Remember. Change any rubber fuel hoses on classic cars. Almost had a fire on my RS2000 due to a perished line from the fuel pump. This bio ethanol in Petrol rots the lines

Same happened to my moonstone 3rd, I was racing a bike down the A696 (newcastle airport) and it burst into flames, it was the 2 inch pipe from the regulator to the fuel rail that had perished and burst, unfortunately i opened the bonnet and the fire really took hold, I was forced to sit and watched it burn crying my eyes out,, when the fire brigade arrived they used a crowbar to rip my dash out to get to the fire, which made me cry more lol

It was interesting listening as I had a Lancia Betta that the clutch cable snapped , but mine went onto the battery and cause it to catch fire . At the time I thought , I bet no one as had that happen but maybe its a common thing to happen. It will be interesting to see after that is rebuilt.
If there was ever a video to make you carry a fire extinguisher or two in your cossie and change and check your fuel connections this is it. Scary.

Could Ethanol in the petrol have contributed to the deterioration of the rubber components?
I had a 3-door same as that 30 years ago, would love to know if still about as I still got some old receipts for it I found. Reg was D964KJE white 3-door. Shows as black on Dvla site but was original white. I bought it salvage and fixed it up and sold as couldn’t get insurance on it.
Sounds like these cosworth should have a fire extinguisher included with the car.
Take the risk depending on the fire of opening the bonnet my mates Subaru caught fire after smashing a hole through the bloke and pissing oil over the turbo etc . Had the dilemma of opening it did it slow was ok so I stood on the slam panel and pissed on it which saved the car .
Roughly how much will this cost to fix?
Its very hard to say , i would put an educated ( or un educated , lol ) , guess at 25k
i think a plumed in fire extinguisher system would be an idea on such cars .

2 major things on a cossie.
1. If 2wd replace the small fuel hose between fuel rail and reg.
Every 3 years using proper fuel. Line clips.
2. Carry a decent fire extinguisher.
good advice , we did change all the fuel lines ( i always do on every resto )

To add i use the lifeline 360 not cheap at £300 but when these cossies are reaching strong money its a small price to pay.
The amount of cars I've seen with jubilee clips on that small fuel pipe is scary along with cheap non fuel injection pipe.
Same goes for the return line.
Very lucky chap tbh could have been worse for sure.

Great shame but just think it will be back, bigger and better and may have a fire extinguisher system this time round ....... I have fire extinguishers in all my 2 cars just in case 🤞🏻 but still heartbreaking 😞👎🏼
If you restored this car then should you have not put some sort off uprated fuel pressure regulator to prevent this?
You could say that about every component Jason , imagine telling a customer you have to replace every item that could possibly fail in the future ? you can only do whats required at the time of the restorations

@@paullinfoot6017 yes I understand what your saying , but if it is a known common fault which you clearly state in the video it is , then you as the car restorer should strongly advice the customer to upgrade that part to a good modern day version as it’s the only part we’re fuel can drip onto the distributor.
@@medievilassassin i can also state , new fuel lines through out , new fuel tank , complete new wiring as this is common to cause fires , new tyres as these could blow out and cause a crash , every bush on the car be replaced , etc etc etc , when i restore a car i can only check the condition of every item as i re fit it , same as an MOT inspector can only check the time of the MOT , any part can fail at any time , unless i replace every single part on every car its impossible to ensure no failures in the future , and remember this was nearly 5 years ago . plus if any fuel line fails it will cause a fire due to the heat under the bonnet , so a regulator is no more risk than any other part of the fuel system . i do however replace all the rubber lines on every resto .

This is terrible, i do hope he gets it back on the road . These old cars do deserve it. Try auto sparks at nottinvham, they're a loom manufactorer. I've had a few for me land rovers, and i'll get one for me jag . Looking forward to when its back on the road. 👍👍👍👍👍
