Hey there, You of the Wolf Cult! Here is a little Flamenco Guitar for your Audio & Visual pleasure systems. This is a collaboration of Al dimeola, (With the Glasses) , former Lead Guitarist of keyboardist Chick Corea's group "Return To Forever" in 1974 (with Stanley Clarke On Bass & Lenny White on Drums), & Paco De Luci'a, one of the first flamenco guitarists to branch into & cross over the classical and jazz musical spectrum. this "live" track features These two fantastic individuals doing a spirited, Lightning fast dueling guitar combo version of a tune from Al's 1977 "Elegant Gypsy" album entitled "Mediterranean sundance". These boyz can pick!!! Observe & be amazed! Later, Jonah P.S. (Paco passed away back in 2014 &... by the sheerest of coincidences, I work with his cousin Jose' from Madrid.)

You have to understand that these guys are legends, both at the top of their genres. It takes talent, and a lifetime of dedication to reach where they are.

There are even older legends who's names escape me at the moment but, in recent times of being recorded where anyone can hear I'd say Paco is at the top. He also gets many bonus points from me for his finger style instead of picking. I tried finger picking and it's way more dedication todo it on the level he does than using a pick. Sadly gave up on it because I suffered nerve damage and can't sense what I'm doing except with a pick.

not just top of their genres. true virtuosity is beyond genre. for guitarists, the flamenco tradition is the highest level of virtuosity a guitarist can achieve.

While there isn't concrete proof for either of these quotes, the media often resorts to using rock stars' opinions to validate the genius of Paco or flamenco. Shortly after Paco's passing, there was an article translated from Spanish entitled "Rock Stars don't understand flamenco" in El País, which sheds light on this issue. Nevertheless, it's widely agreed that Paco was an unparalleled talent in the realm of flamenco and possibly one of the finest guitarists overall.

The technique Paco use is called "picado" its not easy, takes years to master (or at least try to master) and its very taxing on the fingers. Pacos been doing it since he was really young. Its amazing that even at the age he was on the video he could do it without much trouble. Age don't come free and speedy techcniques are even harder as one grown old.
Al DI Meola is another beast on his own.
But Paco is flamenco, its in his blood. When one talk about flamenco, only a very tiny amount of guitarist can be considered to be in the same boat as Paco. And most of them said he was the best.
Oh!, and lets not forget improvisation, they know each other for years, and theres no one time they play this song the same, its just a frame, and they build the song on it different each time they play it.

That show blew me away (Di Meola jammed with Santana during the encore)! Then I saw the Paco De Lucia/Al Di Meola/John McLaughlin show at DAR Constitution Hall (Washington D.C.) the next year. The live album that came out from that tour is still one of my favorite live albums of all time! I also saw a later tour with those same guys (at The Wax Museum) with special guest Steve Morse!! OMG! It was ridiculous! I've seen Al with Return to Forever a couple times too, as well as on the Electric Rendezvous tour. He is so amazing! You guys should hear him plugged in! He RIPS!!

The incredible thing is that Paco has it both easier and harder at the same time: easier because he has "four more picks" than Al, since he uses all of his fingers to pick at some point, having easier acces to different strings in short bursts; yet MUCH harder because using all those five fingers in unison at those speeds is, as any half baked guitarist worth their while will tell you, f'ing hard.

Wow, I didn't know you reacted to this. In the 1980s I ran across a guitar magazine and there was an article about who is the most influential guitarist. They asked a couple dozen of the top guitarist their opinion.
Over half of the guitarists polled had 1 name in either #1, 2 or 3.
    That name was Al DiMeola.
I went to the record store but could only find Elegant Gypsy.

What I truly love about this video is, if you watch Paco and Al, the audience disappears for them. Once they start trading solos, you can see they start feeding off each other, and there is no longer anyone there but the other guitarist for both of them. Two true virtuosos enjoying jamming together on one of their old classics: a beautiful moment
A note on Al DiMeola: legend holds that when he was learning guitar, he lived in a small, paper-thin walled, NY apt. He couldn't use an amp, so he got used to playing everything staccato (so he could hear himself), which explains his blazing pick speed.

I can't believe that you, being musicians, didn't know about Paco de Lucia... In any case, I congratulate you for your genuine reaction.

Ver estos moustros, hace ver pequeñitos a otros grandes interpretes de la guitarra, independiente del genero; soy fan del buen rock, de los Page, Clapton, Gilmour, Satriani, Bai, pero estos tipos rompieron el molde.

...And they do all this on NYLON STRING guitars... Paco's is not even electrified, it's pure acoustic with just a mic.
Nylon strings on classical guitars are WAY less forgiving than steel strings on electric, and maybe heavily distorted, guitars. You can't allow any kind of mistake. These two guys were, and Al still is (RIP Paco), at the top of guitar playing. In "Friday night in San Francisco", and in the more recently released "Saturday night in San Francisco", there are the same two guys PLUS another legend of jazz-fusion music, John McLaughlin. Totally mind blowing... They were recorded in 1981. 🙂
