Love ya work Wayne ,especially when you put subtitles , make for great learning . My partner is indo and im trying to learn the lingo, your videos help sooo much👍
Thanks Wayne! Watching this (and your boat journey back) I can't help but be happy to be back in Bali, feels like coming home!!! 😄 Still, very much looking forward to our first ever Lombok adventure in June - and super excited be be heading back to Bali again next month - it's lovely feeling like I'm there via your regular adventures in the meantime - keep up the great 'work'! 😊🙏
Hi lib. Thank so much. I think we all live vicariously through some youtubers when we're not there ourselves. Aren't we lucky to have such a great resource to help us bide our time until we get back. Im excited for you returning so soon, probably not as excited as yourself. :) Cheers.
When I was travelling SE Asia in the 80s and 90s the Lonely Planet really was a traveller's bible. But it distorted a lot of places. Those that were included hit the jackpot while other equally good places were overlooked. I also heard tales of some of the freelance reviewers expecting kickbacks. The bar for entry is much lower for local businesses now. Just a smart teenage grandson and an internet connection. As you mentioned in another video ride hailing apps are also destroying a lot of tout business models. I'm travelling India at the moment and use Uber all the time, not to actually book a ride, but to get an idea of a fair price when bargaining with tuk-tuks etc. Happy travels, Wayne 😊
Hi Aaron, good to hear from you again. And I agree with everything you said - I'd also heard LP writers were getting slings for promoting some places. For fifteen years or so LP was indeed my bible but eventually I just cut out the maps. :) Hope you're enjoying India!
We have been coming to Bali on and off since the early nineties. Our next trip in October we are planning on Padangbai,Amed and Sideman,as we love the ocean as well as the jungle.Just to relax ,chat to locals and soak in the Bali life.Look forward to more of your charming videos and helps me learn their language a bit more👍🏝️
Selemat Malam, Wayne. Baik sekali, beautiful harbor city on the east coast of Bali with long ears, turban, wearing man. When I first started traveling to Indonesia, I read "Bill Dalton's Indonesian Handbook" and went out on my own, talking to people in stores, warungs, villages finding good places to stay. The Chinese restaurant owner wearing the Jade pendant in Padangbai you would have been my first contact.
I get the sense we're very similar travelers, Liz. I hope we get the chance to sit down some time over a coffee and share some tales from Indonesia. thanks as always.
Im a bannana lover too Wayne and as a kid loved my bannana sandwiches with a sprinkle of suger, in later years an old girlfriend put me onto ground pepper on my bannana sandwiches and i have never looked back, love em, call me strange😂
Great video as usual. An interesting side note; I stopped in a motel on my voyage up the coast to FNQ and paused in a motel with a youtube enabled TV (not connected to my tech) and typed "Fiasco" and nothing else and you were second on the list. Looks like you've influenced the algorithm.
That's interesting and encouraging, dk. Maybe this damn youtube caper might start paying dividends at some point. :) I really appreciate you passing this information on as you wonder sometimes if you're making any ground. Cheers.
Padangbai seems chill and lovely&just relaxing looking at water would be nice. I've read Balinese can earn from 70 per week for low end and upto a few hundred for skilled workers I usually get asked for around $50 from drivers for the day upto 8 hours Is this the going rate? I find it difficult to navigate shorter trips as drivers I meet generally want full days pay. I figured you would know more than me Finding long-term places in Ubud is a great topic I wish I was the conversation starter master like yourself Thanks Wayne Enjoy your bananas
Hi Stephanie. I think my friend paid around 600,000 for a driver for the day recently although you may find cheaper perhaps. I don't have an understanding of recent car hire rates other than Ubud to Kuta, and Lembar to Kuta, Lombok. Maybe a walk around Ubud one morning knocking on doors and showing people what things cost currently might make for a good video - thanks for the suggestion. Cheers.
@fiascodagama1 thanks Wayne, sometimes I just want a driver for shorter time but they appear fixated on all day price regardless of how long you need a driver I will have to organise an airport pick to Sanur when it gets closer as well and the homestay owners often have transport service,Sanur got completely drench again Have a good evening Cheers 🍻
They probably don't have them these days, but if I strayed at a good guest house, I would take a handful of business cards and sometimes exchange them with travellers from the other direction. I was travelling to.
Hi Marisa. I've heard them and was only thinking yesterday if I hear them again I'll go over and see if I can take a quick video. Kids are indeed a happy and fun bunch. :)
Hi Robert. i hope my Kuta, Lombok videos didn't create the idea there are no friendly people there, that's not the case as there there are plenty. It's just different compared it to Bali. I hope you have a great trip in June. cheers.
Hi Wayne, yes I used to travel with that book you sustained some fantastic places very cheap but very good and nice and clean , Anyway, keep up the good work love it when you speak Indonesian I can understand a little bit like a baby but it’s good Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia. I’m in the big island
Bali's a very tourist driven island and the cynical part of me thinks the Balinese are friendly as they see us as potential customers, it becomes ingrained in them, however after Wayne's interactions with locals I'm not so sure
@@ausjen In my experience a lot of the shop staff are not Balinese and can be temporary friendly. But once business is done (with Balinese) they will sit and talk or offer a drink. Over the decades I have also made a few friends originally from Java who will sit for hours with me just talking about family and life experience. Maybe the Island of the Gods affects all who journey there. Well maybe not all taxi drivers!🤣
@@ausjen I understand how you might have come to the conclusion the Balinese kindness is money driven, Jen - and believe it's true in certain situations and circumstances. However, I genuinely believe the Balinese at their core are very considerate, kind, fun, and gentle people after being witness at close quarters to how they interact with each other.
Ha , I do enjoy your clips and I am also a seasoned Indo traveller , but I don't know any seasoned bules that question the cost of fruit and certainly not coconut . 20000 for a coconut is the rate all over Indo for bules that's just how it is , I never haggle for food , it's rude
Wayne, what was the name of the Warung you were at? Would love to support them when I will be back in Bali in the coming months. Apologies if I missed the name 🙈
I'm curious if you've lived or traveled for extended periods in Indonesia or another Muslim country. If so, can I ask why or how you've come to this conclusion? What was your personal experience?
@fiascodagama1 I've got something like 40 years of experience in Asia. I've lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan and travelled thought South East Asia which includes Malaysia and Indonesia.
@@robertnicholson1409 I've travelled to all those places frequently. It would be helpful if you give examples of actual negative things that directly affected you personally. Can you give a quick 2 or 3 examples?
Do you find local Indonesian/Bali people boring? I think they're really fun and interesting. As my channel's theme is talking to local people you may like to watch any number of other youtube channels that can offer what you don't find boring.
