The Speed Limit is 30 MPH you won't get into too much trouble at that speed. Doubling that speed can be a challenge. It's hard to make a fast run with out getting stuck behind Harley Riders that are too rude to pull off. Though 60% of them will pull off 40% think they own the road and are "ROAD HOGS ON THERI ROAD COUCHES"

I think the best thing that any rider can do to prepare for the TOTD is to realize, it isn't a track, it is a public roadway, there are no hay bales or arresting devices to stop a motorcycle or rider. I work in aviation and have talked with EMS operators in the region, there is a considerable issue in getting EMS help on the Tail, it is away from everything and usually ground services are needed to get a rider to an aircraft if a care flight is required. There is no ambulance on standby, there are no flaggers on standby to direct traffic. You can't count on anyone respecting another driver/rider whether they are on a bike, car, or a semi. It is a beautiful area, the ride is amazing, this area is the most motorcycle friendly area I have ridden in the country. But, you can't get away from the tourists in the motor coach or the idiots that have no respect for others no matter what they are riding or driving.

I have done about two dozen trips to the Tail, riding it multiple times each day. I have also driven it several times. Whether on a bike or in a car, target fixation is normally the cause of a crash, so look where you want to go. Something specific to the Tail, though, is ride it / drive it earlier in the morning. Even on the weekends you can usually get a few passes in early before the crowds start to stir. When it gets busy (usually by 10:am), head to the Cherohala Skyway for a more relaxed ride.

I think the real cause or danger of the dragon is the banking in the corners. Most riders are used to a flat curve. There are all banked corners, they are not a unicorn but most riders don't think about the banking of the road in normal riding scenarios. Then you go the the dragon and every corner has banking that helps you get around those tight corners and the switchbacks. It gives a false confidence but there are so many corners where the banking goes from one corner into the next which means if you are off line and step over the bank angle where the road goes away from you it will send the rider off the road at speed. It's a double edge sword. Especially four riders as yourself as you describe your riding cornering experience at the 5:00 mark.

I've ridden the TOD several times. On the weekends is the worst in my opinion. That is unless it's later in the day, as most people are headed back to their cabin or hotel or maybe to dinner. Sat after 4pm it's not as busy.
I've never ridden alone & have usually ridden it in both directions each time I've ridden it.
I like to ride all the curvy roads back home before I head down to TOD. I feel it makes for great training for both how I & how my bike performs in the corners.

Riding at a speed safe for the conditions will normally provide the safest possible outcome! It doesn't matter how good of a rider or how skilled, there could always be a Cage driver on the other side of the curve in your lane. the tail won't be closed because it's one of only a couple "local" roads that tie NC and TN together without having to go all the way up or down by hours around the mountains. It's a vital road actually especially right now with all the mess going on just north of there. I ride it a few times every year just depends on how i feel and whether or not I feel like dealing with the traffic. As for the road this year the dt is at 11 so far and hopefully won't go up anymore but never know. As far as riding it though those of us that are "locals" to it keep trying to explain to others that the tail isn't where you want to have a issue for not just the amount of time it will take for emergency workers to get to you as well as you mentioned the bears and other animals are out. I know a few of the fire rescue guys that work that section of road and its easily minimum 40mins before they can get to you. So golden hr if you're injuries are life threatening is already used up before they get to you. If you're life flighted out to knoxville that's another 15-20 mins flight once they get you on the chopper. As far as being prepared well always go across the first time very easy so you can see what the road conditions are like as well as how traffic is. Nothing like having someone completely in your lane as you come around the corner. It happens a lot. One thing I do when I ride it is try to stay as much as possible to the white line side of the lane so less likely of a issue. As for the weather comment yes during the summertime especially its very common for thunderstorms or showers to just pop up and vanish daily.

First of all, my condolences to the family of the motorcycle rider who lost his life.
I am a retired police motorcycle officer with a traffic collision investigation background.
Unfortunately and especially with motorcycle collisions that I have investigated, speed has been the primary collision factor in a majority of the cases. In an area like the Tail of the Dragon, if there is a posted speed limit, it is for that reason; it’s dangerous. People just need to slow it down and enjoy the ride for what it is. I plan to take a ride on the Tail of the Dragon on my motorcycle with my wife on the back. I know that I’ll probably be approached by somebody wanting to pass, and that’s OK, they’ll just have to wait until I find an outlet in which they can do so. Otherwise, ride with safety in mind and keep the shiny side up.

