The Warn-on-Forecast Group at the National Severe Storms Laboratory shared insights from six years of experimental real-time testing, and hosted a question and answer session to help forecasters become acquainted with the Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS). WoFS grew from a desire to harness rapidly improving storm-scale ensemble modeling in “watch-to-warning” operations. WoFS is groundbreaking in its use of rapid data assimilation, user-informed visualizations, and a design centered around probabilistic prediction of individual thunderstorms. Researchers Patrick Burke and Patrick Skinner provided a tour of the WoFS interface, reviewed known strengths and weaknesses, and showed examples of real-time use by national centers and local Weather Forecast Offices.
