    • @1ManRandom
      @1ManRandom 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Crossfire seems to just be slang for overlapping fire, which involves two or more defensive positions set up in such a way as to cover the same area. And the term doesn’t feel right for this video, since each unit was holding effectively the same defensive position. It felt more like an advanced line formation, with each unit taking the roll of an individual row of infantry.

    • @Kijekin477

      @@1ManRandom Buddy you forget that military terms must work along both in attack and defense. More precisely there also shald be no difference if it;s infantry, artillery or mechanized forces.
      Overlapping field of fire is by definition a wider term than crossfire, because crossfire is an equivalent of flanking but without an advance into enemy position.

    • @ak6427
      @ak6427 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Debilinside I would like to point out that I don't view FoTS as a separate game, since it was an expansion (DLC) on launch and I'm kind of an old-timer. As far as gameplay goes, I think battles even in vanilla are some of the most dynamic and tactically intense fun in total war games with such distinct unit roles and the large number of factors for each engagament. The morale system is so clutch for enjoyment as well, possibly turning dire situations into heroic comebacks.
      The mod selection is mostly the reason I play base game instead of FoTS though, so I might have a slightly skewed sense of the two. Gotta appreciate the gunplay in FoTS regardless, everything feels impactful from visuals to sound design to gameplay functionality. Satisfying.

    There's a reason guns are so good in this compared to other TW representations- the accurate representation of technology.
    In Napoleonic warfare, smoothbore muskets(Meaning the inside of the barrel was smooth) were used with a spherical ball projectile. This curbed accuracy severely past 100 yards, and even before that it was shoddy. The flight was not stable and the pressure seal behind the ball when the gun fired was unregulated. Around 1830 Claudi Minie put together a bullet that was a cone that had a hollow base and grooves on the outside for grease. This allowed them to use rifling which is a pattern of spirals inside the gun barrel meant to make the bullet spin. Because it expanded it could grip the rifling better, seal in the gas behind it and be loaded faster- previously the projectiles to grip the rifling had to be very close to the barrel size itself, requiring a mallet to pound the ball down the chamber. Now it could be easily pushed down with a stick. The greased grooves helped keep the barrel moving in good order as well.
    This new conical projectile, significantly higher pressure pushing the round and stabilized flight extended the range and accuracy tremendously, with rifles instead of muskets. In the US civil war using the same tech level as Samurai an Ohio(I believe) regiment of sharpshooters had trials where applicants were required to regularly hit small targets at 800 yards to get in to the regiment. By the time of Fall of the Samurai guns had improved even further with the traditional "cartridge" we know today with a brass casing and primer in the bottom, or bullets as most people call them, had become largely standard. The Civil War era guns were converted into "Trapdoor" models that allowed a cartridge to be loaded by hand after every shot, significantly speeding it up over a loose powder and ball style. Those Springfield Trapdoor models likely would have equipped most troops at this time, though not for certain.
    This is also why the Crimean and US Civil Wars were noted for their carnage. People were being shot where they previously couldnt have and the projectile being soft unjacketed lead would mushroom on impact and often fragment leading to multiple wound channels and odd paths. These were also very large projectiles- .58 caliber, so larger than half an inch. The weight behind the impact was substantial. It was brutal business, and the game reflects that accurately.
    So, yeah. If this game has better gun play its because IRL people felt that way too.

    Fall of the Samurai was a damn interesting game because you had guns coexisting with traditional units in such a way that both had their strengths if utilized effectively. Guns NEED clear lines of sight to fire so even minor gradations in the terrain that most other units would ignore become super important considerations, to the point that missing a dip in elevation or a hillock can make your gun-line totally useless. At the same time, with clear firing lines guns will butcher any other unit. It creates this really interesting tactical space to explore that very few other Total Wars have managed to touch.

      The original RTW was where the mod scene picked up for TW games. Big stuff like Rome Total Realism and Europa Barbarorum were the O.G. big mods for TW.

    I remember when I first learned about using hills to overlap firing arcs in Napoleon. All of a sudden things became so much easier and more bloody.

  • @starkillerob
    @starkillerob 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The overlapping fields of fire is my main go to strategy in every ETW and FOTS campaign, as well as NTW, It's justs so satisfying seeing your lines of Nizam Cedit, British line, French and Japanese ranged units just absolutely devastate an enemy, most times far superior in number/strength by careful positioning, I love finishing it with a battery of howitzers/artillery right at the top of hills or inclines and a couple of elite melee units to chase em down, nothing beats FOTS gunplay though, so satisfying.
    P.S interlocking is when you're firing on one position and crossing "fire". You are right with overlapping as the term.

    Thanks Legend for giving FOTS some love. It got me playing it again and it's a blast, as it really does gun battles way better than ETW/NTW. Hoping there's a chance you do some campaign livestreams of FOTS to see how you approach that, but just happy you gave it some love even if this isn't a disaster battle.

