Excellent!
Thank you Vicki!
I wrap my ironed binding around my hand then slip it over a $1.25 paper towel holder from Dollar Tree. It unrolls perfectly while I’m sewing.
Thanks for watching! I like the way this wheel sits on my counter next to my sewing machine. I don't even think about unwinding it - it just works its magic all by itself while I sew.
Great idea!
Thanks
I wind my binding around the cardboard from a toilet paper roll, it works briliiantly
I do too and then thread a ribbon through the middle of the roll to hang round my neck. Works brilliantly.
I've tried that method as well - and I have to say that this works better for me - but there are a lot of great ideas out there to make it work! Thanks for commenting!
So do I. Then I put the TP roll on a stand alone TP holder so the cardboard tube easily rolls when I pull on the binding.
I’m one of those who learned not to iron my binding before applying it. I use a toilet paper roll to hold the flat binding and bring edges together and sew it onto the quilt.
I have done it both ways, and I've just found, for me, it's easier to attach when it's been pressed. I like the way the binding winder sits on my table and I don't have to do anything other than let it unwind by itself when I'm sewing. I, personally, couldn't easily do that with the toilet paper roll. Thanks so much for watching!
Great idea! Thank you for doing this.
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!
What a great idea!
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Mary.
You're welcome!
Thank you Mary🧵🪡
You're welcoe!!! Thanks for watching!
Good ideas.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
The binding wheel seems a bit rickety. I wind binding around cardboard or a cut-out plastic ice cream lid (cut the lid as a capital "I"). Thanks for bringing the information to us.
It's actually quite steady - not at all rickety. Not sure if you have one by your comment, but I do and I use it all the time and love it.
I ordered a wheel (they actually had a color that worked with my sewing studio's color scheme). I wrap binding on a toilet paper cardboard tube and put it on a standalone wooden TP roll holder. This setup works pretty well except the wooden base is rather large and likes to fall off my sewing table. We'll see if this binding wheel works better in the space I have.
I love mine! Thanks for watching!
My fav quilting style is applique.
Thanks Dawn! If you are posting this comment to enter the drawing, it needs to be as a comment to the Day 3 Countdown to Christmas video.
Thank you for the info! The binding wheel looks especially helpful. What size was the quilt that you were putting the binding on to? I’m wondering what happens when you have more than 200” of binding.
They have a larger wheel for larger quilts that works really well. This one could have been wound even tighter before using and I'm sure i could have gotten more on the roll.
Never saw either of the purple products... might try them. I do have a system for binding that works, but always looking for something better for my quilting. It looks like you had already pressed the binding wrong sides together before using the third hand binding tool for feeding through. Does it work as well for a 2.5" flat piece of binding? I'm assuming that's what it's made for.
Actually, I did press some while using the third hand binding tool and then the camera angle wasn't good and we had to video tape it again from the other side. If you watch all the way to the end you'll see that the binding was not folded at that point - just where we re-taped. I used a 2.5" strip of fabric and sent it through. I pressed the end with pressing solution so it would feed through easier. I use it all the time and never press ahead of time. Sorry if the video was confusing - but I did NOT press the fabric in half before using the tool.
it looks like you already folded and ironed the binding before you pit it in the tool, seems like a waste of time. can you demonstrate this w/o already folding the binding strip? Thanks.
We had to retake the filming of the tip from a different camera angle, which is why it is already folded up to 3:30 in the video. When we were filming, as soon as I started feeding it through the binding tool, and then pushing and pulling it through, the camera angle was not good and it was difficult to see how get the strip started in the tool and the feed it through. Unfortunately I had already pressed a good portion of the strip (using the binding tool) before we decided to do a "retake". I could not demonstrate the entire pressing and folding process again without cutting a new binding strip or pressing it open, so we decided just to retape with the folded strip. If you continue to watch the video all the way to the end, you can see that as I got closer to the end of the binding strip it is NOT pressed. Sorry that confused you, but please watch the video to the end and you can see that this is a great tool that works well.
I have the third hand tool and that works great. I make my binding when I get the top finished and is stored in my sewing drawer until the quilt is quilted. Thanks for the demo. Was there a question to answer?
