My initial reaction on first hearing this song exactly matched yours -- "That's the most masculine thing I ever heard!" I believe this genre is "American Folk" and is Avi's favorite, although he does sing other genres as well. His leaving Pentatonix was unfortunate for them, but a gift for us.
Despite the fact I love Avi and he is amazing, I feel like it was fortunate for everyone, us that now have twice as much awesome music to enjoy, to Avi that gets to do whatever he wants since he is solo, and Pentatonix that kinda found another course to follow and it's been working amazingly for them.
Avi Kaplan is one of my favorite artists. He came out of the A capella group Pentatonix. He was with them for quite some time, but it was too buttoned up for him, and he truly wanted his own vibe and style to shine....and man, does it ever!! To me he is one of the most unique singer songwriters out there because he can change his style so easily, and his range is incredible! I'm moving to northern AZ in two weeks and trying to get him to come to Sedona lol. Hey, it's worth a try, right?😁
Shooter Jennings produced his latest album and talked about how brilliant a vocalist Avi is. He said he has an orchestra in his throat . For that reason many of Avi's songs have a different sound. He is capable of so much its astounding to go through his catalog. I would suggest I'm only Getting Started next.
I had to laugh when you said "I didn't expect the chorus to be so good", or something to that effect. The chorus is Avi -- all the voices on this track (I believe) are Avi. For a basso profundo, he's got a terrific higher register. Would recommend you react to a collaboration between Avi and Peter Hollens called Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair. Some fantastic harmonies in there, and Avi does a riff no human should be able to do...
I appreciate your soft voice with comentary especially on this song because I like to turn it up to hear Avi sing. Some reactors can blow out your eardrums with enthusiasm if you are not careful to turn it down. You are not the first reactor to say this song belongs in a movie soundtrack, I agree.
Excellent reaction. Avi Kaplan (pronounced Ah-Vee) was the original basso profundo for the a' Capella group Pentatonix. This is an original track that has been featured on a couple tv shows. Avi was going through a period of change himself when he wrote this song. It is definitely a fan favorite. I saw Avi in concert a month ago and this song not only gets the crowd joining in, but Avi encourages it. I think it was also timely considering the things our world has been going through. Avi released his first album entitled Floating on a Dream. The genre is generally folk/Americana and reminiscent of the 1970s. Every track is gorgeous. He is an amazing writer and storyteller. I sincerely hope you will react to his new LP. He is at the top of my favorite artists.
No less powerful when he performs it live. Each Avi song is different and unique. I highly recommend you do more Avi reactions. Otherside, All is Well, These Chains.... Pick a song, they're all good!
Most people only knew Avi from PTX and heard little of his vast vocal ability. This song, he wrote it, sings lead and the thundering bass backing, he is also the clapping/snapping in the background. Yes, Shooter Jennings produced it in Nashville, Tennessee where Avi now lives full time. His favorite home is the sequoias of California. Shooter is the son of the late Waylon Jennings. A country/southern rock icon. Avi is a vocal god, he attacks high notes above a baritone down to low bass notes with open warm ease. You don’t get talent like this much in music today, double it with the fact he sounds THE SAME live without any help. It’s outstanding. I love Pentetonix, but I am so glad we have Avi’s solo work to better hear him shine!!!!
Hard to believe this is the same guy doing the bass in Pentatonix covers isn't it? Thank you for listening to Avi. He left PTX because of touring burnout, took a couple of years off and came back with this! A singer-songwriter like Chris Stapleton or Rag N Bone Man in the U.K. Avi Kaplan is hard to put in a genre. I guess in the catch all Americana genre. Country one minute, then blues, then folk, then rock etc. Same thing with his voice - way down low then up higher for a duet with another singer in "All is Well". Started writing and performing music at 13 and he is just one of the good guys doing free livestreams Saturday mornings during quarantine to help everyone feel less alone.
I'm a native Pacific islander. When I first heard this song, I immediately thought of my ancestors, in native garb, wooden spears, ready to do battle. This song connected me so strongly with my ancestor.
