He's trained in classical and opera. His musical styling is of folk and country with splashes of gospel, spirituals and bluegrass. This sounds like a song you would hear slaves singing while working the fields to inspire the other workers to keep going, or secretly give direction of the Underground railroads, even possibly teaching the gospel as they would have to do all this in code and was usually hidden in song form. He was about to give up aspirations of making it in the music business just as Scott of Pentatonix called him in the formation of the group. He was going to go into music teaching and just doing his own thing for his own happiness. I suggest the song Quater Past Four from his Avril and the Sequoias album from when he just left Pentatonix.
In an interview, I heard him say that this was a sort of declaration that he was going to make the change, to reclaim his "self" in terms of his music. Other than the drum, all the background was layering...Avi.
Avi sang all the background parts, vocals and most of the instruments. His father is Jewish, his mother is a Messianic Jew. He has always had a deep spirituality. His song Otherside is very moving.
Avi grew up close to the Sequoia National Forest. He was an Iron and Wine fan from the beginning. Lots of folk influences. He started writing his own music, and performing in coffee houses when he was 14 or 15. Taught himself to play some instruments. He was only 21 when he joined PTX for the sing off.
For a complete change in direction, check out his version of Hey Ya, under Avriel and the Sequoias. Very much a different vibe, but still very much Avi.
Avi is Jewish. And yes, he did lay down some of the background bassline. He is writing and most like arranging his own music now.He is operatically trained. He was in an all-male a capella group in college. He joined PTX right before they went on The Sing Off on TV, which they won season 3. His lowest note is a G1. Some other songs to check out would be "It knows me, Otherside, Aberdeen Alt Version, Adeline, Part 2, Chains" and more. Have fun listening, Avi is AMAZING and extremely talented. He's free to showcase his voice and talent now.

Avi is Jewish but as he described it when asked about singing Christmas songs he has been in school choirs forever so it doesn't bother him. If Pentatonix had not come up he was studying opera and undoubtedly would be performing in that now. He was in college and won awards in a cappella competitions. I would suggest I'll Get By as a good song to react to or for fun the Hey ya! cover he did.
@@Wilsonspen Unless you can document that I would not say it and his brother Joshua lives in Israel so that other rumor does not make sense either. Avi has never said anything but he is Jewish. What he has said about his experience with some Christians is the following - "Tell me about your Jewish background and education? My family would go to temple; my parents always wanted me to understand my Jewish roots. Growing up in Visalia, California, there weren’t many Jewish people. I identify with my family being Jewish but growing up, it seemed like I was the only Jew around, was the token Jew. I was made fun of for being Jewish. One time in high school on the bus a girl was being really mean to me. I asked her why and she said, “Because you killed Jesus.” I said, “I didn’t personally.” …It was still hurtful. It didn’t happen all the time, but enough where I felt it was really annoying. I’m around way more Jewish people now than I was growing up. Everybody I meet is Jewish now, all the CEOs of companies, managers, agents, producers. Almost our entire team is Jewish. Our tour manager is my sister, our agent, our lawyer, the head of the record label is Jewish. My Jewish education ended with my bar mitzvah. We didn’t go [to synagogue] super often. I’m still very connected with my Jewish roots and celebrate all the holidays as much as I can. I come home for Hanukkah and Passover and Yom Kippur and all that, I try and stay connected. My dad always said “Be proud that you’re Jewish,” and I keep that dear to my heart. One of Pentatonix’s three albums is a Christmas album. (Pentatonix’s “Little Drummer Boy” was the first song to knock Mariah Carey out of first place on the Christmas best sellers list in a dozen years). Was it uncomfortable for you to sing Christmas songs? It didn’t bother me at all. I’ve been singing about Christmas and Jesus, because of all of that in choral music. I love singing Christmas music, no problem at all singing that. Have you heard any of the Jewish a cappella groups? I’ve seen The Maccabeats. I’ve wanted to do a collaboration with them for TH-cam
Religion has nothing to do with SOUL and GOD. This man has both. That voice. That SOUL... he's got a direct connection to the Almighty with his voice... God's voice ...
So far this is my fav song of his! Been listening to him for a long time now! Love his solo stuff! FYI: He is Jewish but was in choirs in college. Not sure what he did when he was a kid as far as singing goes though? :)
This is Old Testament: carrying the ten commandments in front of the jewish children marching knowing that the Jubilee is giing to set the slaves free.
His religious was as a Jew, but his mother and older brother are both Messianic. Not sure if his father is Messianic or follows traditional Judaism. I have seen him, his mother, brother and sister sitting around singing O Holy Night (on video) at his parents house so there is a of christian influence there as well.
Pam where did you hear that? Joshua lives in Israel among other things and Avi has never said anything except he completed his religious training when he was bar mitzvahed which would be somewhere around 15. He learned all the gospel music in music class not as a religion he or members of his family follow at all. Not according to what the man has said himself consistently for years.
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 His mother is Messianic but I will not share how I now that. She is open about it and was raised Messianic. Joshua is also Messianic as I have heard him sing songs in that genera. I have zero idea what Avi believes but Bar Mitzvah is at age 13. It was during Avi's training for his Bar Mitzvah that his Rabbi heard his singing voice for the first time and told Avi he had a really good voice. Avi celebrates Christmas and though I as a Hebrew do not, it is a Christian Holiday which he is apparently comfortable with. I did not know that until I saw the video of his song "I'LL GET BY". There was a Christmas Tree laying out in his yard where he had discarded it and was evident in the video as it was laying outside of his cabin.

True, but his dad is a messianic jew and his mother is christian. They also have strong ties to the Native American community as well. He was raised in this wide mix of religion and culture, including powows, rodeos and spending much of his time listening to Iron and Wine, Sons of the San Juacinne, and Bill Withers.
