  • Original videos uploaded by General Danvers: • Parade in Concert
    I edited all of the parts together into a single video and added subtitles. I also removed the beep/stutter at the transition between videos. Hopefully all this makes the performance more approachable for people who are both familiar with and new to this musical alike. Enjoy! :)
    Performed on February 16, 2015.
    Original Description:
    * Parade in Concert starring Jeremy Jordan and Laura Benanti. Performed at the Avery Fisher Hall, Parade in Concert was a one-night only concert presentation of Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry's Tony-Award winning musical, Parade.
    I do not own this video. *

    One of my favourite things about this musical is how I consistently feel both disturbed and inspired by ‘Red Hills of Home’. It’s similar to the Hitler Youth song ‘Tomorrow Belongs to Me’ from Cabaret. There is an incredible power in a rousing tune. For good and ill.

      I'm watching this for the first time and I'm speechless at this opening. Some of the most beautiful, gorgeous, rousing music I've ever heard, and all of it celebrating slavery and the South. Deeply, deeply conflicting. It's genius, really.

      I'm always in two minds when I watch that number. Because the melody and vocals are so catchy and jazzy that you want to enjoy it. If you really think about it, the only thing that changes this song from sensual to creepy is the element of consent. If he sang this song to someone who is a partner and someone who wants to be with him, then it's kind of sexy. But because we know the objects of his affections are not adults and not consenting, THAT is what makes it sinister.
      Like when horror movies play nursery rhymes and children songs that normally are a source of joy and innocence, but because it's in a horror movie the tune becomes almost frightening.
      Then there's the added contextual layer that while the performance is painting one picture, the situation is polar opposite. The girls sing like victims while Jeremy sings like a villain. When in actuality, the girls are the villains and Jeremy is the victim in this number. Bone-chilling from so many angles.

      I firmly believe it was wayyyyyy ahead of its time. This show debuted *23* years ago, under a popular Democratic president, with great strides being made in tv/film diversity at the time. We hadn't even had 9/11 happen yet. America was still in *massively* deep denial about the ways racism and anti-semitism were still thriving in our country, and absolutely did NOT want to confront that in the ways Parade does so frankly and effectively. We're only just now, in 2021, catching up to even talking about what the show unapologetically depicted. If there was a revival today, now that BLM and police brutality and racist legal systems are finally at the forefront of our conversations, I think it would sweep the Tonys and absolutely catch fire.

      Parade is not a story of racism, so I'm not sure what it has to do with anything... If we're being completely honest here, no one really cares about the Jews (except for occasionally lumping them in with all the other stuff) and that's fine because we can clearly handle ourselves (with the help of God) and don't need people who have no idea what they are talking to "stand up for us." That's the way it's always been, and that's the way it will always be.

    I've just watched this musical for the first time and the ending really broke my heart. I just couldn't believe that they really killed an innocent man, I kept thinking that thered be a moment where he'd be saved, but no. It's so powerful because it shows such an ugly truth.

  • @ARReith
    @ARReith ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I love this pairing and I think they sound beautiful! I struggle with this and the current (Ben Platt) revival because it's cast SO young for the role, particularly, of Leo. I know these men make acting their life profession but at some point, they have to relate their performing/expressive choices to something real in their lives... and I don't see it in either man. Brent Carver was 10-15 years older than Jordan/Platt and I think that is what makes his performance indelible and a gold standard for the role.He knew what he was singing about and, somehow, it was real for him. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but it's one area where they don't tick the boxes - but nearly everywhere else, it is perfection!

      @horrorhistory7342 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean Leo was only 29 when the killing happened. That's pretty young.

    • @SecondValveSteam
      @SecondValveSteam ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s really great to hear you talk about Brent. He’s so often overlooked in favour of Ben and Jeremy. He was fifteen years older than Leo, played him very quiet and gentle, used his native Canadian accent yet you still totally believed the character. A truly gifted actor who doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

    • @mylittlepeonies8693
      @mylittlepeonies8693 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To each their own but Ben and Micaela are very similar in age to Lucille and Leo’s age when it happened, as was Jeremy in this performance. But it is very refreshing to hear a different perspective after all the talk about casting having to be accurate to age because I do agree with you for the most part

    Whoever captioned this was absolutely wrong about the use of the n-word. The actors say "niggra," and is written that way in the script as well. Captioning it with the n-word with an "er" at the end is inaccurate to the script. Source: I've played Minola McKnight and I still own the full script.