  • @MyTruckstop
    @MyTruckstop หลายเดือนก่อน

My point on this road is not the curves but the undulations as in switchbacks that gain massive elevations changes up and down that gets me. My wife and I on a past road trip two up in the dark while it was raining but kept the speed in check with no concerns, I did ride it two years ago and had a heat episode while riding it but that was after a 350 mile day getting there with even drinking plenty of water the whole day or I thought. The Devil's Triangle is tougher to me, maybe not as continuously intense but when there is a switchback and the white line is washed out with no guard rails it raises the pucker factor. In 1985, my first cross country trip, I was heading up to Redding CA on a mountain road, Scrapping pegs etc, then I thought if I go off the road on one of these cliffs no one will ever find me so I did slow down and enjoyed the mountain scenery. Anyway, yes, having riding buddies is a good thing for everyone to watch out for another and have an understanding no one is pushing anyone or holding anyone up. Put the ego in the saddle bag.

I've been on the Dragoon several times. Loved the ride . The DUMEST thing I seen there was a bunch of bicycle riders on a busy weekend. Not only are there motorcycles but street rods and I followed a semi on the Dragoon

I was in west Virginia on those state roads and you couldn't get me to drive the speed limit. Those roads are terrifying for a flatlander. I was going up gauly mountain at that hairpin curve with a coal truck coming down and I swore that I was going to die there.

Well, you know... Maybe if you're a single-dad with two young kids at home, maybe don't go up to the Tail on your **NINJA** sportbike and have a fatal accident. How 'bout da. Maybe that could've been one of your points, Hegshot. Oh, I know, I know...nobody plans on having an accident - and that's what it was, "just an random, tragic accident!" Let's get real. Heg, you did not mention in your video about observing the speed limit on the road. Let's admit that people use that road to "test their skillz!" and see how fast they can go around those 300-some-odd corners. Why ELSE would you go up there on a sportbike? I guess I'm getting old - I just like to ride on a curvy road and enjoy the scenery. I've lost all desire to see how far I can get my bike leaned over and scrape the pegs. I guess I'm not an adrenaline junkie anymore. I would love to ride the Tail, and I will do it someday, but I'm going to be one of those rolling roadblocks that the sport riders hate (yes, even the guys on baggers who shouldn't be engaging in those shenanigans in the first place) because I ride like an old man who doesn't feel the need to prove he's a racer anymore. Other than that, great video!

    Good advice...
First... You cannot close that road. It is a very important road. For people who live and work in that area.
How about sports car clubs and extreme speed riders find another place.... Like a track...a closed circuit is where really pushing the limits, drifting, etc... should take place.
    Advice for riders....
Going 75-85% of your skill set, is a good idea. We need to leave some wiggle-room, we don't know what just happened in the road in front of us; or, if someone in the oncoming lane has exceeded their skills, or lost a tire, someone wrecked, etc...
I have been on that road once, driving a van full of rafts and rafting equipment. Very curvy with many elevation changes, often in the curves. There is a lot more to that road than just "The Tail"... I know it would be more fun on a motorcycle, though.
I live in Southern WV.... We are blessed with a lot of curvy backwoods roads. I will likely ride Deal's at some point, on my bike; but, there are so many roads around here, yet ridden (others I ride a lot).... So, I am not in that big a hurry... Plus, RT 16A from Tazewell to Marion, VA is on the way.... So...
When you deliver that Indian Scout to me (🙏)... I will show you a couple.. ;-)
    Peace...

The Tail of the Dragon is nice and a MUST do for riders but the Back of the Dragon is nicer and more scenic. Both rides can be done in 1 trip as they are not so far from each other

@@musicmaestro88 I agree. For bikers there are two ways to approach this road and others like it. Either for comfortable enjoyment or for aggressive thrills. Take your pick. I’m not going to put down a biker whatever camp he finds himself in. My point is if you are going to be aggressive then this video provides good advice. If you want to ride an interesting road, just ride the road without fear of disaster around the next curve.
