It's a refreshing change to find a video that explores Dorico's weaknesses as well as its strengths. Could you say a little more about what you have in mind when you say that a DAW has "way more tools" for shaping the sound? As a Dorico newbie my impression is that it has the tools, though they are not so easy to use. But I don't know that much about DAWs either!

I'm so glad I found a fellow composer facing the same issues in Dorico as I am.
I thought I could take advantage of Dorico's VST functionality to get a score sounding as good as a mockup, killing two birds with one stone and saving me tons of work. Boy I was wrong, this is so much harder than I anticipated.
Hopefully this is something Steinberg will address in the future, but you'd have to let them know, somehow. Maybe sharing this on their forums or facebook community.

Yeah, I hoped for Dorico as well. Ideally, I want a DAW with notation functionality as in Dorico, but apperenly it doesn't exist just yet :(

Would it be at all possible if you could provide a link to download the expression map for Dorico?

I dont understand why they did not mention "Trombone & Tuba octave lower" in Document. Is " Bass Clarinet" the same??

I found that when I get this issue with CC1 being written by Dorico, I go to the MIDI CC tab in play mode for the instrument I'm using and check all the control changes in the Automation Lane that have an asterisk next to it. I highlight any CC that has it and erase it , then I can put my own control changes in. It's in the automation lane but Dorico will also put unwanted MIDI info in the Dynamic lane and the velocity lane. If you open the lanes wide enough you can see the little squiggly lines. Hope that helps

Thanks Rod! I have to check that again. I remember checking all the automation lines and couldn't find the culprit. But maybe I missed it. Thanks again!

As great as the Cinematic Studio Series sounds, I doubt it would be the most efficient for setting up in Dorico. We would have to use something like the libraries from Spitfire (which don't hide articulations inside other articulations), or having to contend with Cinesamples (which sound OK, but don't have as many articulations available. Only longs and shorts). Or compromise and program Amadeus, which doesn't sound nearly as good but it's very straightforward to program even in a DAW, and it's very lightweight.
...Or just use Iconica, which Steinberg themselves provide the articulation maps for, which is expensive, heavy on your disk, and doesn't have the dynamic range of the Cinematic Studio Series.
I think these are good options to explore regardless, for those of us who want to make good sounding scores without having to fiddle with a DAW.

The best option for short notes, is in the manual, in the following page: Key Switch CC (using CC58, and the CC indicated in the table)

Hi Andres, I’m using VSL and the matrix uses “two key switches” ( Pro instruments & NOT SYNCRON)……… can Dorico activate 2X key switches? Is there another way around this? Luv you work. Luv your music & videos.
    Best Peter

Hi Peter! Thank you so much for your comment! I have to be honest that I've been busy working on a lot of things and it's been a while since I revisited this topic in Dorico. I remember that I couldn't do 2 key switches at the time I made the video and I don't know if there's a workaround. If you find one, please let me know!

@@andresmontero88 Hi Andres. Thanks for the video - it's really helpful. If possible would you be able to provide another link to the expression map as the previous link has expired. Many thanks.

How did you configure the expression map to deal with the latency of the library? There are different values for the legato modes and the short note articulations.

    • @andresmontero88
      @andresmontero88  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I didn't do anything. I know for sure that Dorico compensates the latency if you use Note Performer, so it seems it does something similar here. With strings is a bit tricky though, I remember messing around with Cinematic Studio Strings in Dorico and even though Dorico seems to compensate for those legato latency, I remember sounding a bit late, which means you would need to do work, which to me, it totally defeats the purpose of efficiency. If those kind of things happen, I'd rather use only Note Performer or just program it directly on a sequencer.

I don't understand how Cinematic Studio has such a reputation for good sound, to me it sounds very artificial and processed... I have to congratulate the Cinematic Studio marketing team for their good work!!
Dorico disappoints me... it is a software that requires too much configuration. I love StaffPad!!
