  • Due to popular demand and a lot of criticism, I have decided to buy and review Assassin's Creed Valhalla. So, how is the game? Is it mediocre trash like I thought? Or is it the greatest game in the franchise since Black Flag? Watch and find out.

I've done my best to try and give this game a fair chance. Actual review starts at 5:42, starting with what I like about the game.

Halo CE footage at the end. The Act Man did a recent vid and he gave Halo CE the award for best campaign of the franchise.
Maybe nostalgia is at play, but I still think Halo CE was my favorite too.
Rather play through that again than buy AC Valhalla. Even if it means going through the Library again on Legendary...

@OMGitsAzreal, 2001 was a great year for FPS games on both pc and consoles.
Big Aliens 1986 fan and you can tell with Halo CE so was Bungie back then lol.
Act Man's video about Armed & Dangerous was great too. Games like that deserve not to be forgotten.
Would say the same for XIII 2003, shame the 2020 Remake is a dud in its current state.
Even when one actively avoids Fortnite, it still mamages to ruin stuff.

Assassin's Creed forgot the "Assassin" aspect of the game since 7 games now. Eivor killing "Civilians" desynchronizes the player because Assassins had tenets to go by as "Stood their blades from the flesh of the innocent". It makes zero sense how a game like AC Brotherhood that was released 10 years ago and designed for consoles from 05 and 06 would somehow have better character animations and cutscenes than this, even if this uses a limited number of animations similar to The Witcher 3's small animation pool for dialogue options. Even those 5 year old TW3 animations look better than the ones in this and Odyssey. Origins had legit cutscenes at least and had a legit main character that pulled me into the story unlike the new trend of palette swap characters in the last two games. It's like they took all the soul out of the series since Odyssey. These games don't feel like AAA games anymore.
Also, the sidequest about clearing out the boxes of sh*t from the house is Ubisoft's meta commentary on how they can design sh*tty games these days and people will still play them. Seriously, at this point they're taking the piss with sidequests like that.

    • @terrylandess6072
      @terrylandess6072 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Clearing 'boxes' sounds no different than some of the activities in Red Dead Redemption 2. Sounds more like imitation - since trolling your customers isn't a smart strategy.

    • @aninfinitemindofmusicandreams
      @aninfinitemindofmusicandreams 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@terrylandess6072 Boxes of sh*t, and then shooting a man who looks like he lit a green smoke stick around him into a body of water so he gets his sh*t covered body cleaned up. This is a game apart of the same franchise such as AC2, Brotherhood, Black Flag, Unity, Origins. As generic in format as some of the sidequests in those games could be, such as fetch quests and collectathons, none of those had as awful in concept sidequests as this one. There's a reason why Synthetic Man highlighted how silly it is. And you mentioned RDR2 which is funny because I didn't find RDR2 anywhere near as enjoyable as RDR1. Too much bloat, too many boring side activities. But let's not kid ourselves, none of those boring side quests came as close to the absolutely awful idea of a sidequest like the one in the vid. This isn't imitation on Ubisoft's part. And if it is, the heads of those who design the sidequests aren't in the right place to come up with stuff like these. The trend of open world sidequests over the last decade has been to bring up often times mundane tasks and wrap them up in a small little side story so that players may at least find some interest in completing it. They finally wrapped one up in sh*t, so a new box checked for them I suppose. Do you find this interesting or would you simply complete it just to finish another sidequest?
Of course I'm being hyperbolic when I say they're taking the piss. I think they're smart enough to not intentionally insult the intelligence of their customers, but considering how valueless Ubisof have made the open world game in this day and age, you almost have to wonder, if only to entertain the worst case hypothetical scenario where mass psychosis has taken hold of an entire multi million dollar company if self sabotage is their intention in some way. Don't answer, because of course not, but it's a funny thing to ponder about considering what this series once was versus what it is now.

Somehow a game from 2008 managed to have great cutscenes with superior sound quality. Call of Duty: World at War is another example. Good set pieces and cutscenes with satisfying gameplay, with enemy soldiers arms getting gutted. There is nothing like this in the new Call of Duty games.

The devs of Kingdom Come Deliverance should've made a real Viking game. Or, how about a game set during the Crusades?
I hear some manga/anime is way more accurate to actual Viking history than Ubisoft's farce.
Rather get a Goblin Slayer single player focused game with an AA-AAA budget.

Man, I remember when Ubisoft focused on good stuff like Prince of Persia and Rayman. It's not like their best talent has gone elsewhere, but they've been playing it pretty safe this last decade, doing things like milking Assassin's Creed and Far Cry for all their worth, and creating an open world formula that people either love or hate. That being said, they still have some pretty talented people on their payroll. The fact that they're able to pump out their usual open world games year after year, with all of them having less bugs that your typical Bethesda game, means something.

