Cheers Mark. My ancestors came from Grimsby (working around the docks) so it was interesting to research this one.

Think it was first wrecked by the Germans in 1943.

The once great fishing capital of the world... and then the Common Fisheries Policy happened.

I've never been to Grimsby, but I've seen the Dock Tower from the other side of the River Humber, at Spurn Point :)

I can rember cycling from Grimsby via the Paddle Steamer ferry over to Hull and onwards to Spurn Point and back again in 1965 ish as an 8 yr old with my family.

If only we could do that physically, the world in the past was such a better place in so many ways

One of those 2 boys in the 1944 Victoria Street photo could well be my father. He was 10 years old then and born and raised on Orwell Street.

They have wrecked Grimsby by making the town centre a pedestrianised zone and by getting rid of some of the railway like this has been done in the rest of the country.
It would be good if the railways could be restored or improved.

I lived in Cleethorpes from 1968 to 1975. Edward Heath was so keen to join the ‘Common Market’ that he sold us all down the river ! Gave away our fishing rights to that lot and so ruined communities ! Dreadful

Just another example of how to ruin a thriving British industry and let Europe take all the spoils
