  • This vehicle came in with a long history, a severe misfire complaint that two shops couldn’t fix, and lots of parts changing along the way. Testing and careful analysis led to a surprising fix. All of the testing methods shown can be applied to any vehicle with a coil-on-plug ignition system.

    I have a Comment directed to all of the people who have made rather negative comments below, including all those who suggest a DIFFERENT way of solving the particular problem that existed here.
    The most important thing for EVERYBODY to realize is that Paul is an Instructor at a SCHOOL. He is a TEACHER. This is not a production shop where the objective is always to get the problem fixed as fast as possible and ship it out the door.
    If you watch some of Paul's other videos, particularly if you watch a LOT of them, you will hear Paul point out, many times, that the problem that is diagnosed on various cars they get at the school MIGHT have been solved "faster" if different techniques were used. Paul has enough experience and "gut feeling" that he COULD solve many problems faster, on his own, in the field. Watch some of his video's where he is by himself, working out in the field. If you want to watch him do the FASTEST possible complete diagnos'es, with 100% confidence of the solution, that is where you will see it.
    But that IS NOT THE POINT OF THE EXPERIENCE. His primary job is teaching students at the school. Remember these are STUDENTS, most with little or no experience doing diagnostics. Paul's job is to give them the strongest possible set of skills and knowledge in the two short months he has them.
    New people going into the field NEED to know how to use ignition scopes, and they NEED to know all the in's and out's of scanners, and how to use all the features of the scanner.
    It is the PROCESS of going through the initial assessment and then determing Direction. Watching all of the experiments that were done using the Picoscope teaches a LOT about how engine timing works. It helped me "think" in terms of what is actually happening inside the engine. Remember what an "odd-ball" situation this car was.
    There are MANY ways to find a given problem, usually, but what typically happens in Paul's classroom and workshop is they go through as many of those process'es and methods as possible, as a learning experience. Watch the video about the Ford IAC. It will explain this whole idea better than I can.
    Some students might end up working in environments where some of the fairly expensive and exotic instruments like pressure Transducers are not available, but other students WILL eventually have access to some of those tools. That pressure transducer is 750 bucks, so not everybody will have one early in their career, but the ones who can afford it will have a very useful tool.
    I have never had any formal training in automotive work. I've worked on my own cars for 35 years. I thought I was a halfway decent mechanic UNTIL I started watching scanerdanner's video's. I've watched most of them now, many of them 2 or 3 times. I feel like I have gotten a Doctorate degree in Engine Diagnostics and Driveability, FOR FREE!
    I don't even have Paul's book yet. I have a very decent compliment of mechanics' tools and equipment, but I don't yet have any kind of scope, or scanner. I plan to get both when I can afford them. About three years ago I had a no-start on my 1999 Sebring. Out of embarassment, I won't say how much time I spent trying to find the problem (it was DAYS).
    What I will say, is that if I had an ignition scope, and the knowledge to use it, that I would have had the solution in less than an hour. Turned out to be the coil, even though the resistance of both windings was within spec.
    If I had the same problem now, I would be able to find it almost immediately, if I had a scope.
    So, the main point is, THOUSANDS, YES thousands, of people and professional techs have learned, and been helped, by the video's that Paul has created and posted.
    SO, maybe some of us should leave our ego's at the door, and acknowledge that he is a gifted diagnostician, and a great teacher.

      It's mainly kids making those comments. THEY KNOW IT ALL. Like nobody else has ever lived. Any experienced mechanic would know better and keep their ignorant comments to themselves, The kids just show their ignorance and immaturity like children do.

      douglas lee You know, he also mentioned that it had been to a couple shops and they didn't find it. They just changed parts and failed. It's typical of people to pretend like they know better. That's why I don't bring my cars to a shop... ever! All the shops where I live are terrible.

    I’m an electronics technician.
    My simple rule.... mark/label before you remove!
    Take photos.
    Remove one at a time.
    This guy is by far the best instructor I have listened to!

