    This is the most comprehensive and informative Ushiro Geri instructional design video I've seen. The advice about driving into the target on impact (to negate Newton's 3rd law of motion) and avoid pushing yourself off your opponent instead of kicking them away, is excellent.
    I also highly recommend Sensei Jason's 'Shotokan Karate Kata Volume One' video, for anyone preparing to do their black belt grading, who wants to run through all their kata in one go and ensure you are doing them properly.
    Many thanks Sensei, Oss.

    This was a fantastic and relevant lesson. I struggled with my back kick for many years always off balance. The way you emphasized to look through the target was a true game changer. Thank you as always for helping my karate these past few years! Oss 🙏🥋

    Nice! Do you have a tutorial for Yoko Geri Keage? For those who have issues hitting with the toes instead of the side foot?

    Nice back kick sensei. A lot of freaking power!!!. If this kick lands on someone's liver. It will definitely drop somebody.

    Consider adding "keage" after ushio-geri. This means the kicking knee should remain at same height following kick and the knee is then retracted back along the same line as the kick while the hips are still square to the target/opponent. Actually, Jason kind of did this a couple of times during his demonstration and may not have even realized he was doing it. But when he did, it was a much more direct and effective back kick.

    • @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL
      @ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perfect practice makes perfect technique. This is a common expression however perfection is not realistic. The best you can do is practice slowly and not rush your technique.

    None of those kicks in the demo at the start were back kicks, they're all spinning side kicks. I'm not saying it's a bad technique, but he literally goes on to say the toes should be downward and hips square, which in a back kick they should, but all the full speed kicks he does are done with open, extended hips and the foot sideways.

      Thank you for your detailed critique. As with anything, I’m not a perfect martial artist. In Shotokan there is “ideal” or “perfect form”, but in application it is very difficult to achieve. We practice with great form and technique, as the aim is to be textbook perfect. But as you pointed out, in demonstration and real application it is hard to achieve perfection. As always I work to improve and evolve my technique. Thank you for your feedback, it is highly appreciated. Hope to hear more from you on my channel, Oss! 🥋🔥🙏⛩🌎

      I've noticed this is a big deal on social media, people trying to define and differentiate when a demo doesn't look like it should. When people talk about the toes being "downward", that should be defined, do you mean almost vertical? Or do you mean 45°? I've always been taught that 45° is good for this type of kick, maybe because when it is done very quickly, it is difficult to keep the hips closed enough to keep the toes all the way down. Just a thought. Also I think it's really cool to talk about the kick done from the lead leg as well, not spinning but that's a different kind of kick obviously.

      Yes correct. When breaking the kick down he is doing a genuine Ushiro Geri.
      But when moving quickly he is doing a reverse side thrust kick, [Ushiro Kekome]
      [which is extremely useful in competition because it gives you extra distance due to the rotation of the hip]
      Both kicks are valid but it important to be aware of what kick you are doing and to know the difference.

      It isn't usually done spinning. Mawashi ushiro geri is a spinning back kick. But he's showing a real life example so usually u would use mawashi ushiro geri instead of ushiro geri
