I am a Boer from South Africa. My ancestors had a very good relation with the German people. During the Anglo Boer War the Boers used Mauser 7×57 rifles. When WW 1 broke out there was a rebellion by the Boers not wishing to attack Deutch West Africa. I myself also have an admiration for your people. My son is married to a South African German girl. Her maiden name is Lilje. We affectionatly call our German citizens " Springbuck Germans". Please keep up your readings, I enjoy it immensely.
Excellent series! Refreshing to hear things from a German perspective, and withoutan AI voice! Served in the British army as an infantry soldier. Cannot imagine fighting in these conditions.
@TrenchDiaries 2007-2011 TA/Part time. 2011-2015 Regulars mate. Royal Irish Regiment. The usual dusty bowl of Afghanistan/wet and windy Falklands and Kenya. Best parts of the army was being away from camp! Even if it was in the worst exercise areas in the UK! Loved the other series on the UBoat and Bismark. One thing is for sure. Ideology may separate soldiers. But that brotherhood of serving and all the life that comes with it is what ultimately bands us all together!
I'm really enjoying this one, it's absolutely unfiltered and brutal, a truly honest account of war. It's not surprising that so few survivors talk about it. My late grandfather served in tanks in North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe and he did talk about his experiences. Sadly, he died when I was only four so never really got the chance to talk with him about it all. My mother was told stories but she is of a somewhat softer nature than me and when asked about the stories he told her, she simply says that it's just a long list of descriptions of how people died, and refuses to elaborate any further.
This book does a great job of showing how the sniper in German WWII doctrine was a mix of what we'd call Designated Markman activities as well as standard Sniper employment. It also does an excellent job of showing why the use and application of combat clothing is always changing. Some great stuff!
Yes, it's interesting how over the course of his career you can see the tactics and equipment evolve. He gets to attend a special sniper training course later and the tactics taught there will already be obsolete 😅
fantastic series up to now, thank you so much for this i'm finding it a joy to listen too, in a odd way with it being so graphic about war, as i think the eastern front was so brutal from what i read from books from Prit Buttar, thank you once again
Well read and nicely analysed. Thankyou for not using AI voices for these books. I appreciate the time and effort that you must put into it. The episode when he is using the disabled tank for his firing position was familiar to me even though I have not read the book. It appears in another of these memoires on yt but I cannot recall which one. About 35 years ago I met an old Wehrmacht soldier in Munich and chatted with him for a couple of hours. Although he did not go into detail, he did open my eyes. He changed my perception of what was happening in those times.
Hey Jay, yet another great series, very brutal but very enlightening on the Eastern Front fighting. Nice opening to the channel, carry on the good work.
His unit is having a difficult time in late '43. No matter, I'm certain their fortunes will improve in the summer of '44. In all seriousness, watching his friend die slowly, unable to help, in such close quarters, how awful. However long this sniper lived, I'm sure he could recall this vividly even on his last day alive.
First hand accounts tell a better story about what it was really like and not from a news propaganda reel. You do to personal account a great service as these should be told.
after 3 videos you got a new Fan! I looked for a German Audio book version of for a long time. Well I guess your English one will do the trick for me Thanks for your effort and the great narration.
I am also a Boer from South Africa, some consider us (the Boers) the greatest fighters ever, kicking the decadent juice British empire ass,but i understand where that Marshall talents came from , from our Germanic ancestry Dutch,German,Flemish , scandinavian and French and English and some Purtuguese. I have always admires the German people for their Stoicism, when i visited there j felt a deep spiritual affinity to the Germanic lands , my roots..very solid people... no crybabys!
Even though my country (USA) fought you all in both world wars, I still admire the organization, fighting abilities and spirit of the German army. I read a book about the German army while at Desert Shield/Desert Storm as a younger Marine. It was eye opening reading the experiences of those soldiers during that war. I got an admiration for them, much to the loathing of my fellow Marines. They would say “why do you believe that crap”, it ain’t true!😂 It pays to understand both sides of a war in order to understand why we should avoid it at all costs. The gruesome inhumanity of war is heart wrenching for any human being! We need to hold these evil bastards in charge of our countries who blatantly throw us into it like cord wood, accountable for their actions. I like listening to these accounts in order remind myself of the horrible things we are capable of doing to one another no matter the price for us all. Look at the past 20 years in Afghanistan and how some of our politicians just write it off like the pain it caused on both sides was nothing. Biden checking his watch as my brothers and sisters were being unloaded from the aircraft! These people need to pay for their transgressions!🤬😡
Welcom aboard brother! I agree wholeheartedly, and I am happy to present these stories to you 😎 happy that you kept reading despite your comrades teasing you about it!
It was an informative narration and truthful introduction video about the brutalities and cruelty of frontiers between German assaults and Soviet defensive trenching...However Soviet political commanders were ultra brutality and beast behaved...it was not provoking coverings Nazism regime aggressions and tyrannical against Soviet peoples.
Another great episode, this type of commentary would discourage the uninformed from glorifying war,, this type of killing is very personal and traumatic!! The confirmation of Meth being used is very startling, I have heard of this, but this is the first time that I have heard of this type action actually occurring!! Wow!! I at one time thought of trying out for sniper, but my job wasn’t infantry,, I don’t think I could’ve done that job for long! My brain gave me that idea as I always scored “ Top Gun “in my Battalion when we qualified with the M-2 Browning gun, also individual marksmanship I was always awarded the expert rifle badge this was a mark of pride for me, I would challenge my platoon to beat my score they could have a weekend pass, I was seldom beaten!! Combat is always a personal experience and I wouldn’t want anyone to think that it was pleasant or anything! No one should ever have to go through that!! Cheers Brother! Till the next time!!
Ayy Brother. I think that this is truly an experience that is unmatched. Being good with a gun is one thing (I, too, qualified "Expert" with rifle and pistol during a joint training event) but using it with intent is something completely different. Same goes for dealing with the aftermath. Stay safe!

Most Excellent Narration.

Wow! Starting hard and getting tougher. This is one heck of a series! Thanks for sharing it my friend. You deserve every sub and like.
Thank you Percy! This one is hard hitting indeed...
I feel spoilt getting 2 chapters in one upload, it made it even more immersive. Great story and narration!
Horror of war, well articulated.
Thank you!

I can believe it. My own grandfather didn't talk about the war at all, only his time in the gulag. And that in itself was gruesome 😵💫
My hat is off to you the way narrator the horrors of war but the training of Snipers.
Nice opener. It's a real pleasure to hear your posts and to see your growth in the process. Thanks.
Thanks to the regulars like you, no doubt! So thank you very much, Charles!

This is OK but Sepp's book upon which this is based is an excellent read
I can’t remember the exact Stalin quote but it was something along the line in the Soviet army it took more courage to retreat than advance
May i suggest a different reading speed to you? 0.8x would be perfect in my opinion

Sorta hard to comment positively about such sheer brutality. What a sad waste of life.
Absolutely true. I know what you mean 🫡
Is the MG42 still used today?
We use the MG3, which is an MG42 chambered for 7.62x51 and with a bit slower rate of fire. But it is basically the same gun.
