  • To clean or not to clean, that is the question. I clean the cabin filter in my cars, keeps the air moving more efficiently, thus slow fan speeds, thus a quieter ride. Nice!

A few years ago I wanted to clean my cabin air filter, since there was a weird odour every time I turned on the fan. Upon yanking the filter out, something fell on the floor - looked like a balled up paper towel. When I got closer, I realized it was a dead rodent (either a large mouse, or a small rat). Yikes! So yes, I definitely understand the importance of cleaning your air filter regularly ;-)

Yikes. Just before I made this video I pulled out a big hunk of stuff out from behind the filter. It looked like something had tried to build a nest in there, big mix of cottony stuff and grass, which was not there when I last cleaned the filter in June. Needless to say, I was not impressed!

Cabin air filter is cheap for my car so I just have it replaced with every oil change. No big thing for me.

Filters are cheap, $20-40 depending on the vehicle, but I don't put on enough km/year to justify buying one t every year. One oil change a year is good for my driving needs, which is why I vacuum the filter in between. Each persons driving needs are different, so results will vary. Thanks for watching.

I do roughly 23500 km/year and have oil changed every spring and fall. Total service with oil and filters and the lot, including a full check of the car is 130$. Saves me from having to bother with checking it my self, although I do know a little about cars I prefer a mechanic checks it for me. Tiny hose leaks and rubber seals I don't know which to check other than everything so I could spend a full day doing it. Over all with whats found before it goes major I think I save money and time. Also I have a free loaner while its at the shop.

Beyondact I do something similar, since my driveway is not a good place for working on a vehicle (sloped). Could change my oil, and other basic stuff, but I have the pros do the work, since they will check and see other issues that I would not. Costs $50-150 a year for peace of mind.
That said when it comes to the cabin air filter, most shops I've been to charge $50-60, on top of other fees, to check and change it, which is total rip off. Not something I'm willing to do, when I can clean it for free, or change it if needed for $ 25.

Sounds like its their money maker. Most businesses have lots and lots of things they make nothing on, and then something agreed in that line of work to just bleed people dry on. My mechanic luckily doesn't that I know of, but yeah if I went to Ford or one of the brand garages I know service alone is 40% more at least. I just looked up the cabin air filter and its 16$ alone so with ~4L oil, oil filter, complete checkup and everything I don't think hes giving me a bad deal. He does know hes got it every 6 months so he can bleed me slowly :)

Beyondact yeah but when you own an Audi like me and have to pay $55 for one you rather clean it lol i used compressed air and febreeze it works like a charm.