    Loved FOTS, I had my favourite battle in a Total War game in there when I was sieged by a pretty elite half melee and half ranged army in my fort garrisoned by an entirely gun levy army. It was brilliant, by the end the air in the map looked like it was more smoke than air.

    Fun campaign tip for FOTS enjoyers. Me and a friend once did a campaign were we roleplayed The last samurai movie. The rules are:
    1. Only samurai units, melee archers and cav (only 1gunpowder unit allowed and thats wooden cannons)
    2. No modern tech
    3. No industry, only buildings that would count as feudal
    4. No AI cheese
    Would recommend to try it, its kinda easy in the beginning but once the AI start fielding elite line infantry the number of samurai required to defeat a modern army goes way up so the endgame is way harder than a normal campaign (thats usually what kills the fun for me, just right clicking to victory). Would say its probably the most fun campaign ive had in any TW game and ive played them all.

    • @googleandsusansucks
      @googleandsusansucks 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Going traditional is fun. The problem is that many people will try Aizu. They might have good bonuses but they have a very hard campaign. The first few turns are difficult. I usually ignore the "target" province to the south and instead attack Sendai. Those guys will defect to the imperial side anyway and backstab you. The worst part for me is when EDO of all clans defect to the imperial side. Like the Shoguns seat of power? So the Shogun joins the emperor against... the Shogun?

    I was hyped for a Victorian TW (like the Zulu mod for NTW) after Fots and, sure, Rome II reveal was amazing but it's a shape that everything that was done in Fots, amazing ironclad naval battles included, wasn't followed up later.

    You could call it enfilading fire. You’re basically destroying the enemy by firing at them while they are in disadvantageous positions (e.g. while they are engaging other units, or in their flanks, or when they are charging you in depth/a coloumn). Alternatively, you could say you’re concentrating firepower.

    • @thejake1453
      @thejake1453 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Enfilade fire is generally when you're firing down the "length" of a units formation, such that you can functional fire upon them all at once.
      For example, I hide a machine gunner in a forest at the end of a long road, and there is an enemy section marching down that road towards him in a column formation. If he fires he can essentially target everybody at once.

    Well, it reminds me of concept of superfiring in naval warship gun placement, for the reason that guns elevated ("superior") above the one in front of them allows two or more gun turrets to fire simultaneously forward, not just in broadsides.

    Looking it up for fun, overlapping fields of fire is when you defend from at 2 different positions that arcs each other about 30 degrees which intersect. A "defilade" is what you were searching for, where troops are protecting each other from an obstacle like a hill (reverse slope) where they support each other with overhead fire

  • @jhankhit1475
    @jhankhit1475 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Oh man I remember my Kihetai rush strat on FoTS. What's great with this game is you can defend your castles with barely any units. You can garrison about 2-3 units of levy infantry and you're pretty much set along with the free garrison of the castles. Add a couple more if you want insurance and just decide which way to expand. No fears of getting a settlement captured because you can even kill/rout half the army before they even reach the walls with 2 gun units 🤣

    Interlocking fields of fire are when two different firing angles intersect. It's a very deadly situation to be in, as it's hard to get cover from both directions at the same time.
    What you have is defense in depth.

    • @Ramschat
      @Ramschat 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I believe defense in depth is at the strategic level, when you can retreat from one line of defense into the next.

    • @fredrikhelland8194
      @fredrikhelland8194 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s called enfilading fire. Defense in depth is really on the operational level - I guess if you wanted to do it in a total war battle, you could put up multiple lines of expendable, to slow the enemy while demolishing them with artillery.

    • @adambrande
      @adambrande 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@fredrikhelland8194enfilade fire would be if the enemy is attacking one of your units that is in front of them while one of your other units shoot at the same enemy from their flank. It's like flanking but is more defensive in nature and can usually be seen in castle sieges

    • @fredrikhelland8194
      @fredrikhelland8194 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@adambrande It depends on the direction though. I’d say the enemy is moving forward in a semi-column fashion. He’s also enfilading from the sides when they’re engaged, after beating back the enemy flank attack.

    Its really nice to see someone playing fall of the samurai. Its a really great game one of the best of the series for sure, But I still prefer the base game over it in many ways just because I prefer the time period, the base game even in vanilla can kick your butt at times and definately isnt the easiest of total war games and I love the variety of units and the whole realm divide mechanic and the battles are fast paced but not too fast which I really like and the AI is pretty competent and will often make very good to the best moves to counter you. In fall of the samurai the only bad thing for me is if you decide to play a imperial gunpowder clan it can get a bit tedious after a while as its mostly spam line infantry with some artillery and cavalry and thats about it. But I agree with legend that there are more tactical and strategic things you can do, but considering the time period and technology available that makes a lot of sense.
