Thank you for posting this! I also appreciate the added step of heating it to show it returned to working as it was supposed to because I did question the safety of trying something like this.
I fixed my dryer today using the information you provided in addition to the comment below from the HA/HVAC-R tech that suggested putting the part in the freezer for awhile before hitting it. It was a very simple “repair” and I didn’t have to order and wait for parts to arrive - always a bonus!
Found this while waiting for Samsung support on the phone (wanted to ask where to buy a new for my oven). Fixed it before they even answered. Problem solved. Thanks!
Purely by accident I came across your video, and damn glad I did. Took the old high limit fuse out of my Samsung drier and tapped it with a pair of pliers. I could not slam it onto a hard surface because of the bracket. One fairly light tap and the meter was singing its praises. I put it back into the dryer and hey presto we are drying again. My wife now thinks I'm a genius, so thank you.
I just bent the bracket back so I could slam it down on the floor. As in the video though, what finally worked was tapping it with a tool while holding it in my hand.
I'm a HA-HVAC/R tech and we've been doing this for ages for temp repairs. If you have a freezer available, cooling the bi-metal element down before the "smack" will make it much easier to reset. Many times just cooling the element below freezing is enough to snap the element back down on it's own.

Hi, Maybe you can help, I tested all my parts out on my whirlpool gas dryer.. continuity tests, changed ignitor, jumped out thermal fuse, checked ohms on gas valve magnets, all good, cleaned dryer out, cleaned out all ducts. Still no glow on the ignitor. I even checked the flame sensor. All good. What next? Thermostat change? That showed continuity too. I'm stumped. I usually fix everything.
When you say temp do you mean temperature or temporary?
Just hit mine with a wrench a few times, dryers working again. Thanks so much you saved me some time and money.
Buddy, I came across this while searching for temporary solutions on Google and you just saved my Saturday night! The major hardware stores near me that were open didn’t have these fuses and the appliance store that has them won’t be open until Monday but I still have wet clothes that I can now finish drying from beating it with a tool!

Brought my dryer back to life with this hack.
This is great! Our dishwasher stopped working on Thanksgiving. We have a ton of plates piled up from hosting Thanksgiving dinner and dessert for our extended family. I thought I was going to have to run around on black Friday to search for a replacement limit switch, but now we can start running these loads of dishes and I'll order a spare switch to keep on hand in case of future problems. Thanks!
You just saved me a massive headache.. 7 years on. I had to build a makeshift continuity tester from my sons electronics kit. But identified the thermostat that was bad. There were 3 .Gave it a few bashes on the table.. (Had to do it much harder than expected) Tested again and it was reset. Clothes now drying! Thank you

Awesome trick. Fuse went out on a Friday at the beginning of a holiday weekend so all the shops were closed for a few days. Fixed my problem for now until the new replacement part comes in.
Man you saved the day !! I just replaced the heater and the fuse, and my dryer wasn't working still. I yanked out the thermostat after checking it and finding out it was stuck, and bam fixed it !! Thank you for showing this !!

It worked as you described! The switch for my unit is backordered and it would have taken weeks to get a new one. You saved us! Mine had brackets too and one snack with a knife handle reset it.

I don't normally comment on youtube but on this occasion I would like to make an exception, I really didn't think this trick would work on a none resettable thermal fuse, But after following the instructions on your video I have just fixed an Indesit tumble dryer, approx one and a half hours work to disassemble the machine find the correct fuse has mine had two thermal fuses. remove fix and put back together, Total cost £0. Thank you.

I saw a spec sheet for my "non-resettable" high limit that showed a "reset temperature" of -100 degrees. So I reset mine using dry ice. (I had waited too long to clean out the duct.) A few years later it tripped again; I had waited too long again to clean out the duct! I reset it again with dry ice.
Thank you so much! After getting super frustrated that my dryer stopped heating I bought a cheap chinese parts kit, and then a multimeter after it didn't work, and found out it was this part. The cheap replacement was already defective and is beyond repair. However, the original part was reset after a good couple of whacks with a pair of pliers. Great video!

Hey Kev. thanks for the tip. LG DLEX3250V, Part #693EL3002M tapped it a few times with a solid screw driver handle and checked it with the multi meter, it worked. Installed it into the dryer and bob's your uncle. My dryer would power on but would not start when the start button was pushed, checked the various thermostats with the multi meter and found the culprit. Thanks again.
just did this on for my very old dryer. it works! always clean all the vents lint traps and fans to or else it will trip again
Holy *** it actually worked. I must gabe accidentally done that when I took apart my dryer months ago. Which miraculously started heating after I cleaned it out. This worked the after troubleshooting your video auto played and I couldn't believe it worked when I tried it.

It worked and I even reset the original one I had kept. Stupid little devices making us wait for days to get a replacement. We have 9 people in our house and the dryer must run continually. Thanks for the info. I hit mine with the handle of my screw driver. It worked for both thermostats. Just think most people fork out $300 for a repair man.

