  • NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #54: NORTH KILLINGHOLME
Welcome to the Killingholmes - two separate villages on the Southern bank of the Humber Estuary, just to the Northwest of Grimsby. This is North Killingholme, the smaller of the two
The name Killingholme is a Swedish word, and translates into English as “Goat kid islet”. There are numerous settlements with the name Killingholme or Killingholmen in Sweden, as well as in Finland
The Southern bank of the Humber is extremely industrialised, covering an area that stretches all the way to Grimsby. Approximately 50% of the land area in North Killingholme is industrial
The biggest and most striking landmarks in the industrial area would be a pair of oil refineries, which dominate the skyline above the Killingholmes. In this episode we’ll get to see one of them
As well as that, North Killingholme parish extends to the Humber’s foreshore and includes North Killingholme Haven, which is where you’ll find the Humber Sea Terminal
As a village, North KIllingholme is small compared to its much larger neighbour - South Killingholme - although arguably it has more historical features including a moated site near Manor Farm
It also has the one and only Anglican church in the Killingholme villages, and to the West there’s a former RAF base which housed number 550 squadron during WWII.
It was raining heavily, but I didn’t let that dampen my spirits! Lets go!

One VERY important fact you missed out on about North Killingholme Haven, that was the buiding and launching site of that little ship called the MAYFLOWER, you that one that sailed to the New World/USA with the Pilgrim Fathers. There used to be a Blue Plaque near the bridge over the Haven outlet into the River Humber, so I am not sure if you missed that or was not aware of it?
