Everything about this opening number was mesmerizing: glorious voices nailing those tight harmonies, the tableau and staging, the ensemble actually ACTING the music...and on and on. Kudos to the pit, who had their work cut out for them (with no doubt a brilliant MD). Gushy, I know, but it impressed this former B'way pianist and conductor greatly. More!

Appreciate the detail of how all the black characters stand on a separate platform from the white ones

I’ve been looking for a production of Parade to show my Broadway/musical History HS class. I would LOVE to own a copy of your production to add to my curriculum. Is there a way to purchase your full production???

@@KT-sq2ml Uh...you DO realize the opening song takes place during the American Civil War right?

@@MrWill9002 Yes. We do. And this song and the play as a whole are meant to critique the South pretty heavily by juxtaposing the seemingly grand, sweeping patriotic song with how hateful the Southerners become towards Leo Frank, a Northern Jew, on such little evidence during the show. This number is important to set up the context for how the Civil War, which happened 50 years before the play's events, shaped Marietta, GA's views on the North, especially since the murder Frank was blamed for takes place during a Confederate Memorial Parade. There's an aura of menace under this whole number showing the writers knew what they were doing. Even lyrics like "when the Southland is free" highlight the hypocrisy, since underneath all the stuff about "honor" and "peace" is the reality that the South was fighting to keep people enslaved.
