These things can change over a lifetime! From my teens to my forties, I could not tolerate cheese, chocolate, nuts, or any foods with fat-good or bad! 🤷‍♀️ They had not been a problem during childhood.
Then, just after I turned 58, I found I could eat small amounts of cheese and chocolate, as well as all the nuts I want! Go figure, but I know that change is a fact of life, too!💕

Great breakdown! Finally, someone that can critically analyze studies and looks beyond an abstract, and come with well-supported arguments! I’m a pescatarian, and I try to consume not as many products that contain lactose due to my lactose intolerance. Nevertheless, I did see some improvements concerning my skin. However, I also changed my lifestyle (working out regularly, drinking less alcohol, and eating balanced). In other words, I fully agree it’s more than just eliminating dairy products. Also, everyone's body is different and responds differently.

I've always been blessed with great skin no matter how I ate but I saw a huge difference in my hair and nails when I went mostly keto. I think any time you keep away from processed foods and sugar you're going to end up seeing a positive difference in everything about your body.

  • @ItsAlicein

Personally ever since I went on a plant-based diet, I've seen a lot of improvements in my skin, especially with my eczema. I also have way less acne breakouts now but I think that is due to my consuming less processed/simple sugar. However I still think going plant-based/vegan helped with my acne because it makes me consume more fruits and vegetables (especially fresh leafy greens) because I have "more room" for them now.

I’m a seventh day Adventist, and I am vegan. Part of our belief is to take care of our body the best way possible. And that is to minimize animal products. Not all are vegan, because it’s not mandatory of course, but many of us do chose a vegan, vegetarian lifestyle. And if not, they do refuse pork, and shellfish, and we don’t drink alcohol or do drugs. And the sabbath is a day of rest, we spend at church in the morning and then go on nature walks.

Specifically did it for my skin, & my acne was still horrible. Didn’t help a bit.
After that didn’t work for many years, I finally went on accutane. I wish I had just skipped straight to the medication because now I’m left with scarring. Going vegan doesn’t help if diet isn’t the cause, which can be difficult to tell.
In addition, I had spent thousands on professional skin treatments while vegan, had an arsenal of products, was at my most fit in my life..nothing mattered. Only accutane helped :/

The only time I could truly say I saw a massive difference in my skin (way less acne, oil, and my skin was a bit more radiant) is when I started a vegan diet. My upper face looks pretty young compared to my lower face. I have jowling, marionette lines and nasolabial folds. The skin around my chin and neck is pretty lax. Above the line, I have slight 11's and a few expression wrinkles starting to form on my forehead. My eyes are not really hooded and my crows feet only appear when I smile. What happened? One thing that is noteworthy specific to Natalie Portman is that she and her husband are very observant in the Jewish faith, and they keep kosher. Many who keep kosher adopt a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle just due to the frustration of planning your meals to avoid consuming meat and dairy too close together. On top of that, Natalie is an animal rights activist. I doubt that she went vegan just for her skin, but nonetheless I agree that drawing an anecdotal link between veganism and skin health like that is hugely problematic.

Genetics do play a role, but as Dr Dray explained, what you eat matters. You can be healthy and omnivorous or can be an unhealthy vegan. It depends on what you consume every day. If you eat ultra processed and deep fried foods every day, then that’d affect not just your skin but also your health. You can eat these as an omnivore and a vegan. The key is to eat well which you probably are doing already :)

I did a lot of research on how to plan my diet and could see so much effect when I stopped with the processed vegan food and instead only eat fresh food. So yeah, it depends. Although, eating plantbased is also an ethical choice for me so it’s just an added bonus that it keeps my acne in check.

I only found this out (and went to the naturopath) because I developed eczema around my eyelids and in my elbows... cutting out this put me in remission, and accidental intake rewarded me with a flare up... maybe Natalie had unknown allergies that caused skin issues.. or maybe she's more aware of what she is eating, and eating less crappy foods as a result..
Never would have thought food allergies would cause eczema, but so glad my naturopath thought to check! (the Derm I went to [i live in Canada] said I would just have to live with it, and use elidel every 2-3 days or so to keep it down.. i get every side effect listed to that stuff.)

I have beautiful skin, I'm 56, and not a vegan. I believe that we are all so different, we all react to different products - even my daughter's skin can't handle some of the products I use. My skin has been fairly resilient - but my mother had absolutely gorgeous skin (using just the Oil of Olay - I believe I remember a pink jar). She used one product and nothing else, nothing special for cleansing either other than good old water. For me, I use the products that work for me (not products that work for other people - I take recommendations with a grain of salt). I stay out of the sun as much as I can, I do wear sunscreen - and I do drink lots of water (simply because I love drinking water not because I think it does anything special to my skin). Lastly, I cringe every time I read about a celebrities' story of how they have "beautiful skin" - it it a bunch of bull***t - they have a very different lifestyle and I think it is incredibly irresponsible of them to speak out when they know so many people are influenced by their rubbish talk.

I am so glad that you commented, we are all different and I wish celebrities would stop saying that because they are "whatever - fill in the blank - if they are vegan, non-smoker or whatever - that , that is the reason they have great skin - it is simply not true. This is why I appreciate so much what Dr. Dray has to say about these topics. I have a friend who is my age, and looks really 15 years older, but she is a sun worshipper (still is) - so I believe that her skin is in that condition because she doesn't wear sunscreen, but maybe that is not the case.

