When SR-71 Flew So Fast That F-15 Eagle's Radar Couldn't See It In 1980s

  • In the 1980s, to give the US Navy's F-14 Tomcats, and the US Air Force's F-15 Eagles practice locating, following, locking on, intercepting, and simulating the firing of the F-14's and F-15's sophisticated Aim-54 Phoenix and Aim-7 Sparrow missiles at a high altitude, high speed target, the SR-71 Blackbird flew "Tomcat Chase" and "Eagle Bait" sorties with them. The intercepts were done in an extremely regulated environment, which enabled the fighter jets to succeed. American fighter pilots were only capable of securing a lock on the SR-71 after the Blackbird crew switched off its protective countermeasures. Even under these carefully regulated flight conditions, the SR-71 was moving so fast that the F-14s and F-15s had severe difficulty achieving an effective SR-71 kill. Unless the SR-71 was damaged, it was nearly impossible to get a lock on it. A speed barrier at 1500 knots was visible on the F-15 Eagle's radar, while the SR-71 was comfortably cruising between 1850 and 2000 knots, thus, the Blackbird was literally nonexistent for the F-15 Eagles.

      Missiles can achieve the speed to attack SR-71. USSR's radar has seen SR-71 many times. SR-71 faced with risks of being attacked and never entered USSR's airspace. China entered US's airspace with very slow balloons and US didn't notice until 2023. I really don't think speed is that important.

    The main limiting factor to the Blackbird’s top speed is the amount of heat it can withstand. Talking to some of the SR pilots I encountered over the years, the top speed was much higher than Mach 3. If you think about the Atlantic crossing speed record, that plane has to slow down and get fuel from a tanker and still managed around 2200 Mph average speed. That’s Mach 3 + including the fuel stops.

    The F-15 squadron I was in while stationed at Nellis AFB, NV did some of these intercepts. The pilots said that unless you knew where the SR-71's were coming from you had no chance and that they moved so fast they were just a blur through the sky. Two interesting things is that the pilots also said that the SR's top speed is much higher than advertised. The other is that they did these intercepts at about 80,000 feet. The F-15's advertised ceiling is only 60,000 feet.

    • @TheAttacker732
      @TheAttacker732 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Intercepts can be accomplished above maximum service altitude, particularly with an aircraft with as high of a thrust/weight ratio as the F15.
      The service ceiling is generally "this is the altitude that the aircraft can still properly operate at", not "this is the absolute highest altitude that the aircraft can reach". Something like an F15 could start at (say) 45,000', and start a hard afterburner climb to intercept, letting momentum take them to the required altitude as they start to lose thrust.

    The SR-71 was commissioned in the same year I was born. I’ve heard about this mythical aircraft all my life. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it’s incredible futuristic silhouette as a child in the early 70s. It’s so unlike any craft of any description. The 60s and 70s was a special time in the design of vehicles to break speed and endurance records. From WSC 24H prototype sports cars, to power boats, to military aircraft. It was a great time to be a day dreaming kid, and being wowed by all these amazing machines. Especially whilst growing up in a dirt poor neighbourhood and had nothing but fantasy and dreams to take the edge of the unforgiving savagery of everyday life 🙏🏽

      Its sustained speed vs a missiles sprint speed. the SR-71 would defeat the missile by defeating its energy. a slight turn at the blackbirds altitude is miles difference from down below im talking a few degrees difference in turning.
      If the missile was shot at the same/close altitude it would more than likely intercept but being 10,000's of feet off it becomes less and less likely

    Lockheed promised that an SR72 would be at least twice as fast as SR71. To achieve that it will need either four engines or two combined cycle turbofan/scramjet engines. At Mach 6+, stealthy, it will have to fly at very high altitude, possibley 100,000 feet or more to avoid overheating the skin, and will likely be a drone since it could be capable of acceleration that would kill a human pilot. In additions to reconnaissance is should contain an arsenal of weapons including directed energy weapons therefore probably being large except on radar where it should be virtually invisible. Given on board AI control it should be able to evade any defensive system that can even detect it.
