Well like any poll of this kind, it's more a contest of popularity than of quality. SAO was massively popular in Japan. It's still very popular but it was really huge back when the anime first came out and the few years after. The Novel's sales were insane.
You know that when some self-claimed popular Japanese franchise operates in your country for years, and it happened that after some years you get to know some guy from Japan and ask them about it. And they said: I've never heard of it.

I cant describe how happy I am that Natsume Yuujinchou was on there, it’s so just *pure* For anyone who sees this that doesn’t know The story follows Natsume and his bodyguard, Nyanko Sensei. Natsume has grown up being able to see yokai, because of that people though he was weird and avoided him, and as a result he would get mad at the yokai and blame them, but as he grew up he started to understand the yokai, and understand that not all yokai are bad, he matures and also manages to gain healthy relationships with humans too, something his younger self could probably never imagine. Throughout the story we get to see Natsume grow even more, as he tries to fix mistakes(?) made by his grandmother that she left behind, and best of all we get to see Natsume learn and understand that *he deserves to be loved* Its just very wholesome, very pure, I aww every episode

ned821 and honestly, just because an anime is critically good doesn't mean it'll become your favorite. Gourmet food might be better critically than your cheese filled local pizza but that pizza will still be your favorite food. Human emotion doesn't just boil down to what is objectively true about the things around them. Humans aren't robots, for better or worse. When it comes to favorites it really comes down to, surprise surprise, what you LIKE rather than what critics say is better. That's just how the human brain works. You may appreciate something for its artistic value, but that's a far cry from actually "loving" it.
that is why i almost never listen to critics when it comes to anime/games/movies, i've watched so much anime that so many anime reviewers call trash because i thoroughly enjoy them regardless.

I'm surprised there was no Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, Bleach or One Punch Man. Not because of quality in some cases, but they're massively popular in other places but they weren't even on the top 100. I mean if fucking Sword Art Online can make it up there, basically anything can.
Anyone who loved Re:Zero needs to watch Erased. Its a similar concept but based on a lot more realistic story. I'm currently watching it and I absolutely love it. I'm on episode 9 right now. Stayed up late during the night just to see it cuz I got work later.
Tigger and Bunny being so high does not surprise me. Nobody in my anime community was talking about it, I found the show through the tokusatsu community. It genuinely has a kamen rider/ metal hero vibe to it. I believe that's the reason why it ranked so high. When you have a show that channels audiences from all generations, it's bound to gain traction. That also might be the reason why it's not as popular intentionally. The only widespread tokusatsu exposure outside of Japan is Power rangers, and even then it will never be as big of a cultural phenomenon as Super Sentai in Japan.
Merc Love Live in Japan is extremely huge. In Japan alone, it sold the most anime related merchandise in 2017 beating One Piece. Being a multi media project supported by several huge companies, it's plastered everywhere.
Free! was on three times. xD Eternal Summer was the lowest, and then Free! Starting Days (which is the prequel to the first season) was literally one above it. Then Free! the first season was the highest point at number 48.
The Japanese anime community is obviously gonna be different from the international one. Unlike us where we have to go online to watch anime they can watch it straight from their TV. They have all the commercials, shops, and many other things easily obtainable. Of course they're gonna have different tastes considering the medium is so different over there. Anything obscure in the west could be a phenomenon in Japan and vice versa.

Wow, One Punch Man must have really been more of an international hit. I'm not surprised to see that Dragon Ball and Naruto are not on there since those two are giants in the manga industry more so than the anime industry; I think the reason One Piece was somewhere in the top 100 is because One Piece in general is just so huge, even compared to Dragon Ball and Naruto.

ok I have some explanations for these. First of all, I'd explain One Piece or Fullmetal Alchemist being so low is bc the manga is bigger in Japan, and OP is a series that is still running. I think that hibike Euphonium or Hyouka are quite high up bc they are slice of life animes, therefore maybe quite relatable for the Japanese audience? And Tiger and bunny is huge, my cousin is not really into animes but one of the rare ones she watched is T&B. I was expecting more Ghibli movies, but apparently the Japanese audience is getting tired of it? (I've seen a news about that not long ago...) Aaaand you can see the dedication of Japanese otaku (neets at this point seriously) to put Love Live this high x)
Aymane Imlahi Same as One Piece, the mangas were huge. In Japan, we have the weekly chapters easily. Overseas, mangas take forever to be translated (officially, not scans), and are quite costive, which is why I'd explain a bigger success of the animes... But again, this pole (and like any other pole) is quite biased bc from what I've read in the male and female separate poles, I'd say that most of the voters are in their 20s: there are animes that are waaaay more popular in Japan, such as Doraemon, Chibimaruko chan, more Ghibli movies, or even recent seasons of Pokemon, that didn't make the cut bc they appeal a younger or broader audience. Hard to be objective on those poles huh? ;)
Akiko M I agree, polls are generally biased because sometimes they don't tell you they just polled just a certain kind of people and you feel like all audiences are the same. I think a better way to know what's popular in Japan is to look at top selling charts. Also, I agree about the Ghibli part, it's obvious that people has grown bored of their style (or just one studio being popular in cinemas). Now that movies like Your Name and A Silent Voice became popular, it's an opportunity to other studios to make high grossing movies. I think it's the same as what happened when Disney stopped being that popular and other studios than Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks started making popular movies.
To me, the finished and completed series seem more genuine and classic If only Bleach had ended when it was intended to then it probably would've been better