    I had this issue today. Replaced spark plugs, valve cover gaskets and grommets, oil change, transmission fluid change (not a flush), air filter and fuel filter change, and cleaned TB.
    Started my Escape and had this misfire issue, one of the coil pack wires broke, made a new connection and soldered it, and it kept misfiring.
    Paused, looked for a similar situation for my Escape on ScannerDanner channel, and here it was. Even though I don't have all the tools, I did switched the coil packs around and the misfire/not firing was on the same 4 and 6 cylinders. Spark plug coils were connected wrong. Switched them and a whole new Escape emerged.

    GREAT detective work. Many years ago I got a call from a restoration shop working on a loaded 68 Mercury Cougar. Car would crank but not run. New plugs , cap, wires, points, etc. The guys were frustrated to say the least. I noticed early on that the dash was apart and the instrument cluster was out. Most Fords of that era ran the ignition thru the tach. I hooked up the factory tach double connector and told the guy to try it. The Merc started right up. Sometimes you have to go with the basics.     gf bought an 04 escape with a misfire... she didnt bring me with for that purchase, anyway ive been trying to figure this shit out for two years. finally replaced the exhaust manifold gasket (etc) the catalytic converter and the o2 sensor hoping that the cat was the problem... nope. it was worse. checked the plugs, the coils, misted the engine in the dark, asked everyone i know etc etc... while i was having a few beers preparing myself for a failing compression test, i saw this vid... clicked on it. read the description. went outside. reversed 4 and six, since they were both misfiring... and the problem is history.... the gasket was fucked, the cat was fucked and the 02 sensor was probably fucked, so i didnt end up wasting any money and i stumbled across the right vid at the right time. thanks for the upload ScannerDanner

    This guy is awesome. I bought this o4 ford escape very cheap due to simple engine misfiire.previous owner gave up after replacing numerous brand new ignition components, sensors, coins, including whole exhaust front to tailpipe..so I bought it,convinced i would find problem.. well after so many headaches i said , " the heck with this Nice looking P.O.S" but if not for this professional,genius,considerate, and dedicated individual who took his time , patience and effort to do this video, I got her driving like a dream...I got vehicle for a while!!!! GOD WILL BLESS YOU FRIEND!! MY KIDS AND I TRULY APPRECIATE UR GREATNESS..

    Did valve covers on this same car two days ago, did not mark coil wires and scanner (did not) show misfire even tho vehicle was clearly misfiring.Would have never thought I crossed those wires because of the way they reach.Took intake back off twice looking for a unplugged wire or hose.was just about to set car on fire when I found your video LOL. WOW MAN.WOW. Professional mechanic 30yrs. Did I say WOW! Saw your video and went to my Job on Sunday I was so excited to see if this was the issue.Yup it was.WOW MAN.A lot of techs and mechanics know how to run test and use a scanner,you do something a lot different from most of us.I tip my hat to you.

    What I enjoy most about your videos, is that you show the step by step ways you diagnosed the problem. Even how you changed the settings on the scope. How you hooked up the test equipment.     lol, I still feel that way about what I know. Here is how it goes.....the more you learn in this field, the more you realize how much more you need to learn.
    give yourself some time my friend, I just simply have 20 years on you and am learning everyday myself. your time now in the field is where all of your education will come together. there is no substitute for a "bad call" on a diagnosis. you'll never forget it and never do it again

    Excellent tutorial. Watching your videos for a few weeks has given my career a bit of a boost. Been in "the trade" here in the UK for 30+ years, and have up to now, been relegated to engine, transmission, and suspension work. Over the past week alone, I have had 3 noteable successes, and raised eyebrows when I broke out the scope leads for our aged MODIS for the first time ever, and got to the bottom of a problem that has haunted the garage for months. So I'm feeling confident that had you used the low amp clamp on each coil lead, with a high amp clamp on the starter cable individually, instead of all 3 together (14:20) you'd have picked up on the discrepancy without the pressure transducer. If I'm right, you've tought me well. If I'm wrong. Time to retire lol... Thanks man...

