$5,000 clubs...that's like five years of green fees for me. I'll stick to playing extremely mediocre golf once a week, thanks... But they ARE nice clubs. And I've been using graphits shafts on my irons for a decade, now. Just felt way more comfortable than steel shafts.
I figured out why Brad is such a good fit. He has the demeanor and presence of Arnie and the game like Jack. Just a damn good dude wherever he is. If you you go back and watch, he even managed to not show (kind of) emotions around the GG Athlete that’s personality just grated on everyone’s nerves. You spend all that money on clubs to basically play around the same as before. Just goes to show that most of the time, it's the players problem and not the clubs problem
So at the risk of sounding like a dunce, how would changing a shaft change timing in your swing? Is it a mental thing or is it that the shaft is flexing more or less to help with the timing?
too bad the clubs dont make the player you would be in the pga!! hope you at least donate your thousands of used clubs...if not you guys need to start!!
I will never understand changing clubs so frequently and every year. I prefer to just have my clubs resurfaced and re-groved. I still play with 690mb Titleist irons for about 15 years.
10.5 driver and 16.5 wood? Sure its more forgiveness but now i see why your launching skyballs off the tee. Too much head speed for that, give that setup a try when your 60+ years old
Is it possible to handicap the price per stroke that you guys are gambling for as well in other words Brad loses more per stroke than his opponent does? It's awesome when you guys have money on the line way more interesting to watch obviously.
128 mph speed whew hoo ,I never played until I was near 44 after playing Ball and had 119 Club Head Speed at Golf Galaxy ,67 now and 5 shoulder Surgeries later !
How much time do you spend on fittings trying different set ups? You mentioned trying them on the range and loved them, but I assume you still had a fitting to verify what you felt.
I’ve never owned expensive golf clubs. Would you say top of the line clubs have more “pop” in them? Maybe similar to a $100 baseball bat to a $400 composite bat? I’m just curious if the price is worth the extra yardage?
I just went from a set of mid-2000’s Cobra irons to a set of Callaway Rogue Max OS’s (a ~2 year old set from brand new), and they play way longer for me. I’ve had to totally re-hone all my distances it’s so severe. Like I used to hit my 9 iron 145-ish if I was swinging smooth, with the new 9 iron I have, if I go after one it can fly 160-ish, sometimes more. Modern irons have so much technology bottled up in the clubface. I waited as long as possible to get a new set since I only play on the course 3-4 times a month and hit at the range 2-3 times a week, but I honestly wish I did sooner. Helped my game a ton
For the most part, no, especially in irons. A lot more nuance to "more expensive = farther". Newer/more expensive clubs of the same type of club don't have more pop/distance in them purely just from it being newer. It's largely influenced by loft/shaft, and a bit of face technology in Game Improvement/Super Game Improvement clubs can optimize launch for better consistent distances. A massive issue with new irons nowadays is loft jacking to make it seem like irons "go further". Callaway's Paradym X 7 Iron is literally just a 5 iron specs with the number "7" printed onto it. It's all marketing to make amateur's think that these new clubs are making them hit the ball 15-20 yards further, when in reality, they're just hitting more club. As long as the club is made decently well and there are no defects, and the loft/shaft/head profile are the same, a $20 used players 7 iron from 2007, a $70 Takomo 7 iron, $200 Callaway 7 Iron, and a $350 7 Miura iron will all go an identical distance. Most tour players play blades/cavity back players irons, which the technology and design is basically identical to as it was 20+ years ago. Tiger's Taylormade P7TW's are pretty much just slightly tweaked recreations of his 2000s Nike/Titleist blades. Woods have more of a bit more of a technological advantage from newer/more expensive, better forgiveness, and modern shafts are very important. Anything from the 2010's is going to be as long as today's drivers/woods.
In my opinion, the distance comes with your swing, not the club, although newer clubs would probably help a little. The biggest difference is what you can do with the ball and the shafts. I think it is always worth to get fitted if you're going to spend a lot on a set of irons, but you definitely don't need the most expensive set of heads.
