About 2 1/2 years ago my Grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. He absolutely loves Carl Smith, especially this song. It reminds him of his childhood and his father who is now long passed. About 2 years ago, right before I left home for basic training (week before Christmas), I was sitting in the ICU with him and my grandmother. He had the majority of his right lung taken out and was in rough shape. He was sitting on the bed, had a ton of wires hanging from him and was mostly unconscious from all the medication that he was currently on. I remember sitting next to him with my grandmother. Her and I were talking about his past time, and then all of the sudden it hit me... I pulled out my phone and opened up TH-cam. I began playing this exact video. (He was still unconscious at this time). His hand began to twitch, followed by his face. His lips began to move as he was singing this song subconsciously. My grandmother began to cry, as this song put his mind in a time that was not the present. A much simpler and happier time for him.
Bless you, Bless you. It's hard to let them go. My Mother loved orchids. I got her one every Mother's Day. This year I'll have to put it on her grave. She passed 2 months ago. I sure miss my precious sweet Momma, but I know she is safe with JESUS now free from pain and sorrows. ❤
@@love2bluff He lived for a few years after his surgery but was in very poor health. He was fully coherent but he was very limited physically as he would be completely out of breath from only a few steps. He ended up passing away October of last year after a tough battle with cancer.

On a lot of Saturday nights while stationed at ft Campbell KY, in the 1950 I used to set up back and listen to all these greats. After prime time 8-9pm when they were live on the radio, they let us army guys come in free.there were many great in those times.
My grandmother use to sing this to me all the time when I was a kid. Oh what I wouldn't give to hear her sing it to me once again. I learned to play the guitar so I could sing for her and she would always want me to sing this song.
After 3 TIAs and a 4th Major Stroke, my Dad, by the Almighty's Mercy, picked up his Mom's ancient Gibson (I have it), and rocked out "Strawberry Roan". He has sung this tune ("Orchid") for the better part of my 50 years. It is a favorite.
Saw Carl in Charleston SC 1955..He was with Goldie Hill, Tommy Collins and Porter Wagoner who had just begun with the great hit SATISFIED MIND. It was a great show from beginning to end.Carl has always been my favorite Country singer with so many great songs.

country music is just not like this anymore...the way the are cutting up before carl sings...the folks would chear and clap at the solos, you don't here that no more....so sad
Is it just me, or is this melody possibly the basis for Mama's Hungry Eyes. I though it was that song when I heard it from the other room. Listen and try to imagine switching the lyrics.
In the 60's every kid in at least Queensland schools sang the song, " 'Tis Anzac Day." Why can't I even get it on TH-cam. Can anybody please find and post it. Maybe Blind Freddy. Thanks in advance, Ken Wong. P.S., I lost my great uncle, Richard Wesley Wong in France, 02 03 1917.
I read somewhere once that Jim Reeves was a guest, and sang his 1959 hit "If You Were Mine" and sang it while flirting around Carl's girlfriend. Carl gave him dagger looks. I don't think Carl had much time time for Jim after that.