This is just a "tips" video - there's no prize for this video - just information similiar to other tips videos I post. The videos that are labeled 25 days of Christmas (we're on Day 2) have a question if you'd like to enter a drawing. Thanks for watching
I use a product that does something similar to the 3rd hand, and lit lets me put the iron down on a silicone base so both hands are free to adjust and even up the edges and it works ok, but looking at this, your binding looks like it is already folded even pressed before you fed it through the 3rd hand tool. Can you show it with fabric that hasn’t already been folded and pressed?
I've answered this in several comments, Michele. When I was demonstrating this tool, I got part way through the pressing and the camera angle was off and I was hiding the tool much of the time. I was half way through the binding strip when we decided to switch camera angles. Here was my reply 5 months ago: "We had to retake the filming of the tip from a different camera angle, which is why it is already folded up to 3:30 in the video. When we were filming, as soon as I started feeding it through the binding tool, and then pushing and pulling it through, the camera angle was not good and it was difficult to see how get the strip started in the tool and the feed it through. I’ve really liked the third hand so I just ordered the wheel! It certainly will be nice to not have binding wrapped around my legs and on the floor 😂
Thank you! I love mine. I really don't like wrestling with binding when I'm trying to sew and this really eliminates all that! Enjoy!!!
Wonder if weighted some...
Was there a question? Thanks fir the great tips
The questions are only on the 25 Days of Christmas Videos. So far we have Dec 1 and Dec 2 and they each have a question. You can post an answer on both and be entered in the drawing for the clock. Thanks for watching!
I don’t get it. It looks like already had it folded in the basket before you ironed it.
As I addressed in two other comments, I had a bad camera angle and you couldn’t easily see what I was doing so we retaped the pressing. If you watch from 3:30 all the way to the end of the video you can see that half way through the pressing and as I continued to press AND as I finished pressing, the binding is NOT pressed at that point. I did not have another roll of binding to press and I felt this video did a good job showing the third hand binding tool and how to use it. Please rewatch if you’re still skeptical. It’s a great product.
If the environment is dry , this wheel breaks easily. The plastic is not sturdy. I returned mine because it came apart while unbinding during sewing, fell and broke.
Sorry you had a bad experience with your wheel but I don't believe this is a common occurrence. I have only had a good experience with mine as have many I know who also own one. Purple Hobbies does have great customer service and I have been more than happy with the performance of my wheel. I have used and reused it many many times with no issues.
2 pins on an ironing pad work just as well and cost nothing….as for the wheel, why nit a handle on the side to wind the binding and making it a tad sturdier…..maybe…a weight on the bottom……
Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Folding in half is so difficult you have to have a gadget?
Folding in half isn't the difficult part. Lining up hot edges and keeping them lined up while passing a hot iron over the strip to keep it aligned can be aleviated with this tool. It's just a suggestion...for me, it works. No need to purchase it if it's not your thing. Thanks for watching!
I'm quite disappointed in your deceptive demonstration of the Third-hand. Your fabric was ALREADY FOLDED in half in the basket. You made it look like no care was needed to ensure the fabric edges going into the third-hand were even.
We had to retake the filming of the tip from a different angle so it was NOT INTENDED to be deceptive, as you say, but it does illustrate how to use the tool. Please watch the first video I made on this product and you can see it really works well and the fabric was NOT prefolded. Here’s the link. th-cam.com/video/LgH9pn3aPjg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9X3NCQU0fiQZ03CK
If you look towards the end, it is not already folded.
Thanks Debbie - you're correct. If you skip to 3:31 in the video you can see that the remaining portion of the binding was not pressed. We were originally filming from the right because I'm right-handed, but when we watched the video, you couldn't see the process as well from that direction as you could from the left. I had already fed a good portion of the binding strip through the tool and had absolutely no intention of posting a deceptive video. I did offer the person making the comment the link to the first 3rd hand binding tool video that we filmed a few months ago. You're welcome to look at that as well: th-cam.com/video/LgH9pn3aPjg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9X3NCQU0fiQZ03CK The binding was not pressed before feeding it through the tool at all in that video.
