    I retired last year after 49 years as a tech in dodge chrysler jeep tech.I was full time doing nothing but trans work.Under warrenty it was a pain in the ass to get anything done because they made us jump through hoops to get approval for repairs.Years back it was always up to me to overhaul or replace but the last several years they really got crappy. Also the parts situation has been horrible.I had vehicles waiting for months,as some of the part suppliers had gone out of business. As far as cost you would think that they would consider they are paying for that rental car for weeks or months but they don't factor that in.I believe you have the Aisin trans in your truck which were pretty reliable. If they used the Allison trans with the Cummins it would have been the best combo.

      This truck has the 68RFE. Allison transmissions fail too. In fact, I've replaced more Allisons than 68RFEs, but that might be an area thing. As in more Allisons in this area.

      @@number40Fan I had a c5500 gmc with the diesel and Allison transmission and after 117000 miles hotshoting no problems with anything. Maybe I was lucky. I was permitted up to 32000 gvw and believe me I pushed it a few times pulling huge 5th wheel trailers, 40 ft gooseneck. Great truck!

    Another great video Brock! Many years ago I worked at a car dealership (I believe the only one in the country at that time that sold both GM and Ford products but I could be wrong on that). Every manufacturer has it's own pros and cons; none of them are perfect. You have to just go with what make sense to you at the time. I do believe that since this COVID thing started quality has gone down across most industries. That's a whole conversation on its own but these days it seems to be our reality (at least for now). Good luck with your truck and you are right.....any time I am irritated with something that happens in my life it takes about two seconds to look around and see someone else with a much bigger problem. You're a good man Charlie Brown.

    I've been rebuilding transmissions since the late '70's. While it is possible the piston was damaged since day one it is unlikely. More likely the First & Reverse clutches (which are worn out) allowed the piston to overextend and knick the seal when it released. Point being; Just replacing the clutch pack and piston may be a short term repair. Addressing WHY the clutches we're slipping enough to wear them out is what is required.

    • @jeffk464

      @@jeffk464 Miles don't matter. When clutches in a transmission are slipping, or otherwise not locking up you burn a transmission up within a very short period of time.

    Times have changed. In 1985 I bought a new Astro. Within a week I had a transmission issue. I took the service manager out for a ride....the tech wasn't keeping his foot on the gas during shifting, where the problem was....and he got real worried, we were far from the dealer and he had a bum leg. I had a new transmission two days later. Drove that Astro 345,000 miles. It had a 6 cylinder with a 4-barrel on it. For a reconstituted beer can it was quick.

  • @genewilliams7497
    @genewilliams7497 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I would rather have the shop repaired transmission than an new one….. on a new one the risk would be high that the same issue would happen again. With the shop repaired unit you know the it was actually repaired correctly. Transmission life is basically all luck. I never even serviced mine for the first 450,000 miles and when opened up and serviced it looked perfect inside and know have 530,000 miles and still pulling trailers every week. Really enjoy the live and good ole boys content. 👍👍👍

    The only thing the Dodge name means nowadays is that they’re going Dodge taking care of the customer in a timely manner. Gone are the days of the marvelous A904, A998, A999 and A727 Torqflite transmissions. I had an A999 trans in my 1984 Plymouth Gran Fury which had been a petrol car on the Hoover Dam, the car had definitely been put through put through the ringer when it was a BLM vehicle but that transmission was always a trooper for the time I owned the car.

    Worked in a transmission shop and you should not be concerned with a rebuilt transmission. Technically your transmission is not rebuild but repaired. They are only replacing the piston in the reverse clutch pack. Maybe with and updated part but my guess is that the seal was originally damaged during assembly.
    I am surprised they can’t get the parts required from the manufacturer of the transmission or aftermarket which is as good if not better.
    They may also be performance clutch packs available for this tranny

    We had the transmission go out on our 2016 Toyota 4Runner. It was out of warranty but the local dealership wouldn't even give a rebuilt transmission as an option to us. We could either install a new transmission or a used transmission. We opted for a used transmission with a warranty. The transmission shop we took it to for a quote said years ago engines gave vehicles issues and were the highest cost repair. Now transmissions are very complicated and have a high repair cost. I think you would have been better off with a new or used transmission but when you are under warranty you take what you can get. Hopefully you don't have any issues after the rebuild. If you do, that is what the warranty is for.

    Most manufactures if they tell you they will order a new transmission don't believe it. They will give you a factory re-built one. I had that happen to me on a 2001 GMC. They ended up putting in a rebuilt one from the factory. Same with engines. They give you a rebuilt one not a new one.

