    I am a firm believer in a good powerwashing "before" any part of the hydraulic system is ever opened up. By the looks of debris, I would consider changing the filter again really soon and then getting back to a normal schedule of maintenance...Thanks for giving Chris a hand today, Fellers!👍

    My Ultra is currently down for repairs (hydraulic fluid leak and control handle issue) so I’m back to using my 10+ year old Huskee 35 splitter, it gets the job done but at like half the speed. It is better at splitting the tough stuff like the apple 🍎 that I’ll be splitting today.

    I seem to remember recommending that exact full service you just did a year ago when the seals failed last time and like the neighbor recommended amsoil just as he did. 😄 🤣 I'm just jabbing you alittle Chris all in good fun. Amsoil is incredible stuff and worth every penny. The stuff just doesn't ware out. Glad you got her fixed and off to the races again. Andrew needs to give you a new one and put that in a museum of some sort. With the hours you have on it and millions of splits it is a true testimony to Eastonmade quality workmanship.

    As much as you split you should change your fluid every year. I have a 27 ton champion log splitter I probably have split about 35-40 cords through it so far and I noticed it's starting to get a little darker so it's time to change the fluid in it.. mine only takes 5 gallons. It's always nice to see the process of changing everything out.

    Theres a 76 y.o. retired widow fella here in tiny town with C.P.,
    It takes him two hours to mow his yard with a 52" , thirty y.o. J.D. lawn tractor.
    After all that mowing he spends 35 minutes, with a leaf blower , a bench brush, a hose and towel cleaning up the mower.
    He has four people on a list ,waiting to purchase it.

    A buddy is a HD and Auto mechanic. He mounts a magnet to the side (or bottom) of oil pans / hydraulic tanks to catch all the metallic debris in the fluid before it causes problems. Remove the magnet before you drain the tank and all the little bits come out with the oil. Works pretty good.

    Nice video Chris. Ultra hydraulic system was for sure due some maintenance. In my experience with hydraulics, the "experts" that I went to for advice always said that cleanliness is next to Godliness. If it was my splitter, I'd get the complete cylinder o'ring kit and filter from the factory to have on hand for the next time you have problems or need routine maintenance. Nice to have friends and neighbors who know how to fix things. GNI

    Why when you had the cylinder apart not change the lower seals or at least inspect them. They are the ones that make your cylinder rod extend and compress? If the nut on the end comes loose it causes it to wobble and grind on the barrel causing your filings in the oil.

    Good work Chris! The rod wiper should be changed. In addition to the wiper, there should be another O-ring inside the cap, behind the wiper. Also the rod piston rings should also get changed. You should be able to get a complete rebuild kit for that ram. With all that grit and sand in there, you'll probably want to change the filter more frequently until you don't see it anymore. Change at 6 months to be safe. That sand isn't doing the pump any favors. Sorry to be one of those "Coulda, shoulda, woulda" people. 😬 Have a good day!

  • @bradh74
    @bradh74 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I drove a truck for years and know that maintenance is important, but... I have had the same oil in my lawnmower since it was new. It starts and runs every time I pull that cord, twice the first time of the year and once the rest of the year. How much do you run the equipment matters. Oil is millions of years old when you buy it (allegedly) so it don't go bad unless you use it up. Sand in your ultra? Must have been from sand blasting, unless you were at the beach shoveling sand in your tank, that's sealed. Fixed now anyway, nice job! Oil isn't Mayo it has no shelf life, not sure why they don't have an hour meter on that already?

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the sand had to be from sand blasting before it was powder coated!

    Next time.. see if you can get the full hydraulic cylinder rebuild kit. Eastonmade or the cylinder manufacturer should be able to supply this. While you already had it apart it would have only taken a few more minutes to replace the piston seals which are part of a full cylinder rebuild kit. That way you are not replacing each o ring one at a time as they fail. Ill bet those piston seals will go next by the amount of debris in there.

    I don't know if I should spend 2500 on a new 27 ton splitter I find at my local Tractor Supply store, or 4500 for the Eastonmade Ultra... Any tips?
    I've been selling firewood small scale now (about 10 full cords a year), but have been splitting everything by hand, and don't have a lot of time to do it that way. I also have a bunch of stupid big Sugar Maple rounds that trying to cut them with a chainsaw and then split them has been a long daunting task, so I was thinking one of those splitters that can tilt down to the ground

    • @InTheWoodyard

      If you could split 20 cords a year in less time than you split 10 ,
      Would you split an additional ten or just quit after ten cords ?

  • @Alan_Hans__
    @Alan_Hans__ ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need to get yourself an hourmeter to stick on the engine and create a bit of a maintenance schedule. Hopefully there is a magnet either in the tank or in the filter mechanism. That seal in the cylinder doesn't really do anything except prevent the cylinder from leaking at that end so it wasn't at all related to your problem. If you've got metal/dust/fines in the filter then it's probably your wiper seal on the end of the cylinder. The detent is affected by the wear in the valve and the orings in the valve and also the viscosity of the oil.

  • @DaleFarrish
    @DaleFarrish ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Chris, there are hydraulic shops that are setup to filter used hydraulic oil. They have a pump system with several filters on them and water separators. Might be something to consider when you do your processor. My splitter holds 40 gallons of oil and I've never changed it. I have both supply and a return filters on it. My processor holds about the same amount. Due to all the hydraulic equipment I run I should just make my own filter system.

  • @trcass1

    changing out the filter and hydraulic fluid is not fun. last year i replaced my brigs and Stratton engine with a Honda engine, which i love. while i was at it, i replaced the fluid and filter. OEM (shell) hydraulic fluid was hard to come by locally. i had to order on line and have it shipped. that was costly. i like where your drain plug is located. i have to disconnect a hose to drain my craftsman. great how-to video.

    Serious question here and I know you put on a lot of hours on the ULTRA but do you think oiling the rail is still a good idea? Looks like it holds a lot of dirt and debris everywhere and wondering if that is causing it to get in past the seals causing premature ware. Hey if want hydraulic oil my garage got 6 or 7 45 gallons barrels by the wall all the time . Bar oil is $5 per gallon, buy it’s in 45 gallon barrel to Chris . Logging equipments is the small bills is oil , its made everyday 😊. Probably the 22 MB processor need the filter and hydraulic oil change if it was new . Everything new is the first 100 working hrs must be change out . Where all your new parts break in , or wear in how you want to works it . PAY NOW , or spend BIG BUCK 💵💵💵💵 down the road . I know your playing with little equipments , but on U tube sound like it’s biggest and fastest made 😮.

    All that new stuff, it's like a total rebuild! But you left the same old tires on. And that sand!! WT...WT...HiH??? You can't run hydraulics for very long on sand! Most of it gets tangled up in the filter, and doesn't do you any good! And when you clean it out, it's still no good for your sandbox, or the pushycats sandbox!! Greasy, slippery, you know, no traction. I'd recommend no sand for the splitter. There's a whole different process for makin' synthetic oil! If you don't believe me, ask Tony. He knows. GNISSYHFPSITHO!!

    • @InTheWoodyard
