      @nyer070 true, it could have been cut down, but he is informing people that may not know. Someone may not know that you should wrap all threading, regardless of what the material is made of, or for the application of diffrent fittings.

    When using teflon tape to mount a faucet or some valve I can never get it to end up at the right angle (ie 90 degrees) when I tighten it down. How do you do it ?

    Just put in tankless water heater. Used tape first. 3 leaks. Used dope 2nd time. Zero leaks

      That’s the issue I’m having. I think the threads are so sharp, it’s cutting the tape. I’m going to try the “both” method (tape and dope).

  • @Kirbythediver

    My master plumber buddy says: do both if you're really worried about a specific fitting.

  • @colden1877
    @colden1877 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Pipe dope on top of the Teflon tape also will also help lubricate the fitting allowing you to get it on tighter.

      Pipe dope on top of 3 wraps of teflon tape works wonders in certain apps...500 psi nitrogen. Male Threads must be cleaned with acetone/91% alcohol before taping. @ralphmacchiato3761

      I rarely have a professional plumber work on my house, but when I did have one do some work a few years ago he applied pipe dope on top of Teflon tape. When I asked why he used both he said "I don't like call-backs and using both has reduced callbacks to almost zero". Since then I've been using both.

    this video saved me from removing a new tub valve install - unsoldering two male copper fittings and replacing them because of two leaks that I had tightened all the way and still leaked. I'm usually not a teflon tape + pipe dope guy, but had to give this a try before I spent a couple more hours redoing new work because of poor threads. I removed the unions, cleaned off the threads, wrapped 3-4 rounds of teflon tape and pipe dope and it worked! No more leaks, no more work.

    I have a shower wand that has one of those incredibly short 1/2" male nipples. I set the drop ear elbow the distance specified in the directions and if the tile guy did his freaking job right I would have been able to get more threads into the DEE fitting. But he didn't and now it is not a super solid bond.
    So I was thinking of using tape and paste but all the paste at Home Depot is soft setting.
    I'm praying that this works and hope there are no leaks.
    Any recommendations on the best way to seal threads with this type of situation, or will I just need to hope and pray? LoL

    Added a back flush valve to my hot water heater and the adapter to bottom of the valve threads were too sharp, it kept cutting the tape no matter how many wraps I used.
    I’m going to try the tape and pipe dope together next…

    Does pipe thread sealant help prevent it from getting jammed up in the future. Let’s say if it has to be unthread, 15 years later and it’s rusted and corroded?

    • @RagingOatmeal
      @RagingOatmeal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tape is a lot easier to take apart in the future because the tape kinda shreds up when you loosen it. Depending on the dope/paste, regular stuff with ptfe seems to harden absolute rock hard making disassembly a pain. Metallic and non metallic dope seems to stay soft which is nice

    Do not use Teflon and pipe dope at the same time on PVC fittings they will crack use one or the other use the blue PVC tape, Teflon or pipe dope when dealing with chemicals such as SH
    Go with Blue

    Teflon tape works for most but stainless steel has a special tape. The special stainless tape prevents galling. Brass, Steel and PVC can use regular teflon tape but stainless is different.

    I didn't need thread sealant. I used the Makita grinder and cut the metal tubes but left just enough for me to pound in some plugs and I used some JB Weld to seal around those plugs. Then when that's cured I'll just bolt them back on.

    You just twist the tape into a thin thread and place it in the groove of the tap, then proceed to work the full thread and done.

    "Clockwise" doesn't mean anything unless you say whether you're looking at the bolt from the direction of the threads or the head. It's also incorrect for left-handed screws, which we do get used for certain devices. Instead, it's better to say that the tape goes in the "opposite direction to the way the bolt turns for tightening" because this is true no matter how you look at the bolt, and whether it's a left-handed or right-handed screw.
