I'd say that the first 3 or so episodes of SAO are genuinely good. The first one is actually great, but the rest after that is Mary Sue fan fiction level writing. I am also one of the few people who like the ALO arc because it is melodramatically ridiculous. Like that was the point where SAO went into super otaku levels of territory that just completely shat on the less seasoned anime watchers, and I couldn't help but laugh at how ridiculous it was. It almost felt like a parody of what season 1 was trying to be.

I swear everyone who hates on SAO actually liked it as first but just jumped on the hate train, as any anime fan who likes SAO is not a true fan. SAO has a lot of issues but its faaaar from the worst.
I'll admit I enjoyed the first episode a lot. So much so that I couldn't wait for the second episode and I ended up reading through the light novel. However, I was very disappointed with the series at that point. I was basically waiting for the hate bandwagon to arrive at the station before people even knew there would be one. My issue with it is very simple, it is basically a model case of Mary Sue fan fiction style writing. However, it has a great premise and the combination of that with the shitty writing lead to a lot of disappointment. Then my disappointment magnified my hate. If it had a shitty premise and was a shitty show (like Death March for instance) then I wouldn't really hate it that much. After cooling down, I'd honestly give the series a solid 6/10, going up to even as high as 8/10 at certain parts. I genuinely enjoyed the movie, and I ironically enjoyed ALO.
I was 12 when i watched it. I was hugely into games and esports was a new thing coming up strong. SAO was destined to rise and i loved it. To all those who re-watched it after they grew up, i am sorry you ruined your own childhood 😂. It's a shit show but me as a kid liked it. Why? Because i didn't know what good anime was back then and every anime was good to me SAO had luck and right timing on its side and that's why they got till these many seasons. I still don't blame people for liking the show. It is nostalgic to me

you see I think SAO is good up until Episode 15, from there onwards it's a clusterfuck of a plot but I did think it was interesting that Asuna was stuck in the VR game, (The reason why she was stuck in the game was incredibly disappointing). it definitely could've been much longer as I would've liked to see more character development, more worldbuilding even though it was quite good, and more boss battles, they skipped out on a lot of levels which was a disappointment because it could've given them a chance to make completely new creatures that we've never seen before. and also it's the first anime that I ever watched so it has a special place in my heart. for me, it's a 9/10.

Crunchy roll was free back in the good old days, but it didn't had a lot of anime available, so yeah, illegal websites were the norm.
