I get what you’re saying but there’s not one way to go about getting a deal. If you believe it takes 100’s of songs to get there, then it will. The other side of the coin is if you believe you’ve written a hit with just a handful of songs written, that can be possible too. The key component is relationships and who you know. I’ve seen it happen when you build a relationship and someone gets favored over another. Once you feel you have a strong song that can resonate and you have the right relationship that has the connections and you have a knowing that your songs are great and get great feedback, anything is possible. Nurture those relationships, so imperative in the entertainment industry. And eventually, it will happen. But the second you think it’s a pipe dream, you lost all momentum and it won’t happen.

Relationships!!! Yes!! I’m seeing that more & more in every area of life.

If he wrote 200 songs before 1 got published, it just means 199 either "sucked" or "weren't good enough". That's just the reality.
If you're excellent, then every song you write is a hit. It's just whether or not the right Artist exists for it.

Thanks for the "real-ville" message about publishing songs. I feel as if a lot of people get messed up with trying to be successful in songwriting, don't know how much work it is going to take, and lose their love for songwriting. If NOTHING happens with any song I have ever written, I don't want to lose the joy of songwriting. But I guess I am not trying to make a living off of it either - LOL!

Love that, Brian! Don't let it take the joy out of it for you!!

With all the competition of getting a publishers attention and the politics involved, I have heard that so many artists are self publishing their music as an alternative. Your thought or did I hear wrong.

I’ve heard that, too!!! I’d like to master self publishing myself but then you still have to find well known artists willing to listen to and then perform them. No matter what angle you use, there’s much time & diligence to it and plain old hard work. If you love it, it’s worth it!!!🙌🏾

but where do i find the publishing deal companies?

I totally understand that you need to write tons of songs, practice your craft, etc.. but I also know you have to have people listen to these songs too. As a non performing songwriter I feel a little lost. Pitching songs to artists seems impossible on my own. And even when I reach out to a more indie artist, they don't care to co-write unless I proclaim myself as a producer. Any suggestions?

Hi Doug! Try re-locating to a music driven city such as Nashville, New York, DC, or LA. You will be able to find more people to pitch your songs to.

@@OfficialFCMusic I actually believe it's because I live in LA that hurts me. Planning on moving to Nashville where more musical types are open. It seems like LA is more "production" driven than "songwriting" driven.

If I don't like what I write, I toss it out. There's only few that remain.
Sounds like the industry is like a lottery.

Exactly. It’s not a numbers game but it IS a numbers game

So, really? I have to write a crap-ton of songs? For someone to half way promote me and then take almost all of the profit from these songs. Not really thrilled about that.

In a good publishing deal is NOT going to take most of the profits from your songs. In a Co pub deal, which are given to writers with some track record, the writer still makes effectively 75% of all of the royalties. Hope this helps. Seth

This video is 100 percent worthless. Doesn't teach you how to reach out to the right people.