I don't really care how long it takes though I'm not really concerned about it or even trying to beat it, I have nothing to play that interests me until Cyberpunk anyway. Some people won't like ACV, but this is my favorite AC game and best since Black Flag for me. If you really don't like it because you just don't think it's for you or even good that's fine and understandable, but I feel like a lot of people are judging the game on what they want AC to be or feel it should be, not on its merits alone. I think this game is good, but it's held back by being extremely bloated. If they cut down the content by about 20 hours and refined some of the world event side quests, this game could have been great.
Another problem is the lack of real player choice in the RPG mechanics. Ubisoft is afraid of letting the player fuck up, so not only can you respec for free, but the actual skill trees aren't large enough to define your playstyle for the whole game. There actually might only be 340 nodes on the tree, I haven't looked it up but judging from Power 96, I will definitely fill out the entire melee tree before 150.

I can say that I agree with your opinion most of the time (I finished the game and kept doing the mysteries and some farms to upgrade 3 armor sets and 6-7 weapons, more than 170 hours played). I think it's a matter of expectation. I was expecting an Odyssey clone and it is in 80% of the time. The story telling got a bit better because you have different stories and a bit variety from zone to zone (the pattern is repetitive). Overall I think the story telling is better than Odyssey (various pains as well so brakes the monotony). What I don't see you talking about (probably because you didn't get to end game) is that looting everything on the map lands you with 1-2 armor sets fully decked and 4-5 weapons out of 9+ sets and 25+ weapons. That means you have to grind kill over and over same group of soldiers hundreds of times to get the rest of the armor and weapons fully upgraded. That means also that you need to do "spear fishing" for silver for hours and hours to get the silver to buy the runes that go with various setup combinations of gear and weapons (if you want to mid max). So forget complaining about what you see and can do on the map, after that you have a grind fest for resources in order to get what you found upgraded. It's just stupid to expect that from people that literally completed the game in every possible way already.

I fully agree with you. I am an RPG guy and I find AC: Oddesey more enjoyable.
The fact that Valhalla loot only comes from chest boxes and that raids, killing enemies, or questing do NOT drop any player power type loot really annoys me. I spend a LONG time doing the Asgard quest chain and at the end ZERO player power loot rewards. I killed like 3 or 4 bosses, tamed the wolf and what did I gain from the Asgard quest chain (other than skill points)? NOTHING in terms of rewarding loot.
Another great example: the legendary beast hunt also gave NOTHING in terms of player power gear such as armor or weapons!
AC: Valhalla really needs to give MORE player power rewards for your time.
    > Good rewards for a normal amount of time
    > VERY good rewards for hard to complete, like boss fight or longer to complete like quest chain.
    > Allow the BS to offer more player power type progression, like crafting your OWN set bonuses or fuse items for more uniqueness.
Lastly, I am not a fan of these situational perks. These become less useful when fighting 1 on 1 bosses. I, much rather have perks that are not situational.
    So for example, I prefer:
    > Increases X stat by X amount and it raises the more targets you hit or surround you. This way it's always useful.
And to be honest, I find the perks in AC:Odyssey much more fun than these boring perks. I just got a rune that gave X stat at NIGHT! Why the hell handicaps me to play at night, I don't even like the nighttime.
My request to Ubisoft is, make more PLAYER POWER type perks and stop with those situational perks.

Dad of Boi is a far better viking simulator than Assassin's Creen. If you go for a killing blow at the right moment, the camera will zoom in on you eviscerating the enemy, if you stun the enemy with arrows or punches, you get a free "fuck 'em up" animation that might be a finisher or might just be a brutal beatdown if the enemy still has too much health. Some of the chests shower you with rewards and resources just like the big enemies - they always drop something valuable. Valhalla is just another Ubisoft game. It's no longer even an Assassin's Creed game.

I came raging into this video from your first one, but started to agree to some of your points.
Some of your complaints are actually valid. The combat animations get tiresome after the first 10 hours, mysteries lack any importance and don't even start with the sex scenes. Yes they didn't needed to make them grafic, I mean the Fable series handled sex pretty good in my opinion, but why the hell does Valhalla have a nudity setting when there is literally nothing which can be considered NSFW.
One of the bigger problem with Valhalla is that it's kinda like Death Stranding in a way. Even if not intended by Ubisoft the game probably only touches a small niche of people. I for myself am not blind to the problems of the game and I agree on a 7-8/10 because it is far from perfect.
Just to clarify, I am on my 40 hour mark, and conquered 4 of the regions, so I am just a bit further ahead then you are at the time of this video. I am far from completing the game, but Valhalla did something many games failed in the last years. Back when I started playing videogames I was playing alot of JRPG's. The last game that really caught me like back then was The Witcher. What also made me enjoy Valhalla so far is the fact that I am a sucker for viking stuff.
I am one of those players who would find enjoyment out of the boring part. In Valhallas case I get excited to get a new Skill point, or another Ingot, because it means progress for me. To see how the weapon changes, what the new Tattoo design looks like. But I see that that is not what everyone enjoys. I came into this video because I you spat on the game without giving it a chance. Saying "Well it's a Ubisoft game". But you do make fair and good points throughout the video. I don't agree to all of them, but that is what opinions are for, right. To end this all of you missed one of my biggest concerns about the game, which is the micro transactions. Timesavers and resource bundles should not be in a game. Either commit to making a grind game which might put of alot of people or don't bother at all and make a liniar game like The Last of Us.

