  • In the far west of Xinjiang province, beyond Mongolia, lies the biggest concentration of steam operating in the World when this was filmed in December 2009, all centred around the Sandaoling Mining Railway. Here , three or four times a day, could be seen the spectacular sight of top n' tailed JS 2-8-2's powering 60 plus bogie empties over the eight miles of semi-desert wilderness from the China Rail interchange to the mining complex. In this programme we visit Xibolishan where non-stop action makes this one of the best locations on the Sandaoling complex for appreciating the continuous, intense twenty four hour a-day operation. Exclusive footplate action aboard JS No. 8188 covers a typical roster, where empties are taken down to a gallery for loading with spoil. Running time: 2 HOURS. Available on Standard or Blu-ray High Definition DVD.www.paulwilsonproductions.co.uk

They are actually new diesels that arrived in many parts of China including the Jing Peng Pass where DF4's have hauled trains since the beginning of 2006.

I guess this is like they used to say for a heavy pull it is better for the engine to go in reverse there is better traction in reverse. that is what they use to say when steam trains were very young.
