel alignment and seating upholstery. The door locks provide a reassuring click as everything lines up perfectly. The seats offer comfort well beyond what they should be expected to after nearly 60 years. There is no "afterthought", nothing "tacked on" for the sake of austerity. It seems a creation of craftsmen rather than accountants - and the minute you get inside you understand why so many enthusiasts keep the Holden marque alive today - they are simple, beautiful and have their own unique persona that no plastic SUV from today could ever compete with.
Our thanks to Dave and family for treasuring this wondereful car (and caravan) and allowing me the time to experience just a little of what was my early childhood - having spent plenty of time in the back seat of an EH. Below are the links to some of Dave's social media - why not give them a look and a listen! The EJ even features in some lock-down sessions...

I’ve had heaps of early Holden’s when l was younger l had just about every model FX’s, FJ’s, no FE’s, FC, FB, EK’s, no EJ’s but a few EH’s that included an EH premier that l wish l had of kept but that went 41 years ago! Plus many, many more later Holden’s & Fords and other makes but when l started watching this video l thought to myself that fella has got to be kidding pulling a caravan with the old 138 ci side plater with the old hydromatic! Mate! Unfortunately l was an owner of the first Holden that came out with an auto the one before the EJ the EK back in 1971 only because it was cheap and the guy l bought it off just could not sell it as no one wanted the bloody thing with that driveline but l had intended on putting in a hot 179 and a manual which l eventually did about 6 months later after buying it so l drove it around for the first 6 months and all l can say is l probably would have got to work quicker on a bus or tram as l could probably describe its performance nicely by saying “ it wouldn’t pull a sailor off your sister” man l tell you l lived on a fairly steep hill and it struggled to get up my driveway! I reckon a side valve Morris minor would best it at the traffic lights! So the EJ premier with the red donk unit was the right thing to do bugger the purists l mean it’s also a safety issue with commensurate brake improvements should be made too, good on him for keeping everything else original bits and pieces and yes l think the EJ premier was probably the most aesthetic in the early premiers slso

They got 120 hp easily out of the 138 with mods in the day.

Idk why the EJ is disliked more then the EH but I think the EJ has a Better design. Glad the EH Ute and panelvan kept the rear end design.

Well they touched on it in the video - the EH had the all new red motor, EJ still had the ancient grey that is the only reason why the EJ has always been more maligned really over the years

Australian Holden bosses couldnt design a modern car in a pink fit...they came to grief over the EJ witch was revised to become the EH...Then they stuffed up again with the HD...so much so that GM bosses made sure they fixed it with the new HR being revised at GM HQ...And it all started with the outdated design of the FB Holden in the early 60s...

Over the 70 years GM built cars in Australia they would upgrade as little as possible to maximise profit. GMs thought they’d get away with the grey motor but Ford and Chrysler had the bigger, more powerful options, hence GM were forced to upgrade the EH with the red motor to compete.
The big three of the late 20th Century were all pretty reliable if maintained to spec, because they were so bloody basic little could go wrong. Once Toyota got passed their first few efforts Toyota engineering was superior in comparison to GM, Ford and Chrysler. Why did people keep buying these dinosaurs…the power of marketing and advertising created tribalism.
