I personally used this method to gain 45 ranks in one day of core mining. Merit gains are directly proportional to sales price. So the higher the price the more merits you will earn. The "trick" is finding the right set of rings in a system with a high price and demand for what you're mining, and it also has to be one that the power you pledged is also exploiting or reinforcing. There must be something I'm not figuring out correctly. I have a non-odyssey copy of elite dangerous and I'm pledged to Edmund Mahon, I am not getting the weekly assignments for powerplay and I just tried to get merit by mining in one of his exploited systems and I got nothing out of it. Previously I also tried bounty hunting yet nothing, it seems I'm stuck getting merit only by transporting the Alliance data from Gateway to fortifying systems... Is it because I lack Odyssey? Or do I need to wait for the current cycle to end and reach rank 2 to unlock more ways to get merit? What I am missing out?
@@saffieification I solved it yesterday, it wasn't odyssey fault. I hadn't realize that when downloading back Elite the default setting was for the legacy version... so yeah. I was simply playing on the old version
Supposedly, you can sell in other systems, but I've never seen it work. I'm sticking to same-system, and it never fails. Find one with a hotspot and a good selling price, and you're golden. Also, look for a good selling price in Inara, then check out the system even if it doesn't show up on edtools. Not all the hotspots are marked in edtools. Cheers!
I dont think the system needs to be controlled by your power. You get merits towards undermining when mining in another powers system. However i have not tested since the update to see if that still works.
The Sad part is having to sell in the same system, why do they care what system the minerals have been mined in? makes no sense... it's hard enough to find a place to sell for a good price. it's like if they had made trading only give merits if you bought AND sold from system your power controls..who cares if you by from another power... why can't I mine outside the bubble, the middle of the bubble is all depleted reserves already!
Good stuff. The mining is part of the play, but it really comes down to trade and profit for the power. (I wonder how big of a part mining will be with "colonization" coming in the near future.)
While this guide is valid, it bears mention that it can be a major PITA trying to find a suitable system in which to mine - especially if you wanted to just laser the rocks and watch youtube. So far I've only found one reinforcement system in Nakato Kaine's space with a platinum hotspot, and the sale prices there are below galactic average - which seems to reduce merit returns. Really hope FDev make it so we can mine from any system and deliver to the system we want to help else it's going to be a pretty low tier activity.
I think they might have nerfed this a bit with the Cobra V update, because I did some core mining after it and got 1 merit per 2090 profit instead of 1332. 🤷♂️
Was so frustrated that I found a decent system that would buy my resources and was reinforced for my power and had a ring. Mined for several hours and was so excited to only realize this system only had medium landing pads😢. Wish they allowed sale in any reinforcing system. This would be even more miserable for factions with less territory. I think I see a potential reason they did it. Juicy systems would be worth fighting for…just feels overly restrictive compared to other avenues, especially since you will rarely get optimal returns in the same system.

Tools need to be updated to integrate powerplay 2.0 because trying to cross-reference Inara and other tools with powerplay system status manually is just awful.
Glad to share one. They aren't spectacular for merits though. Maybe 8k per night or so. Perhaps that will change when pods have value again. Hit me on Inara for build.
wow I guess you got lucky and found a Pristine reserve system with a metallic ring containing a platinum hotspot that has a station that has Industrial or High Tech economy and that is controlled by your power on the very first try...if only it had been in boom and expansion you'd have made 4x the profits/merits..... Also, I pretty much went through the list of 100 systems on the website to try and find a system like that in Torvald's controlled systems...found none so pledged to Kaine instead.
I found a better one for Pranav that's getting 230K for platinum, and it didn't show up in edtools. So find a good price first, then go check it out for rings and belts in-game.

This is speed based. Also mine everything thats above 30k. I.e. forget indite at 10-20k credits etc. But silver is also around 40kish, bertrandite etc

You could even create an asteroid map and just spend 50 hours here for all 800k merits I think

No, it can be exploited, fortified, or stronghold. I'm making a bunch in a stronghold system right now.

Does selling exploration data get you merits? I'm about to go on an expedition.
Yes. but not much. 3.5bil exobio is 7-8k merits. 40-50mil in exploration data - ~7.5k merits
Let's see how long this lasts before getting nerfed to the abyss!

I have not found any for Torvald wither... but there are several in LYR
