  • Throughout the years sugar beets were a very important commodity for the railways in Denmark, That goes for both the State Railways (DSB), local private railway companies, as well as narrow gauge lines run directly by the sugar factories. The 1950s, which is the era I am modelling, saw a boom in sugar beets production and transportation in Denmark, both for domestic consumption and for export to neighbouring Sweden and West-Germany. For this DSB made wide use of the the newly acquired UIC standard open wagons class P (later class E) seen in this small video. The models are from Roco. Please visit my blog www.sundborg.wordpress.com for more on my plans for a layout.
    Materials used in this video:
    • Cling wrap
    • Elmer’s PVA Glue
    • Foam Board 5 mm
    • Isopropanol
    • Liquitex acrylic paint
    • White Quinoa

I do like your creativity...and your technique!

Great technique that works on any wagon load 👍 (I have memories of farm work harvesting Mangold Wurzels, an animal feed beet, October and all by hand…tough work when you are 14!)

Must have been super hard. My dad grew up on a farm in the 1950s and could testify to the fact that beets were a lot of work during all four seasons.

@@SundborgModelRailway Ha Ha, I did it the 1980’s… it didn’t get easier 🤣

that looks good. Way back in time we used to eat grapes and use the seeds for sugar beets. But this is better. Although having seen beet transports in real life i think you should give the beets lots of color of dirt and on the ground as well. But good job !

Yes, I have heard about the grape seeds- and that it would give model railway fans bad stomachs before the wagons were full 😃 More dirt is probably needed, but in the 1950s sugar beets were still harvested by hand so there were much less dirt on them than today where it is fully mechanized. 🚂

aha , hard work to do that manually. Although i do remember seeing farmworkers, in the 1960s, working the fields with new and small beetplants. Using only a shuffle Hoe. With miles to work on.

Crazy hard! I have never tried it but my dad grew up on a farm in the 1950s and confirmed that everything to do with growing beets was hard - planting, nursing, harvesting and loading - all done by hand. Farming was a lot of work 😓

That’s a great tip. I will try that sometime, although I’m more of a dog person 😃🚂🐕
