Preparation is key! I frequently use the VFR flyway along the lakeshore. The first couple times were intimidating but you pick it up quickly. And the views are 100% worth it!!

First time I flew it with my instructor out of KDPA it was mildly terrifying. I've done it a dozen times now probably and you quickly appreciate how good Chicago Approach is at what they do.

I've never seen that imagery you displayed and that totally de-mystified a lot of the departure and arrival procedures I fly as an ORD passenger and makes sense of a lot of the jet traffic I see as a pilot. Been listening to simple flight before during and after I got my PPL. Thank you for contributing to the common unity of aviation!

Thank you for saying so. Need to get back on track with SimpleFlight.

Great video Mark! I'm from northern Indiana and have always been hesitant to fly towards the Chicago area. This is helpful and will encourage me to make that adventure sooner than later.

@@pfflying6275 as a side note, do you do any public speaking (besides Simple Flight)? Maybe we could have you make a presentation of this at one of our monthly club meetings (KEKM)?

Enjoying your content! I fly out of the St Louis area and will be visiting Chicago again soon, this time via GA aircraft...which oddly enough, I've never done in spite of flying to other ends of the US. 😅 Would love any and all advice you have, including recommendations/reasons for which airports to use as our destination while staying downtown. We'll also want to do the lake tour, I've been eyeing the Fly Chicago chart already.

If you're coming up IFR, you will get PLANO. You'll get on freq with Chicago Center (123.75). From there, it will depend on what your destination is. Same for VFR.
With regards to which airport as a destination, KPWK and KMDW are the closest, but it will come down to individual preference as to which one of those is best. Certainly, pilots may also choose KDPA, 06C (VFR only - unless you go IFR to KDPA, then cancel and fly to 06C). I'm not sure of overnight storage there but imagine tie downs are available and reasonable. Suggest we talk so I can better understand your goals, constraints, and timing. Blue Skies.