Mientras haya masas escuchando a Maluma, Bad Bunny, etc., el gusto por el verdadero talento seguirá degradándose. Muchos buenos poetas y músicos renuncian a la "gloria" para tener la libertad de hacer buen arte Saludos.
Thank you for reacting to Avi, he has an outstanding voice. Another “anthem” of his is “I’m Only Getting Started” that has a very cool video and is on his “Floating On A Dream” album. Apart from one song (a beautiful duet with Joy Williams), the only voice you will hear is Avi’s as he harmonises with himself. It’s an amazing album, the songs are very different from each other but all very, very good.
Yes please listen to this album! It’s just so chill. That’s the only way I know how to explain it. Saw him live w my 13 year old son in Nashville back in May 2022 and it just takes you to another place. You walk outta there with the best feeling! You should FOR SURE check it out!
Kaplan is devout to God. I am a fan. I think this is traditional spiritual; reminds me of the old 'work songs' of the penal system or the railroad layers. Very stunning.
Avi is not religious. He tells of being bullied as a child because of being Jewish. He wrote this song about fighting and overcoming his battles with depression and anxiety.
Imo, Avi is a modern day Johnny Cash. Real, raw, relatable, powerful music. I love the albums, masterpieces. But the alternative tracks and omg live performances are where it's at. I'd love to see a reaction to one of his 7 Layers videos. It's just him and his guitar in an old church with the most amazing acoustics.
Very appropriate for today and what's going on with people of all nations rising up against the pervasive corruption of gvts and shadow gvts! Very strong and powerful as the people are...
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. It’s definitely an anthem-makes you want to rise up and change the world. Avi has such a powerful voice. He’s kind of the bar bass singers all over TH-cam, TikTok, Instagram, etc. set for themselves. Great reaction! Obviously you’ll want to check out more of Avi’s music-you really can’t go wrong with any of it. I see you’ve checked out at least one Voiceplay song-that was going to be one of my suggestions (their bass, Geoff Castellucci, also has a solo channel that’s worth checking). Also, The Bass Gang just released a cover of Bones by Imagine Dragons-you definitely should hear that. Every member of that group is a bass singer, and they all are extraordinary musicians.
True. The inside shots are from his living room which has been seen a couple more times. The exterior from his property. You can see the outside in "I'll Get By".
It does sound like a battle cry with the soul of a Southern (gospel/spiritual) song. Scott's-Irish are predominant in the South. I believe this was filmed in Tennessee. The Scottish & Irish did join together in their fight against the oppressive British, in the movie "Braveheart". This song reminds me of their strong desire for freedom.
I love this. The first time I heard it I was mesmerized. Love the drum heartbeat supporting the vocals and "We're singin' all day and you can't tame us" has to be one of the best lyrics ever. And, of course, that voice. Yum.
Great reaction! Avi's music is so good! My current musical obsession is his recent video of his song I'm Only Getting Started. Play it every morning to pump me up during a recent career change. Highly recommend checking it out. All of his music is amazing. Thanks for reacting to his work!
You can't go wrong with any of his songs. It Knows Me, Chains, Floating on a Dream, Full Moon, Song For the Thankful, I'm Only Getting Started are just some of my favorites. Oh man, how could I forget to mention Aberdeen?? One of my favorites.
Avi is amazing singer, song writer and human being . His new album Floating on a dream is fantastic He don't treat you right . Floating on a dream , Into the blue full moon, It knows me . Really I love all of his music.😀
Loved your reaction to this. I LOVE this song. Whenever I listen to it, I feel like I'm going off to battle it gets me all pumped. You're right about being the most masculine song. I totally agree !
Thank you for reacting to Avi, his solo music is amazing! Not just his voice but the way he writes, the lyrics are so meaningful in every song. Please check out more of his stuff!