    Awesome! The compression loss due to cylinder wash is a very important variable! Just had a 2001 Escape with the same 3.0 V6 with an unplugged coil that showed no compression whatsoever on one of 6 cylinders. Compression came back after running the engine for a few minutes. Had this video in the back of my mind while connecting the front three coils too lol

    Hi Paul. You remind me of a (then) teenage neighbor of mine Steve Woods dating back to 1965 when I was only 8 years old. We could go outside any time of the day and see him under the hood of a car out on the street working away.
    Anyway, one of the most valuable lessons Steve taught me, where any kind of ignition or firing problems are involved, is to always check the ignition wires first to ensure they exactly conform to the firing order posted on the engine block or hood sticker. Particularly where weekend warrior or novice mechanics become involved.
    Steve was working on an engine one summer afternoon which was missing badly. A glossy jet black 450 V8 Pontiac Firebird which had a sparkling metallic gold "firebird" overlay across its hood. Totally sweet and a thing of beauty to be sure!
    We could see from the attached diagnostic equipment (dwell/tach gauges & timing lamp) the timing needed to be seriously advanced. So as you'd fully expect Steve proceeded rotating the distributor in the customary manner. But he couldn't advance it to the point needed since the distributor had reached its stop at the extreme CCW position.
    After a single minute of head scratching and deep thinking he came up with a very clever solution I'll never forget. It involved manually advancing the ignition wire (firing) order by +1; rather than advancing it the usual way using physical distributor rotation. Once the wiring firing order was advanced accordingly he rotated the distributor back near center position and the timing read smack dead on and that engine ran like a wet dream forever thereafter.
    Rather than just 2 of the ignition wires being out of proper firing order they were all offset by -1 relative to the entire sequence. That, essentially being the same underlying errant cause you identified in this case study just carried to the fullest possible extent.
    One of my greatest regrets in life was not spending every waking moment out front of Steve's house watching his every move. At the youthful age of just 16 he was one of the most dazzlingly talented mechanics I've ever had the privilege of getting to watch let alone stand next to shoulder to shoulder. A truly gifted mechanic in all regards. You impress me in all those same ways Paul.

    Just tried it on mine and sure enough, the engine fired right up!. still a bit erratic at idle, but that could be a bad O2 sensor or dirty injectors. hell, just getting her out on the road and giving her a good hard run should clear a lot out too.

    Aaaaaamazing, a client came with the same misfire problem. he told me the engine was just replace ! replaced the melted cats ,took a look at the egr spark ......spent 2hours cheking then i came across your video .....and believe it or not the wiring harness was upside down just like you!     You will be very satisfied with Pauls e book. I have it and have purchased several dozen other books on the same field and it is the best of the best.     There's a good example of how a moment of inattention by one of the first people to work on the car lead to a huge, expensive problem. Also, it's a good example of a recurring theme in diagnostics -- keep your thinking simple and go at the problem in an orderly sequence. Without the pressure transducer you could have done this by showing cyl#1 spark on one channel, and other cylinders on channel 2, looking at spark delay to be sure spark was firing in the correct delay order from #1.

    I paid a shop to diagnose my car not starting. I knew it had fuel and spark. Turns out it didn't have enough spark. Needed a cap and rotor. I told them thanks, but I'd do the work myself. A-holes reversed my wires. Misfired like crazy, but I figured it out pretty quick. Great video!

    The process you used is always the best way to drive home diagnosing a problem. I went to HVAC & R school many years ago and the lengthy diagnostics way back then affords me the knowledge and experience to ID problems like this a lot quicker. You are spot on and this is how you learn to be a master of your craft.

