I have done every martial art under the sun''...........Chiba sensei was the most ''scary'' of them all. my spleen still hurts. it hurts more when I watch these videos of him. thank you sensei chiba for your teachings and your thrashings.

      Shibata Sensei as well.

He was an order of magnitude more scary in his own dojo, teaching his own students than he ever was at any seminar. The simple reason being that he expected more of his own students because they knew what he expected. He was always raising the bar just a bit higher than his students could handle and thereby forcing them to improve.

Agree. People who criticise Aikido have no clue to old school aikido.

This is real old school. Very interesting material for study

Thank you very much for sharing this video. It helps the practice a lot.
I wish I could see Chiba sensei, Shibata sensei or some highly skilled person executing the 12 + 12 jo techniques on Tsuki and Shomenuchi.

Sorry for the delay in replying. The 12 Jyo Basics video is available from Birankai. You'll see Archie Champion and George Lyons as uke for Chiba sensei as he demonstrates all 36 basics (plus variations).

Thanks for this. Our Sensei here in Bermuda spent some time at San Diego, Chiba had been to us 3 or 4 times. Most terrifying, yet amazing spirit to ever be in a room with. One afternoon we all went fishing after taking a morning beating and he and Mrs Chiba made us fresh sushi for dinner.

The intensity in his own dojo was always an order of magnitude above what it was like when he was visiting another dojo, or teaching a seminar, as he was dealing with his own students and he expected more of them. Imagine being in that environment every. single. day.

Chiba sensei was not one who enjoyed what most Aikido has become in recent yeas.