I would call Avi spiritual, not church but enlightened. Inspirational to me and he's been thru some stuff that most people I know have too❣️Especially me. I'm ABSOLUTELY loving his lyric writing!!! He's getting Up there in the Deep😁 Poetry💜💨🌊🌲🏡
Hello! Can you give me some reference to read about Kaplan's biography? I'm starting to get to know the music of this excellent artist. Whenever I read a good book or listen to good music, I like to read the biography, to understand his art more deeply. But what I have found from Avi Kaplan are very superficial and vain things that do not reflect the real source of his inspiration.
@@Erika-jl8so I've just gotten segments and pieces over the past couple years. He's EXTREMELY private and of course, people say shallow, and tacky things about artists. But if you listen to his solo lyrics and back story of childhood, you'll find him to be very deep. As for reading bio...? Idk what's published. THANK YOU ❣️ HAVE A 9 wonderful journey.
@@leeannies-tears369 Mmm, 🤔. I understand that his music is a discovery to edify me from inside (in the process I am in) and not to interpret from the author's eyes. You have been very helpful. Thank you very much. 🌳
Love this reaction to Avi! His music is indescribable, and so many people have such powerful connections to his songs. He sings about emotions, and what it's like to have pain and hope simultaneously. I'm a therapist and I use his music with my clients to help them know they aren't alone with what they feel. Some of Avi's other songs similar to Change on the Rise are "Chains," "Get Down," "It Knows Me," and "I'm Only Getting Started." He also has this ethereal side to his music in "Otherside" and "Full Moon." His new album is amazing, I can't pick favorite tracks off of it but "When I'm A Fool" and "I Can't Lie" replay in my head all day.
Yeah been waiting for this. Great reaction. I read the best comment about Avi's music. " He dont make albums he makes soundtracks." Ypu cant go wrong with anything from Avi. I recommend Full Moon. It is hauntingly beautiful or I'm only getting stated from his new album.
While the original "All Is Well" video with co-writer Joy Williams is great, lately I've found myself just watching the 7 Layers Sessions solo one that was filmed in the church in Utrecht, Netherlands during his recent European tour. The incredible smoothness and resonance of his voice is made even more stunning by the acoustics of the church. th-cam.com/video/sNjbAAjF4Tg/w-d-xo.html
It's a war song. No, it's a Viking song. Maybe it's a chain gang ...or a Spiritual. It's pretty awesome, regardless. A call to rise above opposition. Love it.
I’m so happy you loved this! “Otherside” is a great one if you’re looking for something peaceful, it’ll soothe your soul. “Full Moon” is a sleeper hit, it sounds quietly ominous, the layering is incredible
When i first heard Otherside 3 years ago I was at a complete loss for words....how can you describe something so perfect...something so soothing....so cathartic....so pure....something that touches the deepest darkest corners of your soul and calls to the very essence of your being....something so spiritual....magical....earthy....calming....chilling....no.....there simply are no words.
Great reaction to Avi’s solo work! He has nearly 30 original releases to choose from for your next reaction. “Change” was his “comeback” release 2yrs after leaving PTX. From his earlier work, check out Hey Ya (Outkast cover), and originals Quarter Past Four, Aberdeen, and Otherside for their cinematography, vocals and lyrics. First Place I Go, I’m Only Getting Started, He Don’t Love you Right and Floating on a Dream are my faves from the new album, but all are excellent. For another “manly” song and loads of bass, check out “Chains” (audio only, but here’s a live version: th-cam.com/video/_Ki0WeSRxvE/w-d-xo.html ) Subbing for more Avi! 🥰🔥
This song is GREAT, in 2020 “Change on the Rise” is the featured theme song for a brand-new documentary podcast series called, Relative Unknown. A real-life tale of murder, mayhem, crime and family secrets.
Such a great and impressive song, so beautifully sung. I'm so glad Avi left PTX. Because even though he was already my favorite with PTX, it was only as a solo singer that he could really show how great he is. Such a unique voice, such recognizable beautiful music, such touching lyrics etc. As a solo singer he is really my favorite. No one can sing this like he does this.
