    I can see in your techniques that you know what you're doing. And your teaching style is great.
    If I could have found more teachers like you when I was younger I know that I would have gotten a lot further.
    Thank you for sharing, it is very much appreciated.

    Great video ! The lining of the front foot is the technique that I’m looking for. Thank you. Please do one that covers the front kick, side thrust kick and back kick in one movement as well.

    Very instructing video! If I had to rank kicks in MAs, I would deem leg sweeps first, mae geri second and ushiro geri third. Whatever is your MA, combat sport, self defense system etc…these techniques are nearly an asset. Congrats on your vid! 👍

    Sir, your explanation of the roundhouse and back kick was spot on. I teach Chang Mu Kwans traditional back kick loading my knee high into my mid section, but I see the benefit of not lifting so high, instead bending the knee back. I find that it doesn't hinder the power of the kick and improves the quickness of the technique. Thank you for the valuable tip sir.

    Keen golfer just taken up karate (age 59!) I love it and this channel is great, helping me to understand the moves, and learn the terminology. Speed kill’s technique 😮. What is telegraph 🤔? I think those fast hip moves going to add yards to my drives 🙏

    • @jkgardiner

      Telegraph is when you make a movement that tells the opponent what you are about to do.
      The hip rotation from golf will carryover nicely to karate and vice versa 👍

    This is actually my best kick but I only make my sparring partners stumble back. I don't generate the power to knock the wind out or someone down (Kyokushin practioner) which is my goal. Seriously taking notes to practice this on my Ushiro Geri drill days. Hai!

    Hi John , another technique , perhaps underrated but can be devastating ,,,in combat ,, or freestyle kumite , and competition , is good old ashi bari. Foot sweeps many different ones , ankle ,,, calf ,,,,, sweeps ,

    • @jkgardiner

      Ashi barai is one of my favourites 👍

  • @NetteT11

    Thanks for this. I have massive issues with Ushiro geri and Ushiro Mawashi geri... so this is so helpful. What I noticed was in your intro, you hardly move your front foot at all. It's almost Kyokushin style. I started in Shotokan, moved to Kyokushin, so I'm having trouble twisting into Ushiro without moving the front foot. Getting there tho'✌🏼😊 Ushiro Mawashi is a bit easier strangely. Probably due to the momentum. But only one side. Hip/neck injuries really hinder fluid movement. Any ideas for helping that?

    • @jkgardiner

      I'm not sure what your specific injuries are, but are they permanent or something that can be rehabilitated?
      A suggestion might be to focus more on hip rotation and keep the head and neck fairly still, this may help, I think technique should fit your body, rather than trying to fit your body into a technique.

    • @NetteT11

      Thankyou 🙏🏼 Yes, they are semi-permanent... in that I am hoping to clear them. Old injuries, calcified. I think the way you've shown to sink, then twist...that will help. I'll get into drills with that technique and see how I go 😊@@jkgardiner man, you're so damn quick tho!!! 😁

  • @Turbulent2000

    Thanks for the video. But in my opinion, the backward rotation should be done with a shoulder blade leading it, like sensei Asai did. Its more powerful. Ossu.

    • @jkgardiner

      Maybe but allowing the shoulder to come round too much changes it to a turning side kick, which I addressed in this video, accuracy is potentially reduced and speed. There are always variations to techniques, you need to find that which suits you.

  • @DrakenYeager

    My sensei doesn't tell us to move the front leg cuz its telegraphing so we just come up with the back leg

    • @jkgardiner

      Yes I addressed that in the video. The step across is a learning exercise to get the correct alignment

    One of the several good karate moves that work nice.
    You have to time it right or else it can leave you vulnerable
    Just cut the nonsense and learn the Thai clinch, that with good punches typically ends it faster

      If you study karate in a reputable school clinching is part of the curriculum. I’m sure he does.

  • @kennethrogers1129

    No, no , no , NEVER kick and then step back, ALWAYS continue through the target on a straight line and step forward ready to throw combinations!!! Full power through the target on a straight line. Otherwise most of what you show is correct, keep your knee high and your foot tucked tight as you turn so you cannot get jammed by your opponent , he will only run into the kick …. I’ve kicked opponents out of the ring with this in tournament!!! NO< NO do not step your front foot over, that is a telegraph, just rotate and point your heel, that is your sight as you momentarily loose eye contact but the line from your heel keeps you aligned on target…. No disrespect intended, I’m an 8th Dan and love this kick. And get your final foot position better, like a side kick with bottom of heel extended, the rest of your foot tucked back.

    • @jkgardiner

      This is a shotokan karate back kick, the foot position is not the same as a side kick. It is a different technique to a turning side kick.
      The front foot, as explained in the video, is a teaching method to get the correct alignment because the biggest problem most have is missing the target.
      When I deliver it in sparring, this step across is not used.

    • @MA1980c

      The kicking leg should be more extended that.

  • @ljubisaspasojevic1066

    Ashi ushiro is much faster, and therefore much efficient, as also the other kicks with front leg.