The story follows Natsume and his bodyguard, Nyanko Sensei.
Natsume has grown up being able to see yokai, because of that people though he was weird and avoided him, and as a result he would get mad at the yokai and blame them, but as he grew up he started to understand the yokai, and understand that not all yokai are bad, he matures and also manages to gain healthy relationships with humans too, something his younger self could probably never imagine. Throughout the story we get to see Natsume grow even more, as he tries to fix mistakes(?) made by his grandmother that she left behind, and best of all we get to see Natsume learn and understand that *he deserves to be loved*
Its just very wholesome, very pure, I aww every episode

ned821 and honestly, just because an anime is critically good doesn't mean it'll become your favorite. Gourmet food might be better critically than your cheese filled local pizza but that pizza will still be your favorite food. Human emotion doesn't just boil down to what is objectively true about the things around them. Humans aren't robots, for better or worse.
When it comes to favorites it really comes down to, surprise surprise, what you LIKE rather than what critics say is better. That's just how the human brain works. You may appreciate something for its artistic value, but that's a far cry from actually "loving" it.

I'm surprised there was no Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, Bleach or One Punch Man. Not because of quality in some cases, but they're massively popular in other places but they weren't even on the top 100. I mean if fucking Sword Art Online can make it up there, basically anything can.

Tigger and Bunny being so high does not surprise me. Nobody in my anime community was talking about it, I found the show through the tokusatsu community. It genuinely has a kamen rider/ metal hero vibe to it. I believe that's the reason why it ranked so high. When you have a show that channels audiences from all generations, it's bound to gain traction.
That also might be the reason why it's not as popular intentionally. The only widespread tokusatsu exposure outside of Japan is Power rangers, and even then it will never be as big of a cultural phenomenon as Super Sentai in Japan.

The Japanese anime community is obviously gonna be different from the international one. Unlike us where we have to go online to watch anime they can watch it straight from their TV. They have all the commercials, shops, and many other things easily obtainable. Of course they're gonna have different tastes considering the medium is so different over there. Anything obscure in the west could be a phenomenon in Japan and vice versa.

Wow, One Punch Man must have really been more of an international hit. I'm not surprised to see that Dragon Ball and Naruto are not on there since those two are giants in the manga industry more so than the anime industry; I think the reason One Piece was somewhere in the top 100 is because One Piece in general is just so huge, even compared to Dragon Ball and Naruto.

ok I have some explanations for these. First of all, I'd explain One Piece or Fullmetal Alchemist being so low is bc the manga is bigger in Japan, and OP is a series that is still running. I think that hibike Euphonium or Hyouka are quite high up bc they are slice of life animes, therefore maybe quite relatable for the Japanese audience? And Tiger and bunny is huge, my cousin is not really into animes but one of the rare ones she watched is T&B. I was expecting more Ghibli movies, but apparently the Japanese audience is getting tired of it? (I've seen a news about that not long ago...) Aaaand you can see the dedication of Japanese otaku (neets at this point seriously) to put Love Live this high x)

Aymane Imlahi Same as One Piece, the mangas were huge. In Japan, we have the weekly chapters easily. Overseas, mangas take forever to be translated (officially, not scans), and are quite costive, which is why I'd explain a bigger success of the animes... But again, this pole (and like any other pole) is quite biased bc from what I've read in the male and female separate poles, I'd say that most of the voters are in their 20s: there are animes that are waaaay more popular in Japan, such as Doraemon, Chibimaruko chan, more Ghibli movies, or even recent seasons of Pokemon, that didn't make the cut bc they appeal a younger or broader audience. Hard to be objective on those poles huh? ;)
Akiko M I agree, polls are generally biased because sometimes they don't tell you they just polled just a certain kind of people and you feel like all audiences are the same.
I think a better way to know what's popular in Japan is to look at top selling charts.
Also, I agree about the Ghibli part, it's obvious that people has grown bored of their style (or just one studio being popular in cinemas). Now that movies like Your Name and A Silent Voice became popular, it's an opportunity to other studios to make high grossing movies.
I think it's the same as what happened when Disney stopped being that popular and other studios than Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks started making popular movies.
