  • Snajja Maltin is a series of features on endangered crafts in the Maltese islands being produced by the Malta Crafts Foundation in collaboration with Illum ma' Steph, with the aim of generating awareness and enhance the appreciation towards traditional crafts that are regrettably in danger of being lost, in the hope that younger generations might be enticed to revive the craft sustainably, possibly through the inclusion of innovative elements.
For the first feature in the series we visited Joe Zerafa - popularly known as Il-Prince - at his workshop in Qormi, where he talked to us about the art and craft of tberfil.
Lettering or signwriting in 'tberfil' was particularly popular on modes of transport, including 'karozzini' or horse-drawn cabins; 'srieken' or horseracing carriages; farmers’ carts; construction trucks; boats, especially the 'luzzu' and the Regatta boats; and, perhaps most famously, on the old Maltese buses.
