I understand why people disagree, but I think we really need to start thinking of cultural appropriation as taking traditions from a culture to satirize/malign/wrongly portray them, not simply wearing something for fashion.
Agreed! That’s what I was conveying in my post as well. I’m not Egyptian but I’ve worn their clothes when I’ve traveled there. Cultural appropriation is a real thing However I’ve donned Asian garb because my grandmother was Chinese and I grew up with very mixed cultural references. Dreadlocks by themselves aren't cultural appropriation. They were typical in many cultures, including Greek, Polish, Buddhist and Hindu; dreadlocks *with* the marijuana motif is distinctly Rastafarian and much more problematic.

For the dreads talk. It is a look that has been around for hundreds of years. The origins are mixed enough to the world to use as a non offensive hair style for any kinds of people. My god the world is going crazy. Dreads are a hair style and yes it is a hair style most worn by black people but does that make it theirs!? And why is it such a problem when white people are wearing them? And why isn't there a big fuss about black people coloring their hair blond. or having straightened hair. I mean it's oke to me wear your hair the you want to wear it. I don't see it as stealing or taking away of someone's cultural heritage. I see it as a celebration of diversity. Stop making everything so difficult.
Agree. And also braids and dreads are most worn by black people in USA. Where i live it is more used for "brown-mixed" and "white-passing" people. Many recent immigrants from Africa live here, but they do not usually wear these hair styles.. The simple fact of talking about white, brown, black and immigrant people makes me feel uncomfortable, my society is not so segregated and many "colors" and nationalities are usually found in a single family.
Not all these comments being SO pressed that y’all had a quick conversation about braids and Sederginne’s yellowface. People are so uncomfortable hearing others talking about race and cultural appropriation it’s wild.
@Stefan Hendriks lmao sederginne's yellowface is not cultural appreciation. and news flash, racial insensitivity exists across literally almost all countries and cultures. you're using the USA's problems as a shield to avoid thinking critically about the problems in whatever country you live in, and it's tacky. do better.
@Stefan Hendriks you didn't say which part of my comment you were calling appreciation so maybe make your point clear instead of telling me to read better. Also it's hilarious that you say it's a USA problem, now it's a Belgium problem, well what next? Because holidays celebrating blackface still take place in parts of the Netherlands sooooo...
Not all of these white people in the comments PRESSED about people calling out mama’s use of braids. Look-I really like Mamaqueen but when someone steps on your foot it’d be crazy for them to tell you how much it should be hurting. So if you’re not a black person-it’s INSANE to me that people still feel empowered to discard what they are/aren’t allowed to feel hurt/find offensive. Non-black people just don’t get to tell black folks how they should react to something they find racist or anti-black.
My comment on mama Queens braided/dreaded hair: is Chan's natural hair color blonde? Is Darbie's? Actually? Is Alexis's hair naturally that texture? I'll just say I liked Mama's hair.
Agree. Their statement of cultural appropriation is wrong from any point of view. It is not cultural appopiation. First, Mamá look is ganja plus locks, and therefore it is clearly appreciating a non-afroamerican culture. In her instagram, she talk about the important than marihuana is in her spirituality. This combination of locks, ganja and spirituality are part of european-stonner-hippie culture and rastafarian, and both culture took this elements from hibrydization with hindú culture. Hindú sacred men wears locks, smoke ganja ( a hindú Word actually) and are dedicated to spirituality. On the other hand, Ancient European cultures also used locks. On the other other hand, Abby (who is Brazilian and African-descendent) made the wig and gave it to Mamá. What kind of right does an African-American (or worse, an white man speaking for an African-American) have to tell another African-descendent not to share her own culture (manifest destiny?)

alexis' 'can i tell you? no!' will live in my brain forever, tossing around like a tumbleweed in the sonoran desert, not a care in the world.
Thank you guys so much for being so thoughtful and correct about race in drag performance!
1:27 not them mixing up different seasons 😅😅 love you moms

@Stefan Hendriks lol you're just a creepy patriot with an attitude problem, get out of my mentions weirdo
MOO-GLER! EXCUSE ME! ALEXIS P BEVELS, I LOVE YOU!
