I've been painting and drywalling for 22 years and I've seen this happen, white pigmented shellac will make it paintable or oil base primer, if not it'll fisheye big time. This man really knows his stuff. When I use silicone caulking in wet rooms I basically cut the tip as small as needed and don't wipe it, kinda like sider's, you just gun it smooth, small, and evenly.

Thank you! My parents DIY'd their bathroom, and the caulking around the bathroom sink is horrendous. Trying to paint and repair, and got stuck! Glad to hear the oil based primer will do the job - I was thinking I might need to scrape, sand, and recoat - so this is a way better solution.

A good way to finish silicone is to carefully run a bead than spray it with denatured alcohol then wipe it with either your finger or a grout beading tool. It won't stick to your finger or spread out when finishing it. Comes out lovely.

I use ammonia free pressurized window cleaner. They sell it at Walmart or the dollar store, it's in a blue and white can. The brand is called Sprayway....I have a can of denatured alcohol but it's much more expensive than the window cleaner. Just a tip if you don't want to waste your alcohol! 🤣🍻

Ok. Another good video. You are 100% correct. You cant paint over silicone, and it is really only good at a few things. Calking countertops to each other or against areas not to be painted...ever. Or in building fish tanks.
Anything else either use something like "siliconized " latex or for areas that need to withstand the elements a polyurethane caulk. Which I would not recommend for novices but is probably the best all around sealant there is.
Latex caulk, or even silicone caulk over silicone caulk will eventually fail. If a bath or shower needs to be recaulked. You must remove all the old silicone caulk and as much of the residue as possible. For some reason. Not only doesn't anything water based like to stick to silicone. But silicone itself doesn't like to stick to cured silicone either. it will go on. But it wont hold up.
If you must paint over silicone or anything that has had silicone on it (the residue often remains even after the silicone is removed) the oil primer will work somewhat. But as someone else pointed out a shellac based primer will work and hold up the best over the course of years. BIN is one. Sherwin williams also makes one though the name escapes me at the moment even though ki have a can in my truck. LOL
the good thing about shellac based primer is it sticks to everything. the bad thing about shellac primer...is it sticks to everything. So be careful on what you get it on. Especially eyeglasses.

I learned a trick - if you put unpaintable silicone and need to paint it - put a coat of shellac paint first on the silicone bead. Then it dries, you can put a regular paint on top. Not perfect, but it can cover some mistakes.

Installed over 100 tubes of silicone in my row home most of them 35 years ago when I had walls open. Silicone gaps between hardwood floors & walls. Silicone bottom of sheetrock to floor silicone to seal all electrical boxes on outside walls. Got most of it free from work. Have all low e windows and added insulation in static equal to around a R45. Had the temperature set at 74 to 76 all last winter and gas bill was never over a $100. That includes gas water heater dryer & stove. Usually purchase bathroom silicone because it usually will not mildew.

Even though I knew better - I had some leftover white silicone caulk after trimming my countertops & backsplash didn't want it to goto waste. So I figured I'd burn this tube out trimming inside small cabinet above stove (all cleaned & prepped minus white paint tho). Of course my paint ran but Rustoleum sells a universal bond to anything primer spray paint. Sprayed some layers over my silicone joints and it painted beautifully. EZ fix highly recommend!

Just several months back I painted a bathroom that had work done to it about 15 years ago, unfortunately the people who did the work used 100% silicone calking around not only the tub and sink but also the molding around where the walls meet the ceiling, yes it was a nightmare.
One of your contemporaries on another channel recommended a can of spray shellac to coat the silicone with first and it worked beautifully.
That same trick was also recommended by someone on another channel to coat drywall areas that have had the outer layer of paper torn off exposing the brown paper underneath before putting mud on them for fill, it also worked beautifully for that and doesn't take long to dry after spraying it on.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It does work great for those things, but I avoid it often due to the odor in a customers finished home, and the flammability issue, but it's pretty safe in small amounts.

Yea I only used it for spot repairs generally, the silicone in that bathroom got primed over shortly after the shellac was applied since it dried so quickly and sealed it's odor off before the homeowner even got home from work that day.

Silicone caulk that burns your eyes is releasing acetic acid. There are other silicones that don't use acetic acid as a curing agent. The problem with the silicone/paint combo is the silicone oil in the rubber base material. Nothing sticks to it. Alcohol can help to remove it but it's really always there.
I used to build semi custom boats and I wouldn't allow silicone in the building. Fish eyes in a hull side stand out like a sore thumb and ruin a $10000 paint job. And can ruin it a second time if you don't get it all off (and you never really know until you pull the trigger). I hate silicone.

Nice video and cat. I recently used white silicone between a white plastic window and wood window trim. Not sure that was the best solution but I was painting the trim white so the paint resistance of the white silicone actually seemed to help result in a clean line.

She has one bedroom where in three of the rooms corners it looks like someone caulked the vertical corners. When it starts getting cold the corner blisters the entire length of the adjoining surfaces. During the spring/summer it goes back to normal. It looks like they butted the vertical corners tight to each other and did not pre-fill the joint with hot mud. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks for your time.

I made the mistake of letting the guys doing my home's weatherization do whatever they thought was best many years ago before I became a DIYer. They ran that da#n silicone around every single window, vent, door frame and crack in my house. I get OCD when trying to remove it and end up having to repair the drywall. Is there an easier way?

Nope. Dap Alex is garbage. Dap has good products but Dap Alex when applied correctly will crack in a year or so. You'll need a paintable caulk with a 50 year or more guarantee. I have experience with Dap Alex and I haven't used it in over a decade. The 50 year guarantee isn't necessarily a guarantee but a telltale that it'll last longer without cracking. Different polymers.

In the business using caulk all day long with windows and doors. Save yourself the time and effort and find a good Polyurethane caulking it's indoor and outdoor bonds very well to almost anything except dust. It's flexible, paintable can be cleaned up with den/alcohol. Imo have plenty of extra paper towels to clean up or use blue tape to make a straight caulk line. Fill the area ur sealing, don't just run a light bead and smooth it out. Cut the tip to the width that u would like the size of your finished caulk line. U can also use a window cleaning solution soaked rag to dampen your fingers if you are mint using a caul king tool as It repels the caulk from sticking to you as well as makes it easy to use and keep ur hands clean so dirty finger dont makes dirty caulk line. One of the best tips to make sure u don't start making a huge mess and getting caulking one o everything is to use an old shirt like a painters board, hold the neck line and pull it back over your arm inside out an as you smooth the caulking out wipe the excess that is pulled off right onto that shirt and when your done just take hold of the bottom of the shirt closest to you elbow and remove it so that your caulk covered sleeve part gets pulled back over keeping all that excess caulk on the inside and creating a larger mess that cause you to spend as much time cleaning up mess that can be avoided. Sorry if it's confusing. I tried to explain it easily and detailed how it will keep your area clean
