How about spotlighting Matt Freeman of Rancid and Charger btw his punk and ska playing with Rancid to his Lemmy inspired playing with Charger Matt Freeman is one of the most versatile bass players in any genre of Rock Music.
I think he is underrated, not in the metal community, on mainstream, as he is not talked about as much as say, Cliff or Steve Harris, or even John Myung for the technical freaks. He is more of thinking man's bass player. The rock community does feel he should be even more respected
Hate to say it, but you’re right. As a guitarist who frequently doubles on bass, I usually get scrutinized a lot more for using a pick than I would playing finger style. Funny thing is, everything I record with a pick is “sick, dude!” So there’s that!
Chris Squire, Justin Chancellor, Paul McCartney, Carol Kaye. Even John Entwistle, Geezer Butler and John Paul Jones would switch to a pick for certain songs.
The punch, clarity and definition of the notes when using a pick just can't be duplicated playing fingerstyle, in my opinion. For me, my fingerstyle playing, the notes are just too muddy, the sound just too boomy. While I LOVE Cliff, Steve, Geddy, etc, pick players like Dave, Chris Squire, Duff McKagan, Krist Novolselic, and Eddie Jackson of Queensryche are where it's at for me.
@@possumweekend john myungs tone itself isnt really precise. Works in the mix, great player sure but also due to low tunings he often sounds quite muddy
What I’ve always though of Ellefson is that he’s not a unique player, it’s just that he plays the hardest shit ever because he follows the guitar 100% of the time.
Ellefson is definitely underrated and has some of the best bass tone. Megadeth have always been good when it comes to hearing bass on their albums. Even John Myung's great playing is ALWAYS low in the mix.
Love Dave for his playing and because he's a perfect way to shut the pie trap to anybody who starts to tell me the bass player who plays with a pick can't really play :)
David also uses his Brooklyn Era Spector NS-2 bass in the studio for songs that calls for a 4 string. He also owns and uses Modulus Quantum 5 basses along with his Jackson sig basses.
I just discovered your channel yesterday and I really love this series! Keep rocking dude you are awesome! My suggestions for upcoming videos: Flea, John Paul Jones, Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Dusty Hill, John Myung, Robert Trujillo, Jaco Pastorius and Billy Sheehan
My favorite of your “how to sound like” videos so far! I really enjoy how you break down a lot of the nuances of each player’s unique style. Ellefson is one of my heroes!
Love Ellefson's playing, he's such a killer player and Peace Sells was one of the first bass lines I learned how to play. Great video, man, I'd love to see one of these on guys like Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, John Entwistle or Flea sometime
Check the drum & Bass tracks of Holy wars, on the verse David locks with the Hihat by doing soft palm muting and lets it out once the snare comes in. Very tasteful and effective.
How to sound like Dave Ellefson 2021?Reply with your best phone sex joke.Example:Dave Ellefson "No honey I swear..I was giving her a Zoom lesson on pull-offs"
Can you please do "how to sound like Chris Squire"? I know he is not a metal or grunge or punk player but he is really really melodic and tough player.
I love your videos way too much. Please do a video on how to sound like Peter Steele from Type O Negative or Sammy Kiska from Greta Van Fleet or the bassist from Royal Blood
Word. Jared is in my top 5 favorites. I would also like a How to sound like Carlos Dengler breakdown, the man is the bass player for Interpol and he's truly one of a kind. Arguably, one of the best rock bassist in the past 20 years.
Insane content, just watched your videos about Matt Free man and now this. You earned a sub here. Next video about DD Verni of Overkill please!. To be perfectly honest, Overkill was never "my thing", they have some cool songs, but overall not my most favorite band. But DD Verni is crazy as a Bass Player.
We love Ellefson, his family paying was key in Megadeth’s sound. Considering the history of the band, good and bad, we felt Mustaine releasing Ellefson was a huge “dick move.”
Ellefson did a good job of staying out of the way. Sadly, it’s a tough gig to add punch but not muddy the sound or the song. Even harder when the songwriter doesn’t have a great feel for bass. Metallica got away with it because Cliff was better than James and Dave, and learnt what to do after his death... Tom Araya is even better because you don’t even know there is a bass in Slayer LOL 😆
We were utterly ashamed of how Mustaine treated Dave. and fired him. After all the history AND Mustaines shortcomings, we don’t under stand why he didn’t stand by Ellefson.🎧

Hey Paul I was just wondering, since your accent is quite strong, where are you from?
How about spotlighting Matt Freeman of Rancid and Charger btw his punk and ska playing with Rancid to his Lemmy inspired playing with Charger Matt Freeman is one of the most versatile bass players in any genre of Rock Music.
putting up with mustaine's riffs on bass is pretty damn impressive
Ellefson is a very very talented player
Nope, actually i have awesome bass lines.
putting up with mustaine is pretty damn impressive
So yeah, "the only constant member"... I'm so sad he got kicked out
I mean when Dave revived the band in 2004 with System has Failed, Ellefson wasn't there. He only came back around 2009-2010 after United Abominations
@@kylebrady969and the band lost a lot of it’s sound because of it
"Try learning the intro of Peace Sells and you know what I mean". Oh, you got me man

Dave Ellefson is one of my favorites, along with Frank Bello of Anthrax.
this is from before a time when people knew about his secret right hand technique.
lol
Megadeth is pretty much the grandaddy of technical thrash
I would also include DD Verni of Overkill.
The bass and drums at 0:54 just sound epic together!
Pick using bass players are almost always under rated. There is a certain snobbery aimed at them.

that snobbery was launched by that davie 504, sorry for my bad english

Use a flexible pick, play clean, precise and let the bass and amp settings do all the heavy lifting

You learned it but how long before you could actually play it?
Great video. Ellefson is one of my top 3 bass players EVER. I have his signature Jackson bass with signature strings and of course Hartke amp.
On Poison Was the Cure, he played partial chord and pedal tone at the same time in his intro👍
