- THIS IS NOT A GRAVEL RACE chronicles the 10th anniversary of the most unique cycling event in the country, the Belgian Waffle Ride. The only Spring Classic on American soil and a Monument of Gravel, the BWR CA is known as the 'Hell of the West’ and features an extremely challenging 135-mile multi-surface course across single track, rocks, water crossings, sand, gravel and some roads - all taken on in temperatures reaching 112 degrees even though it rained the morning of the race. This documentary highlights not only the arduous trails to victory for winners Peter Stetina and Katerina Nash but also the journeys of several other riders from a variety of backgrounds, including BMX star, Andrew Jackson, cycling newbie and former D1 soccer standout, IZ King, professional road cycling champion, Whitney Allison, and PR and marketing maven, Alain Mazer. With over 4,000 registrants, this was the largest gravel race in history and also the most interesting.

What would you say is the average tire width in these races? Some racers look like they are running 2in plus, then some look like they are on 28c. I'm curious what is considered the optimal width.
i think for this course the optimal tire is 30mm, wiht some doing it on 28s and many on 32s or bigger.

but these races are more like amateurs road races, are they like professional road cyclist?
The Belgian Waffle Ride is a melting pot of amateurs and pros. The pointy end of the race is always fast and a pure roadie would be challenged by the terrain! A little further back it's a party for for people just looking to enjoy riding the wrong bike on the wrong terrain. If you've never done one you should add it to your bucket list!
The largest prize purse race I have ever been in was a gravel race with a grand total of 10,000k USD. Anyone could enter the pro/open category but they had some fast cut off times for the course. The road Rivas usac prizes are tiny in comparison maybe I. The 1000 dollar total range.

The former Pro Tony Romminger once said, riding a racing bike without gloves is stupid, but i think he got his lesson. Great content, i have to go to America to ride gravel, here in Europe it is not the same.

Don't come here. We ride gravel because there's too much road traffic! Fewer people LESS TRAFFIC.
No wonder Mo Wilson was so good. She was 10 years younger than any of these people.

@@CR3DT I had mt shoes but lots of guys prefer road shoes because they are a few grams lighter.