You sir, are one of my favorite TH-camrs simply because you’re authentic and don’t sugarcoat your opinions.
I’m conflicted on Valhalla. There are things it does better than Origins and Odyssey, but things it does worse. For me, the worst part of the game is the goody two shoe OVERPOWERED Viking we play as, the downright silly side quests (such as one where a man refuses to bathe so Eivor shoots a platform he’s on thus felling him into the water) and the checklist structure of the game. Map - waypoint marker - collect. That’s 50% of the game. The politically correct - every female is a badass warrior - cliche grew old quick.

I hate how the RPG "AC" fans always say "If you don't like it, don't play it. We enjoy these games stop shitting on us! It's our opinion" like they are someone special. They are so entitled to their own and it's annoying. Imagine your favorite video game franchise butchered and somebody on the internet even shits on you like they are the true fans. I am a critical thinker, I hate on a game with some key points as well. First and foremost, they're forcing down the RPG elements on Assassin's Creed. ASSASSIN'S CREED an iconic stealth game. That's like turning hitman into MMORPG. This was supposed to show the story of an assassin not make them a Stan Lee cameo. I swear, there are hundreds of RPGS that have the same hack n slach mechanics that are better. I can agree that this is an opinion not anyone can deny because I'm spitting facts. Let's say for example, you love devil may cry and then suddenly the devs changed it to a FPS hack n slash like dying light (btw, I'm not saying DL is bad I'm talking about the game mechanics). And newer fans would praise it and shit on you. Now let me ask you with this given scenario, isn't it unfair to us OG fans to be treated this way? It's not like we were asking for a whole bag of candy. We only want the old AC formula to come back and actually revolve around an Assassin's story once again. We were simply asking for one franchise, just ONE, to revert back to it's roots. All of you who would disagree with me, there's too much RPG games already. Japanese, Korean, Western RPGS. I think you're the greedy ones.

I still explored every zone, killed every member of the Order, and got all the Mythical Weapons (Odin's Spear, Thor's Hammer, and Excalibur) If the game would put more emphasis on story I feel like it would've solved a lot of it's problems. Still an 8/10 for me. They finally made the modern day stuff compelling and gave the story from Origins-Valhalla a nice send-off.

    My take
Graphics: the world is BEAUTIFUL. The English countryside look fantastic. Riding through fields of flowers, the autumn trees, the greenery of southern England vs the red fallen leaves of the north. It’s stunning.
Story: 7.5 I would say. Interesting and has enough twists to keep you guessing and playing. Definitely enjoyed completing the main story line
Combat: way too fucking easy. I am playing on Drengr (hardest difficulty) and I’m clearing castles 30 power levels above me solo. The posture system is useless. If you’re parrying in this game to break an enemies posture you’re doing it wrong. Two arrows to a bosses weak spots and they’re essentially finished. Dodging is overpowered especially with the slow time ability. Maybe I feel this way because I played a lot of Sekiro but overall the combat is just too easy
Weapons: they don’t feel too different from each other until you get “Heavy Dual Wielding” currently using two spears and it makes the combat even easier. Enemies cant get close enough to hit you and you essentially stun lock all enemies (this is on hardest difficulty)
Depth: the game is not very deep. Not much to learn and towards the end you have enough points to have every skill unlocked so makes “builds” useless in the game
Overall; the game is beautiful and fun but just too easy. That being said, I have roughly 80 hours in this game already and plan on getting the completionist achievement and am enjoying it incredibly. Just wish combat was harder!

