Hope to see more of these two battle it out. They're such perfect rivals. Greatest natural talent vs probably greatest competitive surfer. Also one is regular and the other is goofy footed.
One seems to be a calm demeanor, the other is pure firey competitor. One is hails from Hawaii and the other Brazil. Just perfect rivals.
Gotta give gabe some kudos though, guy is fighting on his backside on a tour a bit more geared towards regular footers, in my opinion. But damn JJF is quite unlike anyone else surfing right now.

I followed surfing my whole life but not so much the tour. It seems on every platform the brazillians are complaining. Is this normal? I think both surfers are dope but this constant complaining is annoying. I would of been happy if either or won. They both surfed great!
You never see a non Brazilian complaining about how Brazilians get always all the shit from judges and that's tells you a lot.

A lot of non Brazilians here saying how great both surfers are, while a lot of Brazilians just blinded by nationalism and an inability to see any information that does not comport with their deeply rooted biases. I have lived in Brazil and was once married to a Brazilian, and I love so much about the culture, but the endless flag waving and jingoism can get really tedious. Lighten up, it's not the end of the effing world.
Until the reporter spoke almost at the end of the round, all Medina's notes were wrong.

Ele deu só duas manobras "expressivas" que foram extremamente bem executadas que deu essa nota que foi bem alta pra apenas duas manobras, por mérito dele, bells é uma onda longa e mais tradicional, geralmente tu busca mais variedade e mais borda aquelas rasgadas bem capa de revista, achei bem justo o 6.67

Quero repassar para os amigos que essas foram as notas dos brasileiros para o medina e jon - O primeiro que não sei o nome so aparece a bandeira do brasil deu pro medina naquela onda de6.67 nota 6.0 e o segundo juiz brasileiro deu tbem deu 6.0 gora pro jon naquele 6,77 eles deram 6,5 e 6,8 . Ja na nota 8,5 eles deram ; 8,0 e 8,5 . Para o jon deram 8,5 e 9.0 . Temos cinco juizes a menor nota e a maior é descartada. Por este julgamento se observarmos as notas dos outros 03 juizes que não sao brasileiros o medina teria passado na bateria. Essa é a maior bronca minha foi brasileiro prejudicando o medina. As ondas surfadas pelo medina não tem nem comparação. O Jon só sabe dar aquele leiback se esta é a palavra certa não sei.
Na minha terra isso se chama garfada. Foi o que fizeram com Medina. Revoltante

John John, the greatest surfer of his generation and one of the greatest of all time, no questions that without the knee injuries he would have at least 3 titles by now. For people that surf and know surfing, his moves are incredibly impossible to to. Medina might look flashier, but JJF does carve backs that no one else can do on the circuit, and no one has ever done neither. just impossible carve backs of the lip with the full rail submerged....Its crazy impossible to do

shame wsl, the judges have to do a class with the commentators of the Brazilian language, they give lesson of wave analysis!
If you know anything about advanced high performance surfing, you can see that this judging was completely wrong, inaccurate, or rigged right from the start. Gabriel clearly surfed on a much higher level of speed, flow, difficulty, and talent with extreme power and precision, while John surfed weak, slow, flapping, crabbing short in all his turns which were all placed on the safe side of the lip and pocket and under the lip not on it. He had one stupid maneuver the whole heat, that weak lay back, gay back, pinched short at the end completely performed at slow speed on the safe side of the pocket not hitting lip, but avoiding it. Not only did gabriel attack the lip with extreme power and speed, on two similar situations, but he launched with 50 ft of air at extreme hieght and distance and stuck the landing in a full pressure projection bottom turn And stretched that around an unmakable section, like no other pro surfer. And John fell on his only big critical maneuver because he was not sure footed like Gabriel. John's two best waves were a low 3 and a mid 6. Gabriel's two best were clearly in the high 9's. Absolutely rigged blatant ripoff, inexcusable in modern pro surfing. Which paved the way for the judges to do it again in the semis and final. Who is surfing these heats, the pros, or the judges? Gabriel won that whole contest by far.
