    I liked the way there was no fluff. some channels, you may as well jump forward to 1 minute in, and they are STILL fluffing you, telling you about their clever thoughts, the dog, Fluffy, yadeya. very informative. I'm giving it a thumbs up, thanks. I may cut beveled pieces, front and back to reduce wind drag, not a perfect solution. Sheet metal crafted to the shape of wind tested bars is an idea.

    Really nice rack that should be able to take everything you throw at it and more! The bolts used to attach the rack uprights to the roof of the car did not appear to have lock washers. I would strongly recommend lock washers there, as was used on the bolts attaching the cross bar to the uprights.

    Well, I couldn't find any old commercial door frames. I do, however, have a surplus metal retailer near me. Bought the support structure aluminum tubing for $20. Bought all attaching hardware today for $40 ... including 5200 sealants which was $20 itself.
    I'll get the cross members tomorrow, I expect another $20 for those.
    My only problem is my Transit Connect doesn't have the mounts, and the roof channels aren't square to the roof. So, I'll be filling that space with the 5200.
    Still, you're "design" is where I got my inspiration from. Thank you.

      The roof plastic moulding is not watertight so no worries with rain, just check for debris accumulation like leafs, pine needle...etc if you park under trees. I do not plan to have a wind fairing, but I just purchased a Canoe loader that connect to the trailer hitch. It is like a third bar in the back, perfect for my 17 feet canoe. www.cabelas.ca/product/925/cabelas-canoe-loader-and-rack

      I honestly don't remember exactly all the specific size of the nuts and bolts. But I am currently making a video for a way cooler rack for my other Element. I will take note of all the specs of items used for the fabrication.
      The tools used: hacksaw, angle grinder, drill and a speed square
      The door was a craig list find, may be found at metal recycler, construction site (discard ones) new would be very expensive

    do you have any idea the thickness of the aluminum square tubing is? Can I just buy the tubing somewhere vs having to find an old aluminum door frame?

      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The commercial aluminum frame is "extruded" grade, strong stuff. Look up metal recycler for best price

    thats awesome work. I am a engineer who works a lot on aerodynamics and because the shape of your bars are flat against air. You are honestly losing about 1-2mpg due to the drag its creating. that is why a lot of rack has that visor. I suggest you get one and somehow retrofit it. seems like your more then capable.

      Thank you for your comment, I fix that problem with a rack made of round tubing that can be easily remove from the roof. Video link th-cam.com/video/h1wOhylahtk/w-d-xo.html

    How's the wind noise? Was thinking of using round aluminum tubing. Any objections? Thanks

      The wind is noticeable on the highway, I blocked the ends of the tubing and tie down the loops. Any materials is good has long has it safe to carry a load with added wind pressure...check out my other easily removable roof rack video (made with round tubing) in my TH-cam channel
      Thanks

    Great video, I just need to find me a door. What type/size bolts did you use to connect the foot to the vehicle?

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox

      Thank you for your feedback, I used Hex Cap Screws class 8.8 M6X1.00X16 to attach the footing.

    Nice, I think I'm going try this with 1" square tubing from Lowe's though " being that most roof racks for kayaks wont fit square tubing that wide"

      Hello
      The extruded aluminium that use is very strong...Maybe a good idea to test the lowes tubing for strenght first

    Hey Joe! Do you know what size this aluminum was? I can't seem to find a door but I can get Square aluminium piping.

      Hi, its two-inch square tubing and I think about 42 inches wide for my Element. The commercial doors are made with very strong alloy, I am not sure of the strength of regular tubing. Look for them at a metal recycler...good luck

    Very nice. Now all I need to do is find a door. What are the dimensions of the aluminum parts you used. Maybe a big box store has something I can use.

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      About 48 inchs per bar, the doors are made of extruded aluminum, very strong stuff...not sure about what its available in big box store.

    After removing the plastic covers to expose the mounting holes and installing the roof rack, do you need to worry about water getting into area under the plastic sides of the roof?

    • @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox
      @JoeBakerOutsideTheBox  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the plastic trims are mostly there for look but you need to worried for debris like dead tree leaves and pine needles accumulating in there if you park under trees