According to the genocide convention of 1948 and the general resolution of 260, genocide is an INTENTIONAL action to destroy a people (genocide is only counted if the act of genocide happens because of their ethic, national, racial or religious belief). From the information which we currently posses vikings did not as you said "killed thousands of Christians" for the sake of intentionally destroying saxons and Christians. This game is so lazy, repetitive, uninspired and buggy. I've had about 20 crashes on PS4, freezes, pop-ins, save corruptions and loading screens for every damn thing. Many will say it's just 7 year old hardware, I'll tell you it doesn't matter even if it's 20 year old hardware. If you want to release a game on any platform, the basic requirement is for it to run stably.
Performance aside there are just so many bugs, literally every system and feature has bugs. Quests are bugged to the point that you can't even progress in the main story, why even play the game then. Oh and Valhalla is buggy on every platform.
Ubisoft was touting "Free Seasonal DLC Content" well the new Yuletide update is bugged, and introduces new bugs into the base game. It only has 2 boring quests and 3 repeatable activities which are already in the game. You do all this to get "special rewards", which are just reskins of existing gear. Actual playtime for this "free DLC" is 20-30 mins, but if you grind the activities for 1-2 hours you can unlock all the "rewards". The worst part is, this "Free DLC" is a timed event, you get 20 days to finish 2 quests and grind 3 activities to unlock the "exclusive seasonal rewards". So anyone buying the game 3 weeks from now won't have access to this "Free DLC".
Moving on from bugs, there are inherent problems with the game itself. Every single thing has clipping issues, nothing has collision or individual rendering. Weapons actually shrink in size when you sheath them. The map is too big, empty, and full of useless collectibles & inconsequential activities. The mount can't climb an incline for shit, it's terribly slow in villages/cities, and the raven is rarely used. Gear is rarely acquired and few in number. The story is broken into arcs in each region, as a result it feels incohesive and badly paced. The combat is clunky, unbalanced, exaggerated and poorly animated. Kill animations look "cool" only for the first 5 hrs, you'll grow tired of seeing the same one animation for every enemy type. They're also too long and status effects/buffs don't stop during them, so a lot of builds are rendered useless if you do these flashy kills. Boss fights are unbalanced, and with a recent update "World Bosses" scale to your level, so there's no point in doing everything to become OP. The rewards for most of them are also lame, either skill points or some shitty cosmetic. Order members and Zealots drop Medallions and Runes, both of which you can do without. So for a game with 100 hrs of gameplay most of it is inconsequential and unrewarding.
The worst part about this game are the microtransactions. Compared to Origins & Odyssey, you get lesser Helix Credits per pack and items cost way more. The way to earn them freely through gameplay has also been nerfed, you earn half of the Opal/Orichalcum that you did in Odyssey. It's impossible to earn a full armour set through Reda's store because he mostly sells useless cosmetics and new gear sets are added every 2 weeks. Not to mention these MTX are too expensive, for the price of 3 Gear Packs you can buy a full priced AAA game. Yeah $60 for 3 sets of gear, weapons and cosmetics. These MTX aren't only cosmetic, all of the armour sets have unique stats and perks, so you're missing out on cool gameplay, they're also OP.
    I'm done with Ubisoft.

Same here on XBox hours of play lost. Their save system sucks. I get freezes and have to do everything again. The game puts me at a save I did not even make. This is my first Ubisoft game, not impressed. No attempt has been made to fix this. Updates take away player exploits nothing at their end to fix the game.

Remember when they added flags in AC 1 as a joke, a meme, a criticism of pointless collectibles?
Now they are the soulless machine. Thanks for reminding me about God of War.

I completely agree with you. Ubisoft has became lazy they know that if they just slap Assassins creed on anything people are still gonna buy it. They try to implement all the mechanics in all the games. Looting, power level, repeating side quests, skill points, rarity in gear. This is in AC,FAR CRY, GHOST RECON, THE DIVISION. Just compare the combat in this and GHOST OF TSUSHIMA.

I like it, but you make good points. It's just a huge step in a better direction than odessey that I like it. Definitely not my favorite, not by a long shot, but not my least favorite. The combat is the worst part and it drags it down a lot. Just my thoughts.
On a different note, your original video on Valhalla is what gained a sub to see what you would think after a shot. I'm sticking with it after watching some of your previous vids.
    Cheers!
Forgot to put that I dont really know how to feel about it. Its a fun game that i enjoy, but its not like old as games that i fell in love with. Sorry if I'm unclear, typing this at work lol.

I think it's pretty fair to like this game, there's plenty of good in it. Thanks for sticking around after last vid, I was a bit harsh lol.

Thanks for replying to my comment! Like you to Valhalla I wanted to give your channel a chance. I'm a true Assassin's Creed fan and have played every game and this game at times made me feel like ac3 or ac4. The story in particular has me hooked, its far from perfect, it barely focuses on the Creed or the struggle between the two factions, but I like what's being told regardless. Male evior actually has a personality even with your choices. Something odessey lacked. The female just wasnt my style, even after picking cassandra in odessey. I'm being long winded, but my point is. Valhalla is what odessey wanted to be. I think if they could figure out the combat and then go back to telling interesting stories set in fascinating historical backdrops, the series could reclaim much of its former glory. Anyway, I might have missed it in one of your videos, but what's your favorite AC game?
Man I feel like I wrote an essay.
