Oh I am so sorry about the loss of Lady. Pets are like family, and it so hard when they’re gone. Especially when its sudden. Prayers are with you in your time of grief..
Thank you. Its been a tough few weeks but we are getting through it with both tears and laughter. Hardest bit is editing all the footage we have with them big brown eyes and soppy face. Sail Safe. Ant & Cid xx
Thank you Michael. Not sure if you have seen our other top tips in other videos but we do try to share as many as we can. Thank you for watching. Sail Safe, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Thank you for the great videos and glad you are both ok. So sorry to hear about you losing Lady, but so glad your vets managed to save Oscar and I hope the 3 of you can remember Lady as you wish to. Fair winds and big hugs 😢
Thank you Gary. We are just preparing to leave in the morning if the weather holds(it may not) It will be good to get some sea miles in. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Yep. Another great video. I use a suction pump to sux it up dip stick tube but always worry what's left behind. Will now put some clean oil in and then empty again. Great tips!
David thank you for watching. Glad you like the top tips. Make all the difference when folks comment and we get something back. Sail safe. Next video in the edit now and soon to be uploaded for Patreon's and on YT a week later. We actually get to start doing some sailing, and saying some goodbyes. Best regards. Ant
Thank you Norman. It's been really hard as we had lots of footage with Lady in. We just could not edit it. However, Oscar is running on all 8! Every day he gets better and was running around on the beach this morning, digging holes, chasing sticks and stones. He's benefiting from more attention and we are trying to coordinate walks with our buddy boat where he has a k9 friend Saffy. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Hi Ant & Cindy, I’m sorry for your loss, I know how it feels when you lose a much loved pet. Your videos are fantastic my wife and I are novice sailors and are looking to buy our first boat,,, thanks to you two we have decided on a Bavaria 37. Keep up the good work
Hi guys you know how we feel about the pouches, we will miss Lady so much but as you have said she had a great few extra years on this adventure and now Ozzie is on the mend there is still time for a fun summer xx
Glad to see Oscar pulled through. Sad to hear about Lady though. We are owners of an 18 year old with dogzheimers and feel your pain. Actually I had an injury in Spain. The doctor there was very cheap. He didn't speak English but got the diagnosis in about 60 seconds. Back in another country I had GPs and specialists humming and haaring who after 7 weeks arrived at the same conclusion. My $18 consult in Spain was just as accurate as my $480 consult in a country you know very well.
Phil. Yes it was a bit of a heart tugger. Oscar is like a puppy again! he's been digging holes on the beach and chasing seagulls today. I think if one of us get ill we are going to the vet. Dogs cant talk and they knew what was wrong with him straight away. Sail safe and thanks for watching. Ant & Cid. Oh and Oscar too....
So sorry to hear of your loss.Understand how you must be feeling I have just lost my little Jack Russel Archie who passed away following a brain haemorrhage had him13 years.
Hello ! Just wanted to say that I like your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ! I have a D2-40 F on my Bavaria 38 cruiser, I don't know if you have the same oil filter (Volvo ref 3840525), but on my engine the exact same is the Purflux LS801. I have open the old Volvo penta filter and noticed the way the paper is folded (like in zigzag, it offers a larger filtration area). The french company Purflux have a patent on this. So the Volvo filter is in reality a Purflux LS801. The Purflux is three times cheaper than the Volvo despite they are the exact same filter from the same company.
Thank you guys we have just written to the vets in a card we delivered yesterday, and emailed thanking them for their dedication to Oscar. without them he would not be here now. Sadly for Lady she was dead before she hit the deck. There is a better account on our web page. svimpavidus.com. Also some photos. Them pooches break your heart everytime! Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Sorry to hear of your loss my thoughts and prayers are you both. Ant can show me on how you have installed your Anti Syphon Valve please. I have read so many books on this matter and still trouble on the best way. Thanks Steve
Terrible about Lady, but great to see Oscar nearly wagging his tail off. Now then - shock news. We were told the other day that Volvo engines have a DEDICATED oil suction port - you do not have to use the dipstick. Run your eye down from the oil filter to the back of the sump on the starboard side and there is a little tube with a black shiny cap. That is it. I went and looked after I was told this and there it was. The guy telling also said it was "fragile" whatever that means... so I will probably carry on using the dipstick.
