- I took my Garrett ACE 400i out for a day to see if it could find me some silver. I show the setting I use and explain a couple of myths and tricks also to help new people learning to metal detecting with this metal detector, I did promise you a beach video but It all went wrong but I have included the small bit of filming on the beach with my Garrett AT Max. I find a very purple coin which turns out to be a Victorian sixpence so it just goes to show if you walk over a coin your going to find it what ever type of metal detector you use!=======================================================

Got an Ace 250 years ago because my son was interested (before he discovered the ladies🤣) and had some fun. Left him alone on a local permission and after a while checked to see how he was getting on. He proudly showed me a few decimal coins which he was thrilled about. I said it was strange that he hadn’t found any old coins to which he replied, “ oh I did but I threw them away cos you can’t spend em”.
Had chance of a 400i at a price I couldn’t turn down but just can’t seem to get on with it for some reason. Going to try leaving it at home and taking just the spade and a sieve.

Ah the old Ace 400i ground balance myth, it fooled a lot of people. Doesn't matter how you switch them on with fixed GB machines. Good of you to set the record straight. And good of you to show an example of filling a hole properly. Your always thinking about what's best for our hobby, and I for one respect that. ATB MMMD
Yeah it folled me, well other people fooled me telling me 100% that you could ground balance it, I even made a video ages ago of it and looked a right baboon haha

Loving your videos Dawn. I started detecting (in UK) in May this year with a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV (present 15 ish years ago) and quickly went through two more detectors and am now using Garrett 400i. Not been out many times with the Garrett due to soil being like concrete, waiting for fields to be ploughed on my first permission of 1,000 acres near to where I live. I've not found any old coins yet, found a few modern coins and plenty of trash at the beach but only a couple of horse shoes and trash on my permission, so far...….
Thanks for you wonderful instructional videos, they are as entertaining as they are informative, so cheers and keep them coming especially the occasional use of the Garrett 400i, I'm saving for a "Maxi" of my own. xx
Hi sorry for the late reply! The 300i is a coin monster I found loads of good things with it, hope the rains softened the ground up for you, im not so keen on the beach, I think its the thought of history that motivates me so much! Im glad you find my videos instructional, I am actaully a teacher in the daytime at a college :-)
Hello Dawn, thank you for replying to me, I'm proper chuffed. I found my first pre decimal coin on a footpath in my permission, it's the best find I've had so far, it was 1950 sixpence. I've been carrying it around ever since and I found it with the 400i, I've also got a new permission after showing it to a local farmer. I really need to know how to research the land that I have permission on now to increase my chances of finding coins etc. I'm working my way through your videos, which I enjoy immensely, have you done a video on researching land?
I imagine you are an excellent teacher, I am certainly learning a lot from you.

Hello Dawn, it's been awhile since I have watched but I still enjoy watching you. Great finds in the purple Vicky and buttons and the sheild. I'm glad that you are doing better after the heat stroke. I had that happen to me at the beginning of this month too. And I wanted to say that your cakes look delicious. I usually make mine with fruit and almonds, pecans or walnuts. Now I'm going to have to make some again and it's been awhile since I last made some. Yummy yummy yummy food for my tummy.
Ive had some great finds recently you should check out a few from past few weeks :-) yeah it was terrible i felt ill shaking for about 24 hours last week. The savoury cakes are sort of my own invention, they are lovely Im going to make a video of how to make them soon :-)

You have some good land there Dawn with all this silver coming up. Your right about detecting around old walls as they did provide shelter from wind and rain, don’t forget to run the detector over the walls, I have found coins hidden in old walls of fallen down houses before now. HH Tony

Am really looking forward to it as haven't been for ages. Just stuck on the beaches so here's hoping for a silver at least it's been a while. Last silver was a Lizzy 1st about 10 months ago. How did you get on at your rally on Sunday? Land detecting is a lot different to beach detecting I think, Hope you got lucky :-)
It is Dawn. I put a pic up on your fb page under the name Catherine Moran. The picture included a lead donkey lol. No silver unfortunately but four hammies came up a silver brooch and a william 3rd six pence amongst other things ( better luck next time ) Still it was a good day and the weather was fab! :)

all the wireless technology I have now makes the bong bongs a bit loud haha The healthy breakfast muffins are becoming quite a hit at my local slimming club :-)
Well there you again Dawn a bit of silver.I was impressed by the Garrett 400i. That's what I need.was out on Sunday with my Fisher 44 and all of a sudden it went hay wire and then it stuck on one program. So now I have no detector,till I get Fisher to fix it. Hi dawn great to see you out with your 400i you said gold is in the 50's . My gold stater i found this year rang in at 91 on my 400i and it was a constant 91 aswell and was with the standard coil just so you know . Have fun
wow thats a good bit of information, trouble is having never found any gold I have no idea what the signal would be, well done on finding a stater thats an epic find
Digger Dawn it was a very nice treat to find it . But of course depending on the thickness of the gold would change the reading massively . You will find your gold . I was lucky cause i could of skipped it as it had a slight iron grunt . It is just lovely to see you not give up on the 400i especially as it is a very capable machine . Happy hunting and i look forward to more of your great video's;)

Great video Dawn. Well done on getting a silver sixpence. I just wondered if the purple thistle had any bearing on the colour of the sixpence? The ground looked hard and dry even after 4 days off rain. Interesting mix off ingredients for your cakes I did notice you only had 1 hum. Thanks for sharing

Yes surprised how light it is my old whites machine is really heavy compared a really good machine though hoping to get to the beach this Arvo see how i go its been awhile

it all depends on where you are going to hunt, I should imagine being on Angelsey that you are going to be doing a lot of beach hunting, i would recommend the apex its a great land detector and an epic beach hunter :-) some machines really struggle on sand

I loved the holderness coast beaches , the erosion there is terrible but everything thats been dropped around there for hundreds of years ends up on the beach ;)

Too full to use a detector I just did eyes only in the end before I left but you always wonder what uve missed ;)

I've just found a 1916 sixpence and it is unusually purple like yours and it won't clean like the other silvers, how did you clean yours?

Hi Dawn instead of boiling why don't you try a ultrasonic cleaner far kinder to the artefacts.
I enjoy your enthusiasm and I am jealous you have places to detect there is absolutely no where in this part of Manchester.
I only boil very corroded or waxy black silvers, quick and easy done in 10 minutes :-) all of them go in my treasure box, the one from toady was a bit toasted on the front
Those shields might have come off a walking stick. I remember having one when I was younger.
yes they might, Kev found one last week too, so thats 3 that have been found in the same area
Do a Google image search for "walking sticks with shields", they look about the same size and the hole at the top and bottom of yours made me think of it,

dont know how you do it dawn your a silver magnet, dont live that far from you and find this area a bit sparce in finds. infact i have a permission probably 10 mins from your house GL&hh
its true thats not much older than 1750 up these parts, although they have been habited in medieval times, I think they must have just used balls of wool for money in those days instead of coins haha
or they are just to tight to drop anything here lol, theres a hill settlement not far from you i used to detect but only found pre decimals not been there for a few years so probably lost that now
yeah there is that and as for gold, I dont think anyone had that sort of riches in their pockets lol