    Dear Mr Danner. I can't tell you how many times i have considered the wiring harness to be the writing on the wall with regards to where to plug in the injectors. Once again you have shown how enhanced evaluation, is vital to profitability and effectiveness. There's no shame that the other garages were unsuccessful;:this one would have thrown me for a loop also. You evaluated a lot of issues that has made this on of the most informative videos to study. Can't say it enough. Thanks you

    I was just watching this and thought, I don't have all these tools and tests, and I'm not going to know if this is my problem... But I just went out and swapped my 4 and 6 coil plugs, and BAM! car running like a champ and no codes firing anymore. THANK YOU!!!!!

    You just fixed my 2003 escape with the same Identical issue and at the same time, taught me to use my scope properly . Granted I don't have the same sexy probes you do, but this instruction got me to the same result!
    Yup, reversed 4 and 6. I saw them firing out of order just like this video. I have no idea when I did this or how, but it was all me that hooked them up backwards. Now I feel smarter, and humbled at the same time. Thanks a million for the video!

    Thank God I found this site. Have been tearing my hair out for 2 weeks trying to figure what was wrong (misfire #4 and #6) after replacing PCV, plugs, all coils. I would never have guessed I had the wires backwards (4 to 6 and 6 to 4; 5 is in middle either way) -- especially since the wrong way fits better as its longer. THANK YOU ScannerDanner

    An excellent video demonstrating the use of advanced test equipment coupled with the knowledge of how to interpret their data. Prior knowledge, experience and history solves many problem cases, but the remaining 2 to 5% are the jobs that kill a shop's productivity. I appreciate you taking the time to show us in "slow motion" the logic used in troubleshooting an electromechanical system, along with the tools that give you the necessary information to come to a correct solution. Great job!

    wow.man i wanna give you a hug.i had changed spark plugs and ignition coil on all cylinders.i didn't remember how the wire went.see too look write.car started to run like crap at times back fire.long story short you a life saver.i had the freaking wires reversed.Thank you so much for your educational videos.very help ful in my case and sabe me hundreds

    THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had the same symptoms on my engine after swapping from a Taurus and I assumed it was something from my friend stepping on the wiring harness, but I had just reversed them. This was my first engine swap and I was very discouraged by it all.

    Excellent process and flow. I usually always goto sec ign voltage for a misfire case and it has always offered the most information in regards to the time it spends to do it. Great for finding direction towards the suspect system, fuel, mech, spark. Ur awesome. Thankyou, and love your brother's vids also. U guys rock.

    Watching the lecture videos that suggested we watch this video was a great way to see a "variable". But holly cow,all that work and money for a simple problem. As soon as I saw 240 degrees and your explaining the firing order it became clear what happened, that was a real good case study.

    my 03 escape had the exact same thing happen it had missed from the day I bought it but then it got really bad I replaced coil packs plugs intake gaskets fuel filter I did everything I could think of so I turned to TH-cam and thank god u made this video I switched the wires around and bam the missing stopped the jerking was gone lack of power restored I then took my battery cable of for a few mins and now the check engine light is off ...thank u man I had lost hope that I would ever fix it

    This is such an easy thing to do wrong going back together like you said you would never look at it like that but someone putting it back together might not think the harness is supposed to be routed over the cable cover like that. Love this video great diagnosis and process!!!!

    THANK YOU! Just replaced the valve cover gaskets(due to oil leaking into spark plug wells), spark plugs and all new coil packs. I got the coil packs for $24 for all 6 and did this for my daughter in law. After all the doubt in the cheap parts and my ability to do this, sure enough 4 and 6 were missing when I finished. After watching 8 videos tonight, I saw this one, ran out to the garage, switched 4 and 6 and she runs like new! You sure saved face for me! Makes me wonder how many Escapes went to the junkyard for this! 😂 Great job with the details as will. I have a decent amount of tools but not like you. I’m not sure I ever would have found it. Note: I took the wires off of the coil overs but my son put them back on-still my fault as I should have noticed it. Thanks again!