Yes your info is right. But dont use the port! Its a Volvo trick! The end cap is a tight fit and if you take it off it will never be the same. Any back pressure in the crank case will blow it out and put the engines oil in your bilge (not good) The older an engine gets the more crank case presure you get as, gasses get past the rings etc. There is no crankcase breather tube to the inlet manifold on these engines so they will just blow it out the weakest point if there is an issue. (that could be just a valve that needs adjusting). Ozzy is a soldier and a tough nut! Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Hi Ant. A friend keeps telling me that the anti-siphon should be between where water exits heat exchanger and muffler so stops coming back in from exhaust outlet back into engine. My D1-30 has it between basket and water pump, sort of similar to you. Not sure if we can use it on exchanger outlet. Any thoughts? Thanks
Hi David. The Anti Syphon valve allows air into the pipework (raw water) to prevent syphoning. It breaks the vacuum that can cause the syphon. If the water level inlet in the system is higher than the exhaust elbow (or the water cools and contracts), the water can start to syphon into the exhaust. This first fills the exhaust pipe, muffler and then the exhaust manifold. If any of the exhaust valves are open it can then flow into the combustion chamber. Liquids cannot be compressed and so, on starting the engine the piston will hydro-lock damaging the engine. Or sea water will pass the piston rings and enter the engine sump. The exhaust should have a goose-neck at its far end. It is this that stops water coming back down the exhaust not the Anti-syphon valve. However, the valve can be before the heat exchanger or after it. In your case with the Volvo Penta D1-30 it is before the exchanger with good reason. When the engine stops the Anti Syphon valve opens it allows air into the pipework before the exchanger. This in turn allows the raw water to exit the pipework before the exchanger and from/in the exchanger, into the exhaust elbow and then into the muffler/exhaust pipe. In this case the Exchanger then has no standing sea water inside it.. If the Anti Syphon valve was between the elbow and the exchanger it would not allow sea water from the valve to the elbow to drain. IE. This would mean that the exchanger would remain full of sea water when the engine is shut off and the raw water system is un-pressurised. Which is not as good as draining the heat exchanger every time. Saying that the anti-syphon valve stops water coming back in from the exhaust is totally incorrect. The valve is as its name suggests an Anti syphon or Syphon Break valve. Hope this helps. Have a great New year. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
@@SVImpavidus that's a great explanation thank you. I wonder if it would be beneficial to shut off inlet seacock each time after stopping engine (just need to remember to open before restarting!)? Especially on long sailing trips. Thanks and happy Xmas and new year.
Hi guys, very nice videos out there. I see you have the coolant box on the side, have you raised it to be above the engine level? I would like to do the same on a bavaria 30 cruiser, and also I see you have a vent to remove the heat from the compartment. Does it work only with the engine on? where do you take the power from? And Can you tell me where have you orientated the hose, in my bav. I cannot drive the hose backwards because it is all cramped. Thanks
Jordi. Hi. We unbolted the header tank from the engine and fixed the bracket to the side panel. The hoses are just replaced with longer ones. Routed away to the tank. there should be room to take them sideways. Make sure that they are clipped or cable tied to prevent vibration against the engines forward lifting eye. The vent is automatic taking a feed from the + side of the alternator output. It is only on when the engine is running. But you could put it on a simple switch on the engine control panel. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Quick question about primary fuel filter - yours looks the same as mine but the filter on mine had no markings/branding? My engine is a md2030, (and my engine bay isn’t as clean as yours at the minute as I’m working on it...)Have you done a video on changing this? Do you know the filter type/if mine would be the same as yours?
Hi Kevin. Your filter is Volvo Part number 861477 for the screw on cartridge filter and 3581078 for the element (CAV type) primary filter. You can cross reference these numbers on the web to get the equivalent filter from people like Fram, Man, or Wix. These are just as good but a fraction of the price that Volvo charge. We have not done a specific diesel filter change video but we will put it on the to do list.
@@SVImpavidus thanks for this. I use parts4engines for my spares/supplies and they seem to be fairly good for prices. I’ll see if I can find a video showing this being changed.