THANK YOU for this great video, and for accurately describing veganism and detaching it from "clean healthy eating" lables. As said, plant based whole food diets are very good in many aspects, but is only one factor to a good health, exercise, adequate social life (very personal how much this is) and sleep, low stress levels (hard bc worksing often sucks) and genetics are also big factors. And as much as I love people going plant based or vegan, I don't want people to do it for the wrong reasons, thinking is a miracle diet, then fail and blame it on it bc they did a unbalanced extreme diet seeking health nirvana, it needs to be sustainable, and that also depends on each one how it will look like, I know I need some junk food every now an then.

Well, that makes sense. For people without the Lactase persistance trait (common among white Europeans but not among others) Lactose consumption can create irritation of the bowl, and that causes problems with nutrition and could cause inflamatory processes.
At the same time the fibre in plants can bind some stuff that cause irritating and inflammatory.
And both skin conditions can get worse, when there are inflammation processes in the body.

I love that Dr Dray mentioned that a "vegan diet" doesn't automatically mean whole fruits/veg, grain unprocessed anything. it can still mean processed high sugar and salt vegan foods. especially now with so many more options, vegans are much less restricted in choice but doesn't mean it stays healthy all the way through.
Important to remember. Going vegan can do a lot for the body but it isn't synonymous with good health, weight loss and clear skin. I feel like its constantly spoken about in that way when its simply not true.

The popularity of vegan diet can be difficult to understand why.
Many Asian TRADITIONAL( emphasize TRADITIONAL )diets are already healthy. The Indian cuisine for example has lots of lassi , cheese and vegetarian with many, many spices ie. turmeric, fenugreek, etc.
The Japanese eat fish and eggs everyday . Taiwanese is popular for their beef soup noodles and fish dishes.
If you been to Japan, Korea and Taiwan, you will notice the women all have good skin regardless of age.
My personal favorite though is Thai food for their green papaya or green mango salad, Thai basils, bean sprouts.
Bone or chicken broth is a staple in majority Asian cuisine, served for lunch and dinner.

It has to do with the way many American animals are raised. What they are fed mostly. I used to think I was lactose intolerant until I drank a glass of milk from a US cow that lived in a pasture and ate natural grass. No issues at all. I do not consume mass market eggs, butter, cheese or dairy yogurt here in the US. We used to live near a farm that raised food animals on pastures and in oak woodlands. The chickens would follow the herds to eat the bugs. No cramped cages, no feed pens. These days I shop at a grocery store, read a lot of labels, and look up the companies selling animal products.

I developed eczema a few years ago. It took a few visits to couple of dermatologist and tests to determine my condition. My eczema was triggered by heat, sweat, and sun exposure. It was extremely difficult during the summer months as i would quickly develop hives, huge blisters (bubbles,) filed with fluid around the warmest parts of my body. This was extremely itchy and painful. For years I could only wear long sleeves, long pants and long dresses most of the time during the summer in order to protect my self from the sun. The only way to alleviate my flare ups was via topical steroids prescribed by my dermatologist. I was a vegetarian for a few years, and finally two years ago, I decided to go plant base vegan. I researched the pros and cons of a vegan lifestyle, did extensive reading of medical books in how to make the transition. And after speaking to my doctor I decided to go for it. I’ve been on a plant base life style for almost two years now, my energy levels are crazy high, loss weight in the process, my skin is glowing, and this summer I finally got to run outdoors which I hadn’t done in years (sport I used to do before I developed eczema,) miraculously my eczema is gone, I had 0 flare ups. I recently went back to my doctor and OBGYN to check my vitamin count and my hormone levels, everything came back positive. I supplement my self with vitamins although my meals are comprised heavily of legumes, spinach, kale, micro greens, algae, all leafy greens in general, fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc…Is incredible how something I started for the sake of animals welfare; and for the planet, have also served my body and physical health as a way of healing.

My health state seemed generally improved(including skin), and I found out that that improvement was not from vegan diet, it was from the life style from being vegan. I should had chosen what i ate more carefully, and also reduced binge, and since I was in some kinda healthy community, I practiced Yoga immensely, and hiked a lot.. also for some reason all kinda tea was served like water from tap. so all of that made my skin improved. so well vegan or not vegan... eat mindfully and carefully and knowing your body... that would be key of any improvement of your body.

Before going vegan I had really bad "hormonal" acne on my chin. I also had occasionally small breakouts on my forehead and nose. While vegetarian, I still experienced this problem. Very soon after cutting out the additional dairy and egg the so called "hormonal" acne left me completely. Never drank skim milk and unsure if it may have been in something in the foods I ate regularly. I really don't think this is the case. I also have a lactose intolerance. Most of what I eat on a daily basis as a vegan is processed, sugary foods. I get the 1 teeny tiny small zit every once in a while. Nothing that's very noticeable. There have been times when I eat out and the cook puts butter or milk in my food. I know for a fact bc 1. My stomach starts with the oh so familiar pain of my past 2. There has been at least 1 confirmed instance where the waiter forgot to tell the cook and rushed out to tell me. These times the acne came back in small amounts THE NEXT MORNING. Despite washing my face and doing my normal routine. I know dairy had some sort of link to at least my acne. I have no doubt.

A plant-based and vegan diet can be different from person to person. Depends because there are lots of vegan foods that are processed as you said. And you need to make sure you're taking vitamins and having a variety of foods. Just because you go vegan does not mean you will get rid of your acne or other skin issues. I also make sure i have a good skincare routine so that might be helping as well.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to replicate this with diets that include animal products. Even though I don't consume any dairy, I'm still experiencing persistent, big, red pimples along my jawline, cheeks and forehead. I had a lot of other more pressing issues when I was plant based though, so I guess I'll just keep on experimenting to see what causes the worst breakouts.