  • @tomtransport
    @tomtransport 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, I am on the fence as far as a new trans verses a rebuild of the one you have. You had a brand new trans in that truck. It went bad so new does not always equate to better. OTOH, the rebuild of your trans specific problem, if done by a qualified tech. and performed right, may well be a better deal. I was in management of the repair end of two Ford dealerships for 47 years. When the two techs. I had, at two different dealers, rebuilt trans under warrantee or out, I could forget about a comeback. Just my two cents. Comeback for same issue was very rare but I will admit we had more issues with electrical/computer/water leak issue comebacks. In 99% percent of those problems we got it right the second time.

    Seems like everybody that I speak to has the same problem. I had a 2014 dodge ram 2500 Cummins heavy duty. I love the truck. Or should I say I loved it. The transmission went. The sad part is I couldn’t get a transmission I wasn’t asking for warranty work because it was after the warranty. I was asking for a new transmission which I would pay for. But dodge couldn’t even get the transmission. The dealer said they couldn’t get the transmission from any of their vendors. Unavailable. I called around to the transmission places they told me the same thing getting the transmission for that truck what is impossible was impossible. Friend of mine who has a towing company bought a brand new flatbed hundred $10,000 $110,000. Pay $5000 extra for an extended warranty and the transmission went. The dealer would not back it up the warranty company was giving him a hard time the transmission company and Dodge we’re all giving him a hard time. He had to get an attorney. It’s sad for six months it sat SAT for six months. Until it was resolved. My only suggestion is this Look for a second GEN used 5.9 Cummins. They’re out there buy it from a private Seller who has all the maintenance records. I would not recommend buying one from a dealer. Because they don’t know the history. Many of them get it off the auction block you just don’t know where it come from. I’ve had many dodges over the years and the success I have is with the second GEN. 2500 or better. With a FASS lift pump and a newer Updated VP 41 Bosch fuel injector you can’t go wrong

      You're right, thing is when something does go wrong, people remember it... particularly those in the "other" camps. Every new vehicle has the potential for problems and luck plays a role. I'm on my third new truck of a particular brand, first one I drove for 12 years, second one 15 years and the third just turned 7 years old this month... all trouble free, needed nothing but gas, tires the occasional battery and of course the usual maintenance. Guess I have been lucky, I'm not gonna mention which brand, because that only brings on the haters, other than it's domestic.

      Your right none are free from defects. Its the amount and rate of defects that matter.

    I just got rid of my 2500, I’ve never had a vehicle with so many recalls and other non recalled issues including the ‘it’s raining in my truck’ trick. Never again.

    Defective part. Looks like an easy fix since the tranny is already torn down. Shouldn't take 3 weeks to get a part. If that batch of parts is defective, Dodge has a big problem with lots of bad transmissions due to one part.

    I was once told that if I took a Dodge engine, Ford rear end and a GM trans, I would have a bullet proof truck that would pull anything.

    Oh lawn tractor ac cab, will it come with heat? I mean I put my snow blower on its cold in the winter to blow the snow off my 2 car driveway thats 2 cars wide and 2 cars deep, no seriously takes me longer to put the snowblower on the tractor then doing my driveway with a 42" wide blower. 3or 4 passes im done.
    2 years ago it was so fun I did 1/2 the street and a negibors driveway or 2.
    It only takes me 45 min to mow my grass.
    Used to take me 2 or 3 hours because my yards full of hills and im not young anymore. I was using a push mower.
    As far as snow, well your in ks im in kcmo so you know we don't get that much snow anyway but I got the blower for 100 bucks it looks new fit my tractor so I couldn't pass it up.
    But I need to build a weight rack for the back of it the blower pretty heavy puts most the weight at the frt of the tractor.
    Ok lets hope they get your truck right.

    A new transmission could have the same defect. At least you know now that problem is fixed.

    I think a lot of people can agree that if manual transmission especially for the heavy duty vehicles is still an option you would not be in the situation right now.

      Well, that is if the person operating the vehicle knows how to properly operate a clutch...this is the largest reason HD trucks don't have manuals anymore, people are plain lazy, and on top of that can't drive them right.

    You should do like I did find something 2010 and below =no def it would be cheaper to put new engine interior outside paint rims I did that with my durumax I updated the inside the display and other stuff made a brand new truck for less than 30 grand

    Older Chevy 454 high output Vortec and have it rebuilt from the ground up and you'll save about $50,000 and you'll be able to haul anything and everything that you want

    I think asking you how you were driving the vehicle is a valid question. You racked up 20k miles on its first year.

    Look at all of the recalls Ford is getting right now today. Even the CEO acknowledged that they have serious quality control issues right now that will take years to correct. You can google that by the way he did admit it so I will say I respect it when they come out and say it. Where I have an issue is when they know there is a defect and do not make it right for the people. Glad they got it fixed:P
