Well, I guess there _is_ a problem with the Academy, after all.

Viper Joe Other examples of how the Academy is messed up is that Lego movie didn't get nominated for best animated (on the technicality that there is a sequence with live actors) or how Big Hero 6, a fun but forgettable movie, won best animated picture over masterpieces like Song of the Sea, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

It could just be me but I noticed that Lou's eyes also seemed as if they were cameras, honing in on every person he meets, studying them and then successfully manipulating them. His gaze is unsettling and his personality is equally chilling. Jake is such a great actor.

Bálint Ujvári It was meant to be taken hypothetically , I really doubt Jake would even except a Joker role if it was offered.. Jakes now getting top billing so a Joker role would probably be beneath him.. Hands down Jake Gyllenhaal still has that perfect Joker Villain face..

    • @rayaqin
      @rayaqin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Jack Nicholson didnt take the joker role because he wasnt getting top dollars, but I agree that since Nolan or any other respectable director probably wont make any other movie in which Joker could be a character, Jake wouldnt take the part.

I was rooting for Lou until the last act of the film. I mean, you kinda knew he was a psychopath, but at least ya know, he wasn't hurting anyone (well except for the security guy at the very beginning of the film). Then he killed his competitor, let the robbers go, and basically killed his partner in the end. As for the movie itself, it made me feel so damn uneasy. I don't think I've ever been as unrestless while watching a movie before.

Am I the only one that wasn't rooting for Lou the whole time? The way I took the movie was that Rick was supposed to be like the audience, you know? He rides along like we do and gets more and more uncomfortable as the story progresses. Gyllenhaal's performance was no doubt the best, but Rick was the character I cared about the most.

The entire thing about loneliness and being isolated can cause a lot of problems which does lead to depression.
Maybe after that, it could lead to even more worse, it can also lead someone to go insane and cause a massacre. Reality can prove it this sort of thing to through insanity, like that youtuber who made these videos about how life is so unfair and girls never have him attention. He killed those people in his flat and then killed more and left the rest injured after he did his final video before his suicide.
Mental health is the worst thing and people can be so cruel to them and create demons, it can happen and that's why we call this planet a cold cruel world, nobody deserves to be alone or left out

people dont really get what this film is about, its about the pain of loneliness and the desperation of acceptance, that one scene where hes ironing his clothes watching a movie and he turns and starts laughing at nobody else in the room, his odd fascination with his plants, his wildly inappropriate relationship with nina, he is so removed from society he has no idea how to behave. there is zero fear when lou is behind a camera because thats his reality, thats how he feels accepted, how he feels people finally recognize him, when he stares down the gunman that shoots his partner, he doesn't even bat an eye even though he could die at any second. lou is a fascinating animal.

The review for this is exactly what I thought also. The idea of the main character being insane and understanding them is truly a difficult task to display on screen where thoughts are hard to show. I've always wanted to have a protagonist become the antagonist, which this film does smoothly, not a sudden change. This was probably one of the best movies I have seen in a while, from the screenplay to the cinematography. What a great film!!

Nitsujin Serinai i think the end of the movie is really polarizing. I personally get that what the movie wanted to tell us woudnt be fullfilled if Louis would die(or go to prison), but in my eyes he was nth, but a sociopath who just started to have more power and less boundries. Which are basically the most dangerous people of the word so I really wanted him in prison or dead..just away from society before he can do more damage which I m sure he would.

Kunoichi4ever4 You make it sound like ambition is a terrible thing to have? You cannot build a life for yourself without getting your hands dirty now can you? Sometimes you have to tear people down in order to build yourself up. That's the way major corporations do it, that's the way America does it, and it's worked pretty well so far.

    • @Kunoichi4ever4
      @Kunoichi4ever4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Ninja07Keaton my point is that if you are willing to sacrifice multiple people without any hint of guilt while being totally composed you are most probably a sociopath ...ambition is a great thing . Letting people die as part of your plan to better your position is not, that s why what he did is called a crime. It is a part of our world, but i dont think that it makes our world better ... ppl believe nowadays that the only way to be wealthy is to go against a law and morals, but in the end if we all believe this then the higher you get the bigger danger you are in. you wont last long there and everything you did was for nothing. and even if you lalst you will live a paranoid life not being able to enjoy the money you make fully ...

This movies soundtrack really hit me. The moment where the character witnesses an accident, and you see in his eyes he has the realization of what he wants to do, film bloody news, the soundtrack starts creeping in its instensity. All the while in these few short seconds the distant whine a plane roars in overhead as his eyes dart to it for a moment. From there on he becomes the nightcrawler

Again, I agree with your response to this film. It's wonderful and contains a brilliant central performance and a cracking script, something far too often overlooked in Hollywood. I also agree that better direction would have elevated the film even further, though it was by no means bad. My biggest flaw of this film would be the soundtrack, which, when compared to everything else being so good, stood out as being woefully under-par.

I loved the main character "Lou Bloom" played by Jake Gyllenhaal. One line in the movie that really won me over was: "What if I told you that my problem wasn't that I don't understand people, but I just don't like them."
I felt so connected to that, it really hit home with how my life is. It's like, I know how to be social, and I have good social skills, but I just don't like to be around people. I don't like people, period. There's nothing wrong with that. I just prefer to live a life of solitude. That's what I loved about the film, the main character lived a life of solitude and still managed to become successful

Saying he is a psychopath or sociopath is just to simple.. By that you are reducing a well written character into a one dimensional character.. He is more than that. He is a product of the society around him that rewards this kind of voyeuristic behavior.