    This just saved me. I replaced timing cover, intake, and valve cover gaskets. I did plugs while I was in there. Started up the car and it started shaking. I thought oh crap. I noticed I broke the crank sensor connector. Replaced that. Still had problems. I never thought I had the coils reversed. Went and swapped them. Rubs great now. NEXT TIME I will label the coils

    Thank you soooo much for your video. I too reversed the harness during a tune-up, and drove myself crazy trying to figure out why I had a misfire. The reverse trail of the harness looks correct, even though it isn't. Thanks again, and God bless you.

      Yep well stupid Ford put little plastic marks at the ends of the wires that like to fall off after some years. Unbelieveable that its this hard to know which wire goes to which plug....!!! Stupid design if you ask me

    Great find on the harness, I was looking at the harness and it did not look routed right, but thought it was moved for testing, been some time since I have worked on one of those.

    you know it may have been a simple fix and by closely looking at it MAYBE it could have been found more quickly, but I am glad that ScannerDanner took the time and did all the testing. For me this is the enjoyable and learning part of his videos. If he would have just switched the wires right off I would not have gotten other valuable information on testing. thanks ScannerDanner and keep up the excellent videos!

    Thank you so much for this video...you saved my wallet and my sanity!!!!!! I just wanted to change the spark plugs and then ran into this problem when putting everything back together. Took the intake manifold on and off 5 times thinking there was a vacuum leak or something. Engine light came on and got two codes for cylinder #4 & #6 which then led me to google and youtube. SO GLAD I came across your video, you saved my life! Thanks again!!!

    I honestly thank you soooo much for this video!!! I fixed my car thanks to you after a month of headache and probably unnecessary troubleshooting and wasted money with the converter!     Wow.. Great job Paul. I wish I had this one, must have been fun. Had me puzzled for a sec but clearly the scope didn't lie. And if I might add that this is an example of why us older techs like a final confirmation test to verify what we suspect. I could see someone tearing into the timing components with just cylinder four as evidence.

    Great video I wanted to thank you I was in the same situation the mechanics could not figure it out until I went home remind you he had my car for two day in his shop and my wife told me come home and do your research online and I saw your video and within 10 minutes I walk back and told him what I saw in your video and sure enough the wires were backwards. There next idea was the computer but thanks to your video it did not go that far. I was only there for a tuneup when all this happened and the car was running in good condition when I drop it off unbelievable

    I have been using a Fluke PV-350 and it worked great. I just recently got the Pico WPS-500 and just wanted to show it off. It provides a cleaner, more detailed picture with the advantage of calibrated scales already loaded into the pico software. Also with WPS-500 kit I now have all of the necessary adapters for fuel pressure and better hardened adapters for compression (eliminates in-accuracies in compression psi readings) Also they do make adapters to convert to and from a BNC type lead.

    Brilliant Paul, The best vid yet I think. Just hope the customer is happy to pay you what that job is REALLY worth. This is where the average customer will only really want to pay you for the fix (30 seconds) and not the TOTAL FIX (3+ hours) if you get what I'm getting at. Please please keep the vids coming

    Thanks both of you guys I been fixing cars for over 40 Years and I love my 2008 Ford Escape 3.0. but I seeing it's getting to the point Car Dealer are getting to the point you can't replace the ECU with out going to the dealership and the new car have so many stupid thing that can stop your car from starting strongly thinking about going back to a 66 Mustang you can tuneup the car in 20 mins remove/install and rebuild the Engine in a weekend

    This is a great catch. In the old days with distributors and plug wires, checking the timing with a timing light was a standard part of any misfire issues. It is too easy to neglect it with modern coil over plug ignition systems. It's a good example of how useful it can be to label everything as you pull off the plug wires to do a tune up; a simple Sharpie marking pen could have prevented all the trouble.
