This video presents radar imagery and an animation of the full life-cycle of the Moore supercell and EF5 tornado that occurred on May 20, 2013. The radar imagery shows key features of tornadogenesis associated with the Moore tornado. It explains the processes involved in the initial tornado development, and then reveals reasons for major fluctuations of intensity during its life-time
The animation begins 90 minutes before the tornado. The view is looking north-northwest from a helicopter at 15,000 feet. As the Moore supercell develops, the view point gradually shifts toward the west. First, the flanking line and mesocyclone organize. Then, the first cell merger occurs. This, combined with the influence of an approaching low to mid-level jet, causes the rear flank downdraft to surge. From the cell merger, the first descending reflectivity core forms. This feature reaches the ground and hits the strengthening circulation. When this happens, the tornado immediately forms and develops from the surface upward.
As the tornado strengthens, a second set of cells approach from the southwest. When these cells merge with the Moore supercell, the second descending reflectivity core forms. This feature approaches and wraps around the tornadic mesocyclone, causing a rapid expansion of the rotation. After this, the meso snaps back and rapidly shrinks, coinciding with the first EF5 damage. The tornado alternates between EF4 and EF5 intensity, and then the low to mid-level jet passes. When this happens, the tornado jogs left, then right, and decreases in size. Soon the tornado begins to weaken and a final rear flank downdraft surge overtakes the tornado causing it to dissipate. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

I would love to have more long form videos of NSSL, SPC, NWS, and/or NHC scientists and forecasters sharing their research like this. I got my degree in Meteorology and miss being involved in the community. These videos are great, please keep it up!

thank for taking the time to do this presentation, i love learning about supercells, tornadogenesis and all things weather. I took a few notes to brush up on, descending reflectivity core, and the 3 subdivisions of the mesoscale. It is fascinating to me how you can tell the rfd boundary vortices, and nice work on the animation. Thank you so much for the hard and long hours it took to make everything.

21:40 classic explanation of conservation of angular momentum, with an ice skater putting their arms out and then pulling them in to rotate faster.
Tornadoes are all about containment, to hold the winds in the circulation. It makes sense that the merger of storms would provide a ‘wall’ along with rotation that encourages tornado formation.

This is pretty much how all of the upper tier tornados develop. This was more of a general look into these storm I am guessing.

We had a metereology club back in high school and I thought it might be interesting and the things I learned then have become valuable knowledge today and has helped me really understand what I'm looking at when a possible rotation is reported with a storm and has been pretty valuable in the past few years here in middle Tennessee. Basic understanding of doppler radar images and learning the signs of broad rotation, tightening rotation, signs of a debris signature etc. because it might cut down on some peoples tendency to sit out a tornado warning which is never ok but know if its certain a dangerous tornado is heading there way, or at least see the signs of that possibility.

3:11 reminds me a lot of hurricane sandy. Obviously completely different weather systems, but it’s really interesting how they both intensified by merging* with another storm.
*merging probably isn’t the right word, but it’s the best I can do at this point
Very cool! I got recommended this after re-watching Skip Talbot's life cycle video. I am guessing you are using "WES-2 Bridge" to put older radar into GR2A, or something similar. Kinda want to try it as well

Hi, extremely well done and informative. What do you think of Leigh Orf's explanation though, which has a different emphasis. He says that it is the horizontal vorticity entrained by the inflow channel that is, essentially, tilted into vertical vorticity in the updraft, thus being the main factor in tornadogenesis, with the RFD apparently serving as part of a confining boundary to guide this vorticity upward and vertical.
You see, colleague, in Orf's they have one basic funding trough because of which they do not want to see the OBVIOUS and INCREDIBLE at the same time...

...would saying that the EF5 portion begins is when all the rotation of the DRC cells arrives and is aggregated into one relatively coherent systen of vorticies be a reasonable summary of one of the major points?

Listening to this guy talk was hard to do. He just didn’t sound prepared. Kept bouncing back and forth on words and made it harder to understand and interpret at times
