  • The town of Bisbee, Arizona has such a rich history of mining, but what is it like today? We take a quick trip through this small town to see where history and modern-day collide.
Bisbee, Arizona came on the map around 1877 when U.S. army scouts were searching for a group of Apache in the area. What they stumbled upon was water and indications of rich minerals in the hills of the area.
What followed was prospectors coming to stake out claims and soon Bisbee was known as the "Queen of the Copper Camps." Millions of gold and copper, along with silver, lead, and zinc, were pulled from the ground and Bisbee flourished.
The Queen Mine remains open to visitors providing tours 1500 feet deep into its mine tunnels offering a unique experience into what mining was like and involved during its height.
For even more insight into mining and life for citizens in Bisbee Arizona during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum provides numerous displays, artifacts, and exhibits. The Smithsonian-affiliated museum resides in one of the oldest buildings in Bisbee if the exhibits weren't enough history for you.
And for those wanting to immerse themselves where the history began, the Inn at Castle Rock (www.theinnatcastlerock.com/) has 14 uniquely themed rooms available for visitors to the town of Bisbee. Within the inn is a well rumored to be the site where mining into the rock for the rich minerals began. This quirky inn offers plenty of hospitality and old charm for guests.
Outside of history, Bisbee is a town with a thriving art community with plenty of shopping and dining. You really can find it all in Bisbee!

Loved seeing this. I was born in Bisbee. It almost died down to a ghost town when the main mine closed down, back in the 60's. Some hippies from California moved into the housing provided by the mine after work at the mine dwindled down. I live in Northern California now, sure do miss Bisbee. 💜💜💜

My brother and I stayed at the Castle rock inn a couple weeks ago. We just wanted to check out the town because we had some time to kill. And then we ended up staying there a second night. My room was decorated with one of everything from the “oriental“ store in the mall. And my brothers room was surfer themed. The owners were super nice and laid-back. The place definitely has a charm about it. Quite eclectic.

thank you very much for that Glenn and Amy. I'm researching about my great grand uncle Tom Higgins, who was one of those first prospectors in Bisbee (or Mule Gulch as it was known then), he was a child of the irish famine with little education who eventually made his fortune mining in Bisbee, going on to commission the Higgins Building in downtown LA. I'm trying to write his story, so seeing first hand stuff of Bisbee and the incredible mines has been inspiring. Nice job!

Great Video! The RED building used to be French Blue. I lived in it...alone in 1973. It was then sold along with the Copper Queen Hotel by Steve and Marcia Hutchinson. The "hippies" were actually very wealthy college grads who smoked pot and opened some "head shops", artisian shops displaying their art and pottery. Some married locals and assimulated into the general population. Most left. Original family members come and go...Bisbee High School alumni keep in touch and return for high school reunuions. Drugs and alcohol were the downfall of many over the years. Sadly, its no longer the same since new comers took over and old timers have passed away. 😢 To get a good idea of what it was like watch the film "Violent Saturday" which used locals as extras. You'll see downtown Main Street hasn't changed.

I enjoyed your video. It was well done. Why exactly did you need to wear a mask? It provides zero protection for anybody and especially over facial hair. Why are people still so dumbed down about these things? Nobody should risk their own health wearing these things, which per studies indicate can result in deep lung infections. I have some hearing loss and sometimes it's impossible for me to understand folks without reading their lips. I've been called rude when I ask people to remove their mask so I can understand them. Lately I've noticed more and more folks (either 20-somethings or elderly) are wearing them again as a sign of compliance and submission I guess. Perhaps these are the same folks that believe good health comes from big Pharma. Sad to see your compliance. Mask wearing is certainly not in the spirit of the old west, now is it?