It worked. I had to beat the hell out of it but, it worked. Of course I found this video 10 minutes after ordering a new one. Oh, well. Back up is good and it was cheap. Any knowledge of how long this "fix" works?

These things are everywhere in home appliances. Microwave ovens, dryers, coffee pots, (not washing machines), refrigerators, electric stoves, just to name a few. They are mechanical bi-metallic switches and are not thermostats which implies they can be adjustable to a range of temperatures. You can buy them in a variety of switching temperatures very cheaply on aliexpress, ebay, etc.
Thermostats don't have to be adjustable.
Great idea...my experience...I beat and beat and beat and beat and beat as recommended, to no avail. So, I put it in the freezer for a little bit, took it out and beat it a couple of times and it reset. Dryer working well again

Believe that's the "Thermal Limiter" or "Thermal Cut-Out Fuse"; you can hear it rattling inside if it's ok. The "High-Limit Thermostat" is in series after it & before the heater junction block.

Great investigative research! Question: after the re-heat in the pan (above 250C), and after the sensor cooled to room temp - did it go back to normally closed??

Ahhh I just ripped the spring steel coin off and put it back in without it. I’ve ordered the parts but for a quick test to make sure the element isn’t fried I needed the spade connectors. My dryer was completely blocked with fluff and was just getting very hot. A quick 90 second test told me all I needed to know. Stripped the dryer completely and it’s running as it should with no over heating. Never bypass like this permanently as it’s very dangerous. To be fair if this thermal fuse trips 9 times out of 10 your dryer is clogged up somewhere and needs a fluff removal service
This happens on many kettles - a thump to the base 'fixes' them.
I would call this a Thermal Cut-off because ii is a safety device to protect the device from thermal damage.
I had this issue as well, no continuity tested multiple times still no continuity. Resident asked me what was bad and went to show them how to test it and now gets continuity. Only thing I did was unplug it and hold it in my hands while I ordered a new part. I touched the metal sensor part a few time’s possibly changed while holding it.

I got the fuse to reset -- confirmed with my decades-old multi-meter -- but it seemed to trip more easily after the first time. I don't have any hard data to back that up, but, even after clearing and straightening the exhaust vent tubing -- kinking of which I'm sure was the cause of the first trip -- the fuse would trip when the dryer was used on "high" heat. Maybe the accompanying high-limit thermostat had been affected as well and was contributing to the continuing problem. (?) Anyway, resetting the fuse as shown in the video allowed at least limited use of the dryer until I could get replacement parts delivered. (~$14 online, versus ~$40 at the local repair shop...)
Many times you need to determine if the lower heat rated stats are in proper working order.
Thos why it is recommended the a thermostat kit be installed.
By kit, I mean that one and the lower rated ones that, in theory, should cut the heat off and/or shut the dtyet off when an overheating situation occurs.
It'd be nice to know what hitting it like that actually did in order to properly determine if it can be trusted.

Say what? I just fixed mine too holding it between my fingers and then slapping the back with some heavy wire strippers a few times and ........poof, I know have continuity. How long will this last is the question as I have a new one coming in a week. Thanks so much. 😁
Good work ,but wrong information! You should have check the continuity when, heating and monitoring temperature period. then only can be monitored if it's working properly.
I'm wondering how long this would hold up which really, I suppose would be anyone's guess. I did a similar trick with my mother's gas furnace. I narrowed it down to a possible blade fuse (nope), bad board (nope), and the safety switches weren't tripped. It would start up as normal and then shut down. Everything I tried was on the electric side of the gas. Last thing I thought I'd try was tapping the gas solenoid. It freed up. Now I knew what the problem was if it happened again, smart enough to not mess with the gas side and call a tech out to deal with it. It never did fail again for the next four or five years.
The freezing doesn't guarantee the result. In some types of thermostats ( for example 261/p8) there is a small hole covered by red paint - you can reset the thermostat by a thin pin. Much simpler.

Hi, I have a Thermostat without a fixing plate & I have found that placing the Thermostat into a snug fitting socket & banging the socket onto something has reset it

I just replaced mine, no continuity, and now the new one is bad after only one dry cycle. What would make it go nad so fast? There is plenty of air flow and everything else ohms out.

Hi. Wow. totally saved me heaps of money and trouble. I bought a new heating unit. It worked then stopped working. I think the heater exchange was still clogged up, so I guessed it just overheated. I was gonna change a few parts around from my old unit as that worked but had broken elements, but it was night time and the DIY stores were closed as I wanted to buy a new soldering iron 'cos I couldn't find mine.......then I stumbled across you video. Tapped the thermostats a couple of times....hey presto...working again....dryer works nicely....wife happy....sex tonight...win win. Thank you Kevin

Is it really reset then?! I mean you put the broken thing in that thermostat with that in the right position and it can not do his work again and then it is danger for the overheating for the dryer?! Is ist really from professional okay to do that?!
How can you lower the temperature in the dryer for it not to trip?
so it shuts of the thermostat when its hot....to hot. isn't it supposed to reset when it cools down. mine doesn't. now what?