It is a shame PTX did not show case his voice more. He has an amazing bass voice pluse all their voices completely complemented each other. You have to allow each member to use their creativity. This is one reason Queen was so successful and without a break-up. Also each had a top song that they wrote. People learn from the group " Queen."
So glad to see someone reacting to Avi's stuff now. Others have said it but I will also encourage that if you liked this, you'll love "I'm only getting started" and then the rest of the album those songs are on. But also, I'd suggest checking out videos that showcase his range cuz that man hits some of the lowest bass tones I've ever heard out a humans' mouth! I'm sure there's a handful of others who may even get lower but Avi's bass hits hard and low but his range after that is what's so damn surprising and pleasing.
POLO: do you know that "polo" means "chicken" in Italian? You seem pretty bold...maybe you need a mighty nickname!? you know what I don't understand? I never hear Avi"s music on the radio! If anyone deserves to be on the radio, AVI does. He is a great artist, one of the greatest in the world. thanks for this react, Polo.
Missed it. Defined as masculine only if your mind, eyes, heart is looking at whats down. Lifting up those: Clearly it's a battle cry (anthem) as what it really is- IS The Inner Of The Soul Declaring Coming Out Of It and Here It Comes Power BY THE LIGHT OF GOD, inclusive and declared for all spirits, not just man./ Many of his songs are of the struggle/fight/devotion (good and bad) we experience, Avi exemplifies, when honest with ourselves. I'm ready for it.
Dude you picked a perfect intro to Avi. That song is powerful. His range is amazing too. Also, I have that same shirt you’re wearing and had it on yesterday 🤣
I genuinely agree with you and enjoy your reactions to music at least what I've seen so far I think you'd enjoy Hell's coming with me by poor mans poison
Now that you have connected Avi Kaplin with Pentatonix, I would like to suggest a path you might want to check out. Avi is featured with another acapella group called Home Free in a cover of a Johnny Cash song "Ring of Fire." This will introduce you to another fantastic bass singer, Tim Foust, and the beatboxer, Adam Rupp. There are two tenors, Austin Brown and Rob Lundquist. The baritone, Chris Rupp was in this song, later replaced by Adam Chance. After Ring of Fire, if you don't mind a certain order that will really show you the talent of Home Free: 1. Home Free: Brothers in Arms (bass that has to be heard. This is a Dire Straits cover) 2. Home Free: Man of Constant Sorrow (the song was published in 1913 and first recorded in 1928. It has been covered many times. You might recognize it from the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?") 3. Home Free: Drum Solo (because you need to see that the beatboxer is real from #2 and #3) 4. Home Free: Mayday (this shows the 5-octave range that Tim Foust has and also how Adam Chance can easily go from baritone to bass) 5. Peter Hollens ft. Tim Foust: Misty Mountains (again, the bass...) 6. Home Free: Blue Ain't Your Color (just for grins)
Interesting comment. It’s actually one of the things I love about Avi - all of his music isn’t cookie cutter, but have you heard “I’m Only Getting Started”? Definitely a similar genre/style. More like a “part 2” to CotR, though.
I love everything Avi does. If they all sounded like this one it would get a little boring. I love the variety he offers. All are amazing with a voice like that how can he go wrong.
You mentioned you had not heard of any acapella group before Pentatonix other than Boyz to Men. Try listening to a group called Home Free doing their version of End of the Road by Boyz to Men or When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge
Given the political and societal drama that's going on right now, this seems like the perfect song. Change is a-coming. The people are rising to fight against a corrupt system

Great reaction! Avi is amazing and any track you pick will be awesome. All is well is fantastic, along with h It Knows Me, Otherside...all good ones!
@@charlottevan_8 Yes! I found the 7 layer sessions too and they are a whole new level of amazing.
Just seen him in concert! Was a smaller venue! It was awesome! I like floating on a dream, the whole album is good. Or should I say disc. Lol
Listen closely and you realize that all the voices, including that background beat and bass growl is HIM.