I don't think he wanted the money, it seemed as if he wanted something more. I would say he wanted to be successful, following his own self-interest to try to rise to the top. If you can control how much you will get paid instead of letting the buyer control the price, you control the buyer. Thus in the end it seems as if he attempts to not only broaden Video Production News (is that right I forgot now lol) but to control the entirety of channel 6 news. To the point where channel 6 relies on his footage to even compete with other news stations. What a smart self taught dude am I right?

Chris, good review as always, but I feel like you're being a bit *too* picky. Your only "flaw" with the movie was that it would've been "slightly more intense" if someone else had directed, yet that is something that is impossible to know unless you've seen that director's version of the film. I thought for sure this would be your first A+ of the year, yet it's downgraded to an A simply for a kind of silly reason in my opinion. Not being a hater, just trying to criticize constructively.

I didn't grow to understand that he was a socio/psychopath, it was obvious from the first scene when he viciously beats a security guard and steals his watch. I did initially have some sympathy for his earnest need for a job and an admiration for his hard work but those positive feelings didn't last long. By the time he hired his assistant, I knew JG's character was ruthless and evil.
This is the 2nd YT review I've watched by an otherwise excellent and insightful commentator which maintains that the audience "understands" his motives and obsessions and even "empathizes" with this character. I did not feel anything sympathetic or positive at all for this character but I did find him, and the story, fascinating. This movie was the most chilling, enthralling and tension-filled movie I've seen in a long time.

Chris, not too bitch about it, but have you noticed that when you like a movie essentially you always say the same thing? You liked _John Wick_ a lot, and if I would've "bleeped" the name of the movie and the name of the actor you were talking about we would've been left with essentially the same information: "best performance I've seen", "best movie of the year", "this or that blew me away", that sort of thing. Don't take this the wrong way, assuming you would ever read this comment. It would be nice to hear you using a different language from time to time. Here you are again! This director needs to take a shit because he is full of pretentious bullshit. Not art. He should direct music videos. Not films. Plus your English is shit. Are you foreign or uneducated?

I completely agree with your review. It's a fantastic film. A big part of the genius of Gyllenhaal's performance is in his physical acting. He's pale and gaunt, like something you'd come across in a graveyard, has a constant saucer eyed dead stare, and a constant smirk on his face, a la Theon Greyjoy, as if he's in on some big joke that no one else is in on in terms of how he'll achieve success. His sales pitch rants are both disquieting and hilarious. If he doesn't get an Oscar for this performance, it will be an outrage. The only other tour de force of acting I've seen like this all year is Timothy Spall's in Mike Leigh's recent (and equally excellent) Mr Turner. With The Babadook and Interstellar also out within the last month, this has been an outstanding period for films.

    THIS COMMENT CONTAINS SPOILERS
    Hi there,
My name is Lou Bloom, otherwise known as the Nightcrawler, and I have a unique talent. I can effortlessly manipulate a few details and cause events to come to pass precisely as I wanted, even if those events are complex, convoluted, and would never happen in real life. I can also count on the people around me to behave in nonsensical ways so that the events all fall into place exactly as I willed them.
Let’s start with the home invasion tape. I will present an edited version of the recording, withholding the identity of the killers and the license plate number of their getaway car. I’m just kinda saving that info for later. But I will submit the carnage scenes to the News Director, whom I have blackmailed into being my sex slave for no apparent reason other than to titillate the audience. Her station will show “pixilated” scenes of carnage to dinnertime audiences. This audience surely will not storm the station protesting the sick exploitation of a family’s murder. How do I and my slave and her bosses know that? We just do.
I will not worry that the angry and suspicious police will seize my computer and find the deleted scenes. When they come to my house, I will know in advance that they have no search warrant and I will placate them with an edited copy that I will tell them I prepared for them in advance. And they will just accept that and go away. The forensics people will not be able to tell that this film has been edited.
Now I am free to use the information I withheld to drive the third act of this movie. I’m gonna do this: I’ll just follow the two killers until they get to a public place, call the police on them, and film them in a bloody shootout where I know as many people as possible will get killed. It’s obvious to me that this shootout will occur, but it will not be obvious to the cops. They’ll just walk in like sitting ducks. Why? Because they are stupid and I’m not.
I’ll carelessly allow my mistrusting assistant to figure out all the details so that he will have to be killed later on. It will be easy to kill him. I’ll just notice that one of the killers is pinned in his car. Then I’ll just tell my assistant to go film him and, of course, my assistant will get shot. The guy who killed my assistant crawls out of the car but doesn’t shoot me even though I’m doing the very thing my assistant was doing: filming him. How do I know he won’t shoot me? For the same reason I know that my assistant will die right after I tell him, in an expository rant, why I need to have him die.
The police will figure out exactly what happened and they will go to the station to seize the film. But my sex slave will tell them to go fuck themselves and they will quietly do as she says. The police detective, just like her counterpart in “Gone Girl,” grills me aggressively but backs off because there’s NOTHING SHE CAN DO.
    THE END

Drive is boring and is masquerading as something more intelligent than it is. Nightcrawler is a modern masterpiece.

I gotta agree with tarantino, it was a nice try, okay, but not a masterpiece as many consider it.

Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal is very versatile, from Darko to Jarhead to Zodiac to Brokeback.
Evidently classically trained in theater as well. One of the best of his generation..

Why did you have to spoil the fact that he starts doing crimes to film them? :/ :(

Very solid high quality movie. Gyllenhaal makes the amazing script work and the real freshness and originality of the plot makes it very rewatchable.