@@NiMari.Me pasa lo mismo. Tengo apenas 2 semanas de escuchar sus canciones y hace vibrar las fibras más profundas.
Saludos ,🌳
Great reaction to Avi’s solo work! He has nearly 30 original releases to choose from for your next reaction. “Change” was his “comeback” release 2yrs after leaving PTX. From his earlier work, check out Hey Ya (Outkast cover), and originals Quarter Past Four, Aberdeen, and Otherside for their cinematography, vocals and lyrics. First Place I Go, I’m Only Getting Started, He Don’t Love you Right and Floating on a Dream are my faves from the new album, but all are excellent.
For another “manly” song and loads of bass, check out “Chains” (audio only, but here’s a live version: th-cam.com/video/_Ki0WeSRxvE/w-d-xo.html )
Subbing for more Avi! 🥰🔥
Chains is another good Avi song.
This song is GREAT, in 2020 “Change on the Rise” is the featured theme song for a brand-new documentary podcast series called, Relative Unknown. A real-life tale of murder, mayhem, crime and family secrets.
It is also in the quirky series Resident Alien.
I don’t know exactly how he does it, but Avi can sing two notes at one time. Saw him do it in a video taken at a Pentatonix concert.
Your voice is so soothing 🥺 I would love to hear an audio book or other narrative style works in your voice 😮
I believe he did all the backing vocals for this song as well it’s absolutely amazing
I recommend “I’m Only Getting Started “ and “ Chains” by Avi Kaplan. His music is considered alternative Folk.
Thanks, Polo! I love this video & song!
It is a shame PTX did not show case his voice more. He has an amazing bass voice pluse all their voices completely complemented each other. You have to allow each member to use their creativity. This is one reason Queen was so successful and without a break-up. Also each had a top song that they wrote. People learn from the group
" Queen."
Has a definite gospel feel to me, but elements of folk...I like
If you liked this one, you've got to react to "I'm Only Getting Started." More powerful lyrics and vocals!
Polo, you should do a react about a singer called, Brandon Lake.
That song always makes me wanna pick up 2 axes and send my enemies to Valhalla.
I love him. And i realised how much talent he has when i stop following Pentatonix after he left them
❤️
Otherside is my favorite
quarter past four and ill get by are two of his best in my opinion. :)
another reactor found the word i could not find, the song is primal, hits one deep in our soul. i.m.o.
Had the same reaction first time I heard it. I pictured it in an episode of Vikings, Walking Dead or Sons of Anarchy. lol
After Ring of Fire, if you don't mind a certain order that will really show you the talent of Home Free:
1. Home Free: Brothers in Arms (bass that has to be heard. This is a Dire Straits cover)
2. Home Free: Man of Constant Sorrow (the song was published in 1913 and first recorded in 1928. It has been covered many times. You might recognize it from the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?")
3. Home Free: Drum Solo (because you need to see that the beatboxer is real from #2 and #3)
4. Home Free: Mayday (this shows the 5-octave range that Tim Foust has and also how Adam Chance can easily go from baritone to bass)
5. Peter Hollens ft. Tim Foust: Misty Mountains (again, the bass...)
6. Home Free: Blue Ain't Your Color (just for grins)
Wow.
He was with pentatonix
PS similar to: Old Man River, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen etc
It's sort of amazing how all the rest of the songs he does do not compare at all to this style.
Welcome to the club. Lol!
I actually appreciate this song without seeing Avi to distract me…😊 I am a weak vessel!
Can you react to When I'm a Fool by Avi Kaplan?
The live version from Sunset Sound Studios is my favorite
Given the political and societal drama that's going on right now, this seems like the perfect song. Change is a-coming. The people are rising to fight against a corrupt system
I swear I thought you said he had a “very white” kinda voice lollll! Hilarious!! Great reaction! Great choice! Can’t go wrong w Avi!
